Minnesota hosts UNO: 10/15-10/16

Re: Minnesota hosts UNO: 10/15-10/16

I gave credit where credit is due. I'm a man, and I can take it. Wish some of you folks could do the same (not you Lincoln, you seem okay).

try some hydrocodone.

btw for you sensitive goopher fans I edited my previous post. The edit button showed up today so you have less to cry about. And no I won't apologize. You guys are tough you can handle it.

When you are the greatest college hockey program in the country we have seen plenty of adversity.

Re: Minnesota hosts UNO: 10/15-10/16

Oh, goody. Maybe we can split with UNO. Moral victories for the win.

What happened to the new arrogant USCHO upgraded ScoobyDoo? One and done?:D

Give the Gophers credit for a courageous two period comeback from a disasterous 1st where the whole team sucked, not just the D. Jay Barriball had some brilliant open ice moves and a missile for a goal. IMO he's one of the best captains we've had in a while. Cepis' hustle was outstanding as usual. Another costly error though at the end by a D Gopher player (didn't see who) to not play the wall that set up the GWG for UNO. As I said, the D will need time to get better... I'll give them one more series and if they keep crapping their pants, blame Hill...again.

Kangas has been unimpressive so far allowing 8 goals in two games. Defensive lapses can't be blamed for all of that. He's got to stand on his head in situations like this.

As expected the UNO horses came out of the gate strong and they're a team that finishes. They've been my pick since the offseason as a "dark horse" contender in the WCHA. They've assembled an elite group of coaches, players with awesome size, grit, speed and can bury the puck. I guess former USHL "scoring machines" are not as "meaningless" in the WCHA as some posters think.;) They will be in the hunt at the end.

I expect the Gophers to play the full 60 tomorrow night and seal the split. Live and learn.

Whoa whoa whoa. Kangas was great tonight. I blame him for 2 goals, MAYBE 3. That's pretty good. It's not OMGWTeFFBBQ! But still dam good.

Did he play "great" or "pretty good"?:D He had a couple nice saves but overall he got burned too often. A GAA of 4.00 is a bad start under any circumstances.

How many times was a guy undefended? How many odd man rushes? He saved us a few times tonight. For him to only give up 5 goals tonight is kudos to him. If gave up 3? I'd be dancing naked on my coffee table.

That is how I feel tonight. I am more impressed this team actually played with a little heart and came back to make it a game. It is still early but I believe this team will play better than the last few years.

Re: Minnesota hosts UNO: 10/15-10/16

We're probably looking at a pretty rough and tumble game tomorrow night. I personally look forward to seeing the Mavs play at full strength for more than 40 minutes tomorrow night.

If UNO had been more poised in the 2nd period, this game would not have been close. Playing the entire period shorthanded sapped all the energy from our guys. Hopefully they can recover for tomorrow night

As I said, he made some nice saves. Very few teams win in the WCHA when giving up 5. I'm still waiting for the 07-08 Kangas Khan to show up.

Re: Minnesota hosts UNO: 10/15-10/16

He was almost there tonight. There is no Kangas Khan if he's playing 1 on 5. ;)

I disagree Brent, he was nowhere near the form of 07-08 tonight. He didn't give up a 5 goal game all second half in 07-08 until the last playoff game against Boston College. He literally carried a team with an abysmal record that couldn't score into the playoffs and made it a decent season. We have not seen that kind of consistency from Alex Kangas since. Last year he gave up 7 by the second game, this year 8. That's not going to work at all in the WCHA under any circumstances. He has to play better. Like Lucia has said repeatedly, if you want to win in the WCHA, 3 is the absolute max. He got burned tonight on a few and you can't blame all those on the D.

Re: Minnesota hosts UNO: 10/15-10/16

I blame the defense more than Kangas.

Congrats to UNO for taking it to the Gophers and then fighting back after getting tied up.

The Gophers have shown so far that they know how to score - now they must learn to play team defense if they want to have a successful season, and given how young they are I have high hopes they will find a way to do that as the season progresses.

Should be interesting tomorrow night.

If Minnesota had shown up at all for the 1st period, who knows what happens. We played like horse**** up until then. Except for the bogus 5 minute/ejection on the one UNO penalty I saw where the guy hit Cepis against the boards (should have been two minutes), the calls looked legitimate. It looked like UNO relaxed and became undisciplined in the 2nd. Tomorrow night the Gophers will hopefully not take UNO so lightly the first period.

Re: Minnesota hosts UNO: 10/15-10/16

I was working tonight, so I didn't see a lick, or hear a lick of the game. I got caught up via our message board.

It was a historic game for our team tonight. I greatly respect the tradition of schools such as Minnesota. We don't have that yet.

What we do have is an awful lot of people who have seen this program from the very first time they announced that UNO would get D 1 Hockey.

A new conference, and what a better way to start than at Minnesota. I didn't expect that outburst early, but our team regardless of being up or down, seems to never be "out" of a game.

Kudos to Minnesota for not mailing it in and for tying it. I don't think both teams know what they have yet, but getting two points on the road is a huge step in the standings and for confidence of this team.

No idea what the game tomorrow night will bring, but hopefully UNO's intensity matches the gophers. Faulkner may be able to keep the team in games like this one tonight, we'll see if he can withstand a barrage at the start of a game tomorrow.

Enjoy the game tomorrow night everyone!

Re: Minnesota hosts UNO: 10/15-10/16

Never happen with Blais coaching. That would be lowering his standards. Blais has already stated that his team will work hard this weekend and try to use that to their advantage. He expects his team to outwork the Gophers. Matching the gophers intensitywould be unacceptable to him.

So the big question is will the Gophers be able to match UNO's intensity?

And he had a marginally better D. I'm not saying he's perfect. I'm not saying he's "ELIOTT!!!" or anything, but tonight, he was not to blame for being a sieve; which has been a common thought in the last year or two.

Good, coz that would just make you look, well, silly.

Marginally better D? Too early to compare D squads at this stage Brent, but the D was very similar in talent in 07-08 (Fairchild, Wehrs, Fischer, Peltier, Anderson, Shack and Bickel). Moreover, it's commonly understood that Kangas himself was the difference in the second half in 07-08, not the defensive performance (I think you know that).

Did I say he was a sieve?:D He was far from what I would classify as a sieve last night, but he gave up far too many rebounds and UNO capitalized (i.e. Matt White). To be fair, defensive lapses and turnovers played a huge role too.

I think we'll see a lot of penalties again tonight and special teams will play a significant role in the outcome. I expect 60 minutes of strong hockey from the Gophers, lots of SOG, tighter D, good goaltending and a W for the Maroon and Gold.

Re: Minnesota hosts UNO: 10/15-10/16

It's so exciting to know that the Gopher program might be able to split with UNO this weekend at home. It gives me goosebumps.
