Minnesota High School Hockey '10-'11

Re: Minnesota High School Hockey '10-'11

That Eden Prairie-Wayzata game was great. Mario Lucia is a helluva hockey player, he has size, speed and a sweet shot. I was very impressed. The entire Wayzata top line was the best on the ice whenever they were on the ice, it seemed like non-stop pressure whenever Lucia-Camaranesi-Klein were out there. Eden Prairie beat them with more depth, from top to bottom, EP was better. But again, overall that was an incredible game. Right from the beginning there were hard hits and tons of scoring chances. Eden Prairie had all of the momentum until mid-3rd when Wayzata dominated for about 5 minutes and scored 2 very quick goals to tie it up. Wayzata had many chances to win that game after tieing it, and in overtime, Ford came up with some huge saves and gave Rau a chance to win it. The other player from Wayzata that really stood out was DJ Jones, their top D-man, he was very solid, smart with the puck, made smart defensive plays. From the EP side, it was obvious that Kyle Rau is very, very good. MNS and I said throughout the game that if Wayzata didn't focus on him, he was going to end it, and he did. No one else from EP stood out that much, because they were pretty solid as whole. Quite a few good players on both of these teams, there were times when there were 8-10 players on the ice that are D1 caliber players.

On the first game, it was also very good, just overshadowed by the second game, which was better. I thought Burnsville was in control of that game until the third. Edina didn't look very good for most of the first 2 periods, but when they turned it on in the third, there wasn't much that Burnsville could do. Just like the 2 6AA teams, it was obvious that Edina is stacked with talent, but similar to EP they were deep enough that there weren't too many times when individual players stood out. The one guy that did stand out, that I actually couldn't find on any recruiting lists, was #14, don't know the name, maybe goldy can help us out with name, he seemed like he was everywhere when he was on the ice. He was good with the puck and created offense when he was out there.

Very fun 2 games to watch.

State tourney should be excellent this year, as it looks like almost all of the teams that will be there already have some big wins against other tourney teams. Moorhead, Edina and Eden Prairie are already in. I believe the remaining semis are: Lakeville North-Lakeville South, Eagan-Apple Valley, Hill-Murray-White Bear Lake, Maple Grove-Blaine, Grand Rapids-Duluth East.

BTW, I played for a terrible team in HS - I think we lost to WBL by at least 10 to close out my Sr. year and I survived just fine DAMMIT SO LEAVE ME THE HELL ALONE! ;) :D

Hmmmmmm....That explains a lot....

Re: Minnesota High School Hockey '10-'11

Moorhead and Bemidji ended up playing 169 minutes of hockey this season (two OT regular season games) and the teams are about as even as could be, with the final score 5-3 (w/ and eng) in favor of the Spuds in the 8AA final (1-1 tie in Mhd, 2-2 in Bji and 2-0 w/ eng in TRF last night).

Re: Minnesota High School Hockey '10-'11

I don't think teams should ever let up, no matter what the score is. If you don't want to risk being embarassed, don't play.

That is Ben Walker . I know it's quite a hockey family with a younger brother who is a top Peewee too. Ben is small, but he's a junior so maybe he'll bulk up for next year.

As a Hornet fan I was quite worried and frustrated with how they were playing through 2 periods. I've only seen them play a few times this year, but they did not look like the same team last night. They couldn't connect on passing, they lost races and battles. While they had more shots, I thought Burnsville had better chances. Once Edina tied it, they really took over and started looking like the team I saw on Saturday in the section semi-final. Ended up with like 31-17 shots edge.

Re: Minnesota High School Hockey '10-'11

DJ Jones is very good, but age-wise is essentially a 13th grader, which is what hurts him.

I was impressed with Walker last night too. I'll be interested to see what he does next year.

Re: Minnesota High School Hockey '10-'11

Goldy, Bigblue, Maize - thanks for all the insight! I'm now living in Milwaukee, so I don't get to see much MN HS hockey anymore. BUT I will be at the X next week for the AA Tournament! Can't wait!!!

Re: Minnesota High School Hockey '10-'11

Duluth East is going to state after beating Grand Rapids 2-1 in OT. I love high school hockey because I saw a 4 on 1 that ended with the puck carrier shooting it into the legs of one of the defenders :D

Also enjoyed mentioning how I loved OT hockey because the players throw their gear into the air...then East scored to win it. Very nice.

Did anybody say shutout?

Re: Minnesota High School Hockey '10-'11

Shooooooooooooot!!!

God. We also had the guy who wanted East to shoot the puck anytime they were in the offensive zone. I have never understood why that annoyed people so much until tonight.

Can't say I enjoyed the outcome. GR had the lead until 1.5 min left in the third. When they got the puck at center late in the 3rd, the GR player just fired it into East's zone and they all waited at neutral rather than attaching. (Just like they did against Lakeville East before giving up a last second tying goal earlier in the year). I yelled, "attack the puck, don't go into a shell." East promptly skated freely all the way to GR's zone where GR had backed up to and proceeded to score. If they hadn't have completely abandonded the forecheck, it my be their team going to the Tourney instead. It was a hard loss, made worse by the fact they had dedicated their season to Jackie Bischoff (wife of Grant, former Gopher, and Mother of Jake, starting Sophmore D) who passed away this fall of cancer.

Re: Minnesota High School Hockey '10-'11

I'm heading down to the State Fairgrounds after work today to catch the Blaine-Maple Grove and Hill Murray-White Bear Lake section finals. Should be fun. I hope Hill-Murray kills WBL, so we can leave early, since the game starts at 9:00 and thats cutting into serious drinking time.

Sorry too. I would have liked seeing the orange back in the tourney. Too bad about Mrs. Bischoff.

They should, although we all know in section finals stranger things have happened. They should just serve booze at the games and be done with it. :)
