Minnesota State Off Season

From what I can see it looks like Osiecki was making as much as $290K back in 2019. Then took a pay cut, id assume this was due to covid.

He signed a three year deal for $660K in 2016 ($220K per). I think they raised it before the pay cut, but if Knott makes more than $320K per at Wisconsin, I think it would be much more than Minnesota and Michigan assistants make, which would be surprising.

I'm going to guess he will probably be in that $300k range his first year. The new AD at Wisconsin has been fairly aggressive and the New BIG media deal is on the way. There is money to be had. It would be interesting to k ow what other perks the staff may be getting like golf memberships and such.

But schools are also adding another paid coaching position next year too. Adam Nightingale for Michigan State only makes $385K/yr. Rholik for OSU makes just over $400K. Motzko makes $660K, but on a deal that will expire in a few years and will undoubtedly be raised.

I know UW values hockey more than Michigan State and Ohio State, but it stuns me that they would be paying an assistant coach almost as much as Michigan State’s head coach. Makes me wonder what other Big Ten assistants make and if anyone else is making that much. Seems risky.

While I think WI has been aggressive in getting Hastings, I dont think that money paid guarentees a successful program...with Exhibit A being Granato.

The biggest frustration a lot of Badger hockey fans have verbalized is that whatever system Granato was trying to implement just didnt tranlate to the college game. He produced a decent amount of NHL draft picks and talent that was below average in college, save Caufield and Holloway. I dont count Kunin and Frederic, as they were Eaves recruits.

I will always be curious if Wisconsin went after Rohlik. I think they wanted better access to the MN recuits, and that made them pass on Rohlik. One man's opinion.

Osieki had great Minnesota connections. I don’t think Hastings/Knott is going to change that much (as UW has always landed it’s small share of top MN recruits, but will always struggle out out recruit MN in the Twin Cities, UMD/UND on the range, etc…. No coaching change will change that. Kids in MN grow up fans of these MN teams like Wisconsin kids do with the Badgers (I live in Milwaukee, so I know the strong pull Bucky has in state too).

Where I do think Hastings/Knott helps you guys is recruiting the NTDP kids from state’s without a strong program (Minnesota/Michigan/BU/BC have been largely cleaning house in that area recently). You’ll be more in the running for guys like Cooley (Pennsylvania kid), etc…

Also - Not going to turn this into a Big Ten thread, so will stop with the posting. I just initially stopped by to try and genuinely cheer you guys up because I do have connections to your program and genuinely do care. I am hoping you find a great hire (sincerely mean that).

Jared DeMichiel would be the first name I’d want if I were a Minnesota state fan. He’s a recruiting machine and his loss at UMass has been felt on the ice big time as well

Definitely not my intent either. I hooe Minnesota State gets a good one too. Certainly has the pieces in place to continue with the success established! No reason to think otherwise as one of the top D1 programs.

Mike Babcock is available.. Seriously need a name who can recruit, I for one did not want Knott.. The name will help keep the program strong. Hastings built Mankato as a destination, now a name to keep the players coming. How about Mike York (LSSU), or Brian Wiseman (Edmonton Oilers). Sean Flannigan Cornell Assistant would be a attraction, his recruiting at Cornell is really good

I, personally, hate the idea of grant potulny. If someone leaves for nowhere school it's one thing, it's another to go.with a guy that everyone knows is gunning for another job. And, frankly, hes.been very underwhelming at nmu.

What has he done to make himself a hot candidate?

I wouldn't classify him as a hot candidate, he just crossed my mind as a possibility. I couldn't begin to tell you if there is another assistant out there who would be a natural fit though. I am assuming you guys have more resources than NMU and would pay more. Ya he hasn't won at an elite level but it looks like he's been pretty stable.

He and buisman said as much in the press release.

I stand corrected. Buisman stated in Kevin dudley's article that it wasnt about money. And with that, I'm logging.off.for a few days so I don't say something I can't take back.

I just got around to reading that article in the Free Press. At least there's been a lot of interest in the head coaching position, so I take that as a positive. Who knows, maybe this is an opportunity to get the program to an even higher level?
