Minnesota hosts UNO: 10/15-10/16

Re: Minnesota hosts UNO: 10/15-10/16

Marginally better D? Too early to compare D squads at this stage Brent, but the D was very similar in talent in 07-08 (Fairchild, Wehrs, Fischer, Peltier, Anderson, Shack and Bickel). Moreover, it's commonly understood that Kangas himself was the difference in the second half in 07-08, not the defensive performance (I think you know that).

Did I say he was a sieve?:D He was far from what I would classify as a sieve last night, but he gave up far too many rebounds and UNO capitalized (i.e. Matt White). To be fair, defensive lapses and turnovers played a huge role too.

I think we'll see a lot of penalties again tonight and special teams will play a significant role in the outcome. I expect 60 minutes of strong hockey from the Gophers, lots of SOG, tighter D, good goaltending and a W for the Maroon and Gold.

Ok, let's put it this way:

Would Patterson have done any better? No? Ok. Kangas has played pretty darn well so far this year. Numbers don't tell the whole story.

It's so exciting to know that the Gopher program might be able to split with UNO this weekend at home. It gives me goosebumps.
And now I am hearing from goofer fans that they are happier with the loss last night than they were with the wins over UMass last weekend. The standards have really lowered in rodentville.

I think Patterson is a good goalie. But we don't know whether he would have done better do we? So why answer your own question?

Kangas has played pretty darn well so far this year. Numbers don't tell the whole story.

What criteria would you rather use Brent? Your own observations? What makes those internally and externally valid?

Brent wants to to be the mother of Alex Kangas' children, so he might be slightly biased. When he talks about drinking the Kangas Kool-Aid, it's not what you think.

Mo-Tay here...first post of 2010. Impressed with UNO...but I expected them to have that Blaiser personality. They did not disappoint. Gophers were lucky to get all the calls to get them back in it but the best team won last night. UNO is going to be tough and is a great addition to the WHCA. I already don't like them....;).

After the fourth UNO goal, I was waiting for the "WE WANT BLAISER" or "WE WANT DEAN-O" chant. On the positive side, the Gophs fought back and they need to bring that fight when the puck drops. Kangas does need to pick it up. I love Bjugstad and Haula. They are studs. God bless Cepis for being the one guy to show what it means to play hard. I would love a team of guys like him. We need more fire, we need more purpose. This team just seems to be lacking that desire to go out and dominate like a Blaiser led team typically does. I'm just sayin'...

Where is Skeeter Skeeter Goldy Fuzzy Fists of Fury Eater? Haven't had time to go through the thread to see if his presence has fouled the air.

We're probably looking at a pretty rough and tumble game tomorrow night. I personally look forward to seeing the Mavs play at full strength for more than 40 minutes tomorrow night.

If UNO had been more poised in the 2nd period, this game would not have been close. Playing the entire period shorthanded sapped all the energy from our guys. Hopefully they can recover for tomorrow night

Oh please. It wasn't like the gophers didn't play most of the first period shorthanded.

A split sure won't be the end of the world this early in the season, yeah it would have been nice to come out last night with energy in the 1st period like we did in the 2nd and 3rd they get another chance at it tonight. If this D can cut down on the simple mistakes they should be fine as the season moves along scoring doesn't seem to be the problem.

Props to UNO for taking it to us in the 1st and then capitalizing on there chances late in the game.

Re: Minnesota hosts UNO: 10/15-10/16

Exactly. 14 seconds and 10 seconds into the respective powerplays. Minnesota didn't spend a whole lot of time on the PK, while UNO spent over 14 minutes on the PK.

What a stupid argument. The reason they didn't spend all the time on it is because they scored right away. The Gophers GLADLY would have given up that PP time for a couple more goals.

Start making some sense.

The argument was that Minnesota would be just as tired as UNO heading into tonight because they spent so much time (or just as much as UNO) on the penalty kill. I destroyed that argument. :)

No you didn't.

1. They're kids. They don't get tired and they recover faster than adults.
2. Minnesota exhausted themselves trying to come back. As exhausting as playing PK against an ineffective PP for most of the game.

Argument refuted. Try again.

The thing is, you are making a completely new argument. I'm not saying the Gophers are fresh. I'm saying that you can't blame being on the PK as long as UNO for a reason for them being tired tonight. Next time, please use reading comprehension skills when reading my posts.

Who knew your optimism would only last 5 seconds? Cripes Scooby, UNO isn't a bad squad that obviously started the game with more energy and is well coached. And unlike last year the team didn't fold when down by 4. No, there's no moral victory here it sucks that they lost, but this team has 10 freshmen and when the they learn to get over their allergic affliction to team defense could be quite good given the obvious improvements offensively.

btw blaming Kangas for that loss is the epitome of not seeing the forrest for the trees.

This is probably the first time the 10 Freshman actually are being asked to play a team defense. IMO, that is the biggest difference between college players and USHL kids.
