Minnesota hosts UNO: 10/15-10/16

Re: Minnesota hosts UNO: 10/15-10/16

Some helpful info for the UNO fans that are coming into town, from a longtime Mpls area resident:

Those ce-ment blocks that seem to reach the heavens and God hisself? Those are called "skyscrapers" and are not the devil's work. And if you find yourself in one of those skyscrapers, you don't have to take the stairs to get to the top. There's these moving boxes called "elevators" that are much easier and faster to use.

Also, chamber pots are no longer acceptable means of removing human waste from a residence.

Yes we're aware of those. We have the tallest one between Denver and Chicago.

Re: Minnesota hosts UNO: 10/15-10/16

Yeah, Scoobs, the difference is that in the CCHA, they only called Checking when we did it. Everyone else (particularly Michigan, ND, and OSU) could pretty much use anything short of firearms against us and be safe in the assumption that the refs would be "looking the other way".

Looking forward to a challenging season. Based on the last 3 games, the WCHA refs have been a big notch better. Still a few missed calls, but at least they seem to miss calls against both of the teams.

You won't find many of us pining for the CCHA.

Gawd, when will the whining stop. Last I checked, Michigan, BG, Ferris and Miami were some of the most penalized teams in the CCHA, NOT UNO. I agree, the CCHA officiating is bad, but UNO was not a mutually exclusive victim- but then again, there was always an excuse (the league hated us, Red Berenson runs the league, the price of corn is too low...)for why you guys didn't win enough.

Usually players with that stature have questionable skating ability.

i.e. Joe Finley http://www.hersheybears.com/team/index.php

Gopher sweep, after watching a video of the UNO fans and team just call this a heated bye week for the goofs. Fast forward to the 2:00 mark and keep a puke bucket nearby, "when i say go you say mavericks" ahahhahha

You're saying one of two things:
a) Minnesota will win because they will watch a video of a UNO game from early last season on YouTube; or
b) Minnesota will win because you don't enjoy how UNO fans cheer.

60 percent of the time, it works every time.

(I think it's a bit early, and a bit overdone, to comment on the subtle literary elegance of the Rouser, though I certainly look forward to this from some of my more hard-bitten colleagues.)

Perhaps we could all agree that cheers are either (a) stupid; (b) mean; or (c) funny, and where you are in relation to those cheering has much to do with which category you think the cheers go in. In reality they are all stupid; some of them are also mean and/or funny.

a) yes
b) not exactly what i said but sure why not.

Although I'm not a fan of the Rouser it was around before UNO stumbled onto the ice, claimed an overused moniker, incorporated cowbells into the fanbase, and used high school cheers in the student section. If UNO gets 1 point out of this upcoming weekend I will be more surprised than I was watching Bama get beat by 14 last Saturday or watching UND give up 4 goals in 10 mins to UAA.

I disagree that all cheers are stupid, "Sioux's a girl's name" is a funny cheer, "Husky women" also gives me a small giggle, and even though it isn't a cheer "Minnesota Land of 10,000 Excuses" is a funny poster.

I'm calling a split this weekend. Entering into WCHA play, both teams have something to prove. Both teams proved last weekend they can tickle the twine. UNO's average weight and height is tops in D1 hockey and the Gophers appear to be stepping up their physicality from last season with a little more grit this season. It's most likely going to be a very physical, penalty laden series. Which ever team wins on special teams will prevail.

So boring. Split this, split that.

Minnesota has the team with the most skill, is playing at home, AND has the better goaltender. Minnesota gets at least 3 points or has to take a look in the mirror and start deciding if they really want to be like last years team.

Better goaltender? GAA: UNO/1.5, Gophers/3.5, SV%: UNO/.947, Gophers/.897. And that's against UMass a .500 HE team. I don't think the Gophers iron out all the kinks in the D in one week either. Split.

Yes, better goaltender.

I can't believe your stat-ing me to death with two games worth of stats. And if you think UNO isn't starting out with issues to iron out just like the Gophers are I have some land to sell you.

Re: Minnesota hosts UNO: 10/15-10/16

Oh, actual hockey.

UNO looked about as good as circumstances would permit over the weekend. Blais speculated that the runaway win over Clarkson was partially the result of Clarkson's brutal travel schedule. Hard to figure what to make of UNO beating RIT beating SCSU (eieio!), other than that conditioning appeared to be a factor as UNO outgunned RIT in the late going. Blais is proud of his team's condition.

Scooby talks about UNO's outstanding issues: UNO's biggest? Quality of play on the road. There are risks on both sides here: UNO could come in overconfident against a team you should never, ever take lightly. On the other hand, UNO could be totally cowed (ha!) by starting its WCHA career in one of college hockey's cathedrals.

You could predict just about any outcome (other than UNO blowout victories) and I'd not bet against you. I'll enjoy seeing it on TV. Do we get to hear from Woog?

If you wanna hear Wooger watch the pre and post game coverage. An ex-Gopher player Rob Mclanahan is doing color for Lapanta the new play-by-play guy. Tom Chorske had the color duties last week. It's a new paradigm in TV land for the Gophers.

In the flesh. When I first logged into this funky USCHO board version today I wasn't sure it was me, but now I am.

No excuses this year. It's time to buck up. I could see Blais coming in here and stealing two points but that doesn't mean I'm going to predict a split against an inferior opponent. Points count all year long. Gophers should take advantage of the 6 game home stand and make some hay.

Re: Minnesota hosts UNO: 10/15-10/16

Really, skyscrapers?

Well, doing a little research, it does have one building that would qualify as a skycraper, the 634 ft. First National Bank Tower (probably the one MavJeff was referring to). If you were asking that incredulously, as in "Are we really comparing skyscrapers?", well...I didn't start it. :)
