Minnesota State Off Season

Great hire for the Mavs! Coach Strand is a great person, leader, developer on and off the ice and players enjoy playing for him. His style is very similar to the previous regime.

One little nugget that caught my attention was him saying I know players that aren’t here that wanna be here. Transfer portal players and a few commits that could flip to MSU.

Great day to be a Maverick!

Looks like we're gaining some stability from Sam Morton, Lucas Sowder and Tony Malinowski. Hopefully, the bleeding has stopped.

Really hoping for a good year from Sowder. Every time it looks like he's putting it all together, he gets hurt. He seems like a good kid, and he deserves a little luck coming his way next year.

That's a good start. Maybe some of our portal guys will reconsider, too. And if coach Strand can reel in a few of his recruits and portal wannabes, we won't have to start with an entirely clean slate.

I'm feeling a lot better this week than I was two weeks ago!

Fitzgerald and Tassy (Wisconsin) and Zmolek (UND) are gone. The vibes around Silye coming back aren't great. So depending on which recruits actually come in next year is probably going to feature a handful of transfers, but the fifth year guys coming back will definitely help.

Well guys as a fan of another team, MSU really earned my respect that last 2 years and I really enjoyed watching the team. It will take Strand a 2-3 year window now to rebuild so good luck

One of the few upsides to the coaching change has been a couple of portal commitments to MSU. Two guys from two top-tier programs at Denver and BU. Assuming that's a result of MSU's on-going rep as another high quality program. Or does Strand have some past relationship with these two guys? Don't know anything about these guys, but they come with good program pedigrees.

I believe Brian Carrabes (transfer from BU) played for Strand at Sioux City.

These two commits are pretty good players, neither got a solid opportunity at previous schools. I’m very curious if Strand can somehow keep Pionk and Littler. I’d also watch for two North Dakota forwards to enter the portal and come to Kato. Buckle up it’s going to be fun!

Carrabes showed good offensive skill his freshman year.
This year only played 11 games mostly as extra forward so little ice time
Not sure why he didn't play more- maybe defensive issues
Chance to be a productive player

Seems like a good pickup, like that he wore a letter in junior and college. Have to wonder if Damien Carfagna from New Hampshire is next. Was a midseason acquisition for Strand his last season in Sioux City. Would round out the defensive corps nicely.

Agreed. Also shows that Mankato is a place where transfers are willing to go.

MSU is a quality program and should attract some quality transfers. So far so good.

Meanwhile has there been any word about next season's schedule? If I remember correctly, North Dakota and UMass were part of this year's non-conf lineup. Or did that change with Hastings departure?

I'm certain that the non-conference schedule will remain. North Dakota released their schedule today. We play in Grand Forks Oct. 27-28.

Assuming the home-and-home deal with Minnesota was for two years, both teams have October 13/14 open. That would leave October 20/21 open for UMass to come to Kato. Not exactly easing into things if that's how it comes off.
