Minnesota State Off Season

What's the word on whether the recruiting pipeline holds together or is it too soon to tell?

While it's a kick in the gut losing Hastings and Knott, them turning Mav recruits into Badgers would be an added kick in the balls.

I've maintained that all CCHA teams should be striving to meet or exceed the mark Hastings set, not looking for the Mavs to slide back to the pack. Here's hoping you folks find the right guy to maintain the standard the rest of us need to meet.

Read a new name today in the "Who's the Next Coach?" Derby (I'm scouring Twitter way too much, considering it's the off-season). Thoughts on Jason Herter, longtime UMD assistant, and current Western Michigan Associate Head Coach?

I have to admit, I know very little about coaches outside of the conference. I can't say there is anyone in the conference that I would really be interested in. I know a lot of people are talkign about Potulny, but I personally wouldn't be on board with that as he really hasn't proven much (and, frankly, if he does well, he's gone as soon as Motzko quits). Everyone else seems pretty entrenched or very new in their position. The other name I heard that was I thought was intriguing (and mind you, I will re-iterate I know nothing about him other than the little I've seen online) is Anthony Noreen from the Tri-City Storm. He was the coach of Fitzgerald and Graham Gamache as well as various other college hockey/NHL draft picks. He's won a few coach of the year awards and his players have won a bunch of awards too. Not sure if he's good because of the players his GM brings in or if he's a big part of that.

THere are a few of the typical candidates that we always hear about, but most of them are from out east and that's always a crap shoot.

Mike Babcock is available.. Seriously need a name who can recruit, I for one did not want Knott.. The name will help keep the program strong. Hastings built Mankato as a destination, now a name to keep the players coming. How about Mike York (LSSU), or Brian Wiseman (Edmonton Oilers). Sean Flannigan Cornell Assistant would be a attraction, his recruiting at Cornell is really good
Knott is well recognized as one of college hockey’s best recruiters.

My hope is that as much as I know there's is a rush on this so recruits can be updated as well as current players that the AD takes his time. Don't jump at that first good name. Rushing this process won't help

While I agree with not rushing, there's also some urgency to this matter. My wish is that Buisman and Inch don't settle for the next coach to simply continue what Hastings has done. I hope they hire someone who can push the program to another level.

The portal makes this more difficult than it would have been a few years ago. As I understand it, the portal is open until mid-May, so if something doesn't happen in the next couple weeks, players may start looking around.

still good players waiting to get in, see how it unfolds and where the best opportunity is. hence why Colangelo waited for WMU top line to sign pro. and the Frozen 4 teams will have good players and players looking for a 5th year

First player casualty is in. Bennet Zmolek in the portal. Duck and cover kids...its gonna be a bumpy ride.

Mass Exodus on going right now, and this is my problem with the Portal

The coaches who brought them in have left. I wish there was a bit of a cooling off period for them to weigh all the factors, but I also understand the decision. Ultimately, their lives are affected a lot more by this than mine is, so I respect their decision, and hope for the best for them and for Minnesota State.

Still looking forward to October. It will just be a lot different than I thought 2 weeks ago.

Me thinks the shine is going to quickly wear off Hastings and Knott after today.

Why? How many years did they give to your program? Players leaving because of a coaching change isn't new but especially with not having to sit out a year.

Why? Think about it from the perspective of the people here. For 11 years we were told we need this, we need that, we are all a family, etc etc. They got multiple raises that had to be funded by donations. They created friendships and told people how they were building for the future. They made friendships built on that. Theu built a succession plan for 14 months and then blew it.up in 2 days. They left and I think you can make an argument that the program is in worse shape after today than it was when they got here.

I dont begrudge them.for taking a better opportunity but if you cant see how a fan base would be a bit bitter, I'm not sure what to tell you. It's their right, but just like everything else, decisions have consequences. In this case, it may just be that they aren't as beloved as they once were.

It was 11 years. That's a very long time. But I'm also not familiar with this 14 month long succession plan you're referencing. I'm not sure how Hastings could do things any differently. He took one of the top jobs in the country (historically anyway). Unless he was the driving factor in bringing Knott with him. But if Knott simply decided he didn't want to be a HC, I am assuming you're saying he gave your administration different vibes on that front?

Take that for what it's worth.

Hiring Grant Potulny would set this program back 11 years. Please, dear God, do not hand this program over to a guy who has won nothing as a coach, has constant transfer portal problems, and would be a bad mix with the donors and boosters.

Not only that, we would be renting him (probably over paying) until Motzco retires.
