Re: Minnesota High School Hockey '10-'11
That Eden Prairie-Wayzata game was great. Mario Lucia is a helluva hockey player, he has size, speed and a sweet shot. I was very impressed. The entire Wayzata top line was the best on the ice whenever they were on the ice, it seemed like non-stop pressure whenever Lucia-Camaranesi-Klein were out there. Eden Prairie beat them with more depth, from top to bottom, EP was better. But again, overall that was an incredible game. Right from the beginning there were hard hits and tons of scoring chances. Eden Prairie had all of the momentum until mid-3rd when Wayzata dominated for about 5 minutes and scored 2 very quick goals to tie it up. Wayzata had many chances to win that game after tieing it, and in overtime, Ford came up with some huge saves and gave Rau a chance to win it. The other player from Wayzata that really stood out was DJ Jones, their top D-man, he was very solid, smart with the puck, made smart defensive plays. From the EP side, it was obvious that Kyle Rau is very, very good. MNS and I said throughout the game that if Wayzata didn't focus on him, he was going to end it, and he did. No one else from EP stood out that much, because they were pretty solid as whole. Quite a few good players on both of these teams, there were times when there were 8-10 players on the ice that are D1 caliber players.
On the first game, it was also very good, just overshadowed by the second game, which was better. I thought Burnsville was in control of that game until the third. Edina didn't look very good for most of the first 2 periods, but when they turned it on in the third, there wasn't much that Burnsville could do. Just like the 2 6AA teams, it was obvious that Edina is stacked with talent, but similar to EP they were deep enough that there weren't too many times when individual players stood out. The one guy that did stand out, that I actually couldn't find on any recruiting lists, was #14, don't know the name, maybe goldy can help us out with name, he seemed like he was everywhere when he was on the ice. He was good with the puck and created offense when he was out there.
Very fun 2 games to watch.
State tourney should be excellent this year, as it looks like almost all of the teams that will be there already have some big wins against other tourney teams. Moorhead, Edina and Eden Prairie are already in. I believe the remaining semis are: Lakeville North-Lakeville South, Eagan-Apple Valley, Hill-Murray-White Bear Lake, Maple Grove-Blaine, Grand Rapids-Duluth East.
