Minnesota State Off Season

Reading many of these posts about how MSU fans feel about Hastings leaving...it reminds me of how I felt as a Tech fan when Mel Pearson left. I was not pleased. But given time, I realized that we have to appreciate all that he did for the program (in spite of his personality quirks and mistakes). Coaches have to make decisions based on their personal & family circumstances and career aspirations...and I'm sure they are tough decisions. Be thankful you had Hastings and that he built a great program. This turmoil will pass and the program will rebuild based on the foundation he built it upon. P.S. I think Jeff Blashill is a better coach than people realize...I think it might be nice to see him behind the MnSU bench! Go Huskies! And Go Mavs (except when you play Tech)!

Not only that, we would be renting him (probably over paying) until Motzco retires.

Minnesota isn’t going to just give Grant the reigns. They gave the current job to Motzko over Guentzel. He has to do a lot more before he will seriously be considered for the Minnesota job. And with timing, you never know if Grant will ever get the opportunity to coach Minnesota.

I think you guys need to at least see if Dan Muse, the head coach of the NTDP U18 team is interested. I think he’s going to be an NCAA head coach at some point and I think he’s going to be a great one.

My worthless 2 cents is that this is a scenario that has played out before but with the transfer portal it's only been made worse. Throw in our NHL signees and its a perfect storm.

I don't blame Hastings for going, it was only a matter of time. I will say though, if he did pursue Knott and convince him to leave well that sucks especially if he knew that Knott and out administration had a plan in place. If Wisconsin is so great of a "hockey" school he shouldn't need Knott. If Knott knew he didn't want to be a HC he shouldn't have led the administration on either. Then again maybe he thought he did until it was offered. Who knows.

That said this does suck. I'm not sure any program has been this gutted before and it might even get worse. But if we can land a good coach, give him time. Still have full arenas even during the tough days the program will bounce back .

Or we might just suck again.

I like a few coaches. Muse, Noreen and Oliver. Oliver looks younger then most of our players. WMU assistant looks good too. At this point I'll take any coach who wants to be here. Hastings and Knott dont.

He is in no way the heir apparent to the Minnesota job. I don’t even think he would be seriously considered if the job opened up right now.

I didn't think he would be either which is why I was not surprised the piece I found mentioned him as a possible candidate for Minnesota State. I don't know NMU well enough to know if he is underachieving there. Doesn't Minnesota State have better resources?

I still like and admire Hastings and don't begrudge him for his decision. It's losing half the roster that sucks! When Hastings came in, there wasn't a portal. He kept solid upperclassmen like Hayes, Elbrecht, and McInniss. He had Leitner, his leading scorer from the previous year, and he had a great incoming freshman class with Blueger, Gervais, etc. Now, between graduation, early pro signings, and the portal, we're wiped out. I don't care if Bowman 2.0 is the coach next year, it's going to be rough.
That said, I still think the portal is a good thing. If your college situation isn't working out, you shouldn't have to suffer through it. It's just a triple whammy when you lose your coach, your recruiter, and half your roster.

The next coach has to utilize the portal, otherwise the program will be left behind. This is the reality today and you have to adapt.

I understand the portal but I think that it's needs some type of regs. I don't know what but sucks for teams to recruit a guy, build him up to where he becomes good. Their facilities their training staff etc help the player excel and now they jump to a "top" program.
maybe they need to restrict the number of players a team can acquire over the portal. No idea. It's like NLI, I get it but it's use is making college sports unbalanced even more

I know there's a lot of worry from CCHA fans about building up a player and him going to a bigger program, but as a practical matter, how often do we see that? Larson this year from NMU, but any player we lost before was one who had little to no playing time. Fitz, Tassy, and Zmolek aren't leaving because they've outgrown our program. They're leaving because the guys who convinced them to come here are now gone. It's not the normal portal stuff.

If we had fired the coach, we'd at least know that we brought this on ourselves. It just sucks now because it's something we never wanted to happen in the first place, causing something else we never wanted to happen.

wondering if there are any mavericks fans out there that collected the trading cards the team did over the past handful of seasons? i am looking for the mike hastings cards from 2014-15...2018-19...and 2021-22 seasons...might any one be able to help me out? thanks!

Forgive me for asking but UW paid the last few years of his contract off and also paid him double the 350 he was making before he left?

Nope. I have unopened packs from 16-17 and 17-18, but that's it. Can't help. They're usually out of them when I get there on giveaway nights. This coming year that might not be a problem. I doubt we'll be seeing the 4500-5000 crowds.

Read a new name today in the "Who's the Next Coach?" Derby (I'm scouring Twitter way too much, considering it's the off-season). Thoughts on Jason Herter, longtime UMD assistant, and current Western Michigan Associate Head Coach?

OH GOD NO.... He was not wanted at Duluth anymore cannot recruit and look at recent Western Recruits for the next 3 years and you tell me.. move on from this bad idea

RE the portal... There should be more weight on pick a school you want to stay at--- it used to be that way, or you were faced with sitting out a yr.

I would like to see any player picked up via the portal count double on the schools scholarship allotment. ie bringing a kid in on a full via the portal eats 2 schollies, a guy on a half eats one full etc. Then it's not exactly the Wild West.

That's not fair to the kid. The portal is what it is. The next coach should use it to make the program better.
