3:10 start today, meaning its on Fox. Bleh.

Vikings also in Seattle today, but they are at 7 pm.

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010: Part IV - Thome's Quest for 600

Keys to game:
MN hitting into double plays (two in 4 innings)
MN players getting injured (two in 4 innings)

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010: Part IV - Thome's Quest for 600

Blackie has retired 19 in a row heading into the 9th.

Of course it helps that pretty much the entire Mariner lineup has an OBP of something like .320.

This is the type of comment that typically ends up being wrong, but it sure feels like the offense has tailed off lately. ARPG might be fine, but it seems like 1-3 run games have been more common, as well as declinding BA's.

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010: Part IV - Thome's Quest for 600

Fuentes comes in and strikes out Branyan for the save; Blackie pitched 8 2/3 innings of shutout ball. Wow.

Twins' production over the past 10 games (5-5):
33 runs (3.3 per game)
0 runs scored: 2
1 run scored: 1
3 runs scored: 3
4 runs scored: 1
6 runs scored: 2
7 runs scored: 1

They've given up 41 runs in that same timeframe, although that stat is distorted by the 11-0 loss to Chicago and the 9-3 loss to the Angels.

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010: Part IV - Thome's Quest for 600

So every time some announcer makes a comment about how Cuddyer has picked up the slack with Morneau out, what exactly are they looking at? Last year? This year ... don't worry, we can notice that isn't Justin playing 1st. I'd rather Michael picked up the slack like across the diamond, where we've forgotten that Punto ever existed.

I have to admit I'm kind of impressed by Billy Smith's stretch pickups the last couple of years. Flores and Fuentes might wind up sucking, but I've seen years where the answer would have been bringing back Craig Breslow.

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010: Part IV - Thome's Quest for 600

With Mijares and Mahay being injured, Smith had to go find some relief help. I'm amazed that they managed to get a couple reasonably decent players at basically zero cost. Fuentes is very good against left-handed hitters and should be useful in the late innings for that reason.

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010: Part IV - Thome's Quest for 600

It sure beats a week ago when our LH options in the pen were Perkins and Mahay.

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010: Part IV - Thome's Quest for 600

We have three former closers as relievers on our staff. That feels pretty **** good. I half wondered if Fuentes was brought in because Capps has looked shakely (ala Capps coming in for Rausch). But he will mostly do lefty on left and collect a few saves if need be.

AFAIK, he is also a FA after this year, and the LAA had lost confidence in him due to velocity. Personally, I think he was just slumping.

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010: Part IV - Thome's Quest for 600

I sure hope the Twins didn't bring in Fuentes simply to replace Capps. They knew when Capps was acquired that he had basically the same stats as Rauch. Talk about admitting they were wrong.

I think they brought him in because hes left handed and can replace Mijares (and/or Mahay) who is on the DL.

Also Gardy came out and said Capps will get the majority of the saves.

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010: Part IV - Thome's Quest for 600

It might be good for Gardy if he has more closer options and he doesn't get so single minded about, "it's the 9th and a save situation so I have to bring (closer) in." If the guy who finished the 8th is looking good, has more left, and a favorable matchup, there's no law that says he can't pitch at least part of the 9th. Unless the closer's agent has some embarrassing photos of Gardy, it is about getting outs and wins, not saves.
