Minnesota High School Hockey '10-'11

Re: Minnesota High School Hockey '10-'11

Over in 3A, I was excited by Redwood Valley's break-out year last year, and hoped for a continuation this year. Nope! Finished this year 10-13-2, and lost in the quarterfinals to Litchfield last week 8-0. Oh well.

Re: Minnesota High School Hockey '10-'11

Just go down and find a seat. It will not sell out, it's just that people try to save seats - it's GA, if someone is not there in the seat, take it. Usually people will be reasonable about it. We were trying to save a block of seats two years ago but when it started to fill up we saved fewer and fewer, letting people take the open ones.

Trying to decide if I will take off for a while after 2 to buzz over to Mariucci and get a ticket. Don't want to risk the lines tonight. Will depend on how busy my afternoon gets...
It did sell out the last time it was at Mariucci, I think attendance was over 11,000, they oversold expecting people to leave after game 1, and when people didn't it was a huge mess. I remember people sitting on the stairs, and the concourse being packed with people standing, and not seeing that many open seats that were being saved. If I remember right, that year was much worse than the prior years.

I remembered seeing scattered open seats even then. But we left after first period of the second game and we were in our seats early (due to buying tickets in advance and not dealing with the lines at the windows).

I can't really make people give up a seat they are saving though, because I wouldn't have a ticket at all. :)

It was fine for most of the first game, and about the second half of the second game, but that time when people started showing up for game 2, while game 1 was still going on, and people from game 1 stayed a little later to catch a bit of the second game it was a mess. And there was nothing they could even do about it, since everyone in there had a ticket for both games. There was a bunch more hype for the games 2 years ago, for some reason. I haven't heard nearly as much about it this year. Hopefully it won't be bad this year. The best way to do it is to sit in the unused student sections, for whichever teams are playing in the other game.

Re: Minnesota High School Hockey '10-'11

Surprising result of last night was in 2A, as Orono scored 2 goals in the final minute of the game to beat the section's #1 seed, Blake, 3-2.

Good riddance.

Edit: I was thinking of Breck, but I'll go ahead and stand by my statement regardless. I was really rooting for Delano, and they almost pulled it off.

Too bad #3 seed Delano couldn't manage to hang on, losing to #2 Breck 5-4 in OT after having the lead for over half of the game.

Ok...I assume I should head over now to get a ticket? :p
I think they go on sale at Mariucci at 4, but I don't know for sure. The hype isn't there like it was the last time these games were at Mariucci, maybe the line won't be so long this year.

Went on sale at 2. Was pretty good traffic there at 2:15 when I got there.

Re: Minnesota High School Hockey '10-'11

Anyone see the Hill Murray 17-0 game? I had someone criticizing them for not taking it easy. I didn't see it so don't know if they did or not. I figure HS kids can take it though. I can understand in hockey, of all sports, you want your team working towards having momentum in the playoffs, not slowing down the game and over-passing just to avoid hurt feelings of 16-18 year old boys on the other team. If you turn off the spigot, you don't always just turn it back on when you need it. Anyone see the game?

It's high school, I think the whole, they should stop to prevent hurt feelings/egos is bull. Parents need to stop being so sensitive.

Re: Minnesota High School Hockey '10-'11

This wasn't a parent or even associated with either school. I don't think the person liked HM at all though, so was probably looking for more justification for his hatred. And I agree. HS kids can take it. That is life.

I also sort of laugh at the stories about blowouts between young girl sports teams and the criticism of coaches who don't throttle back their team. About 60 seconds after the game is over, for 90% of the participants they are more concerned about what snack their parents brought for them than the result of the game.

I think teaching kids to lose sometimes, is one of sports great lessons. That is often the motivation to work hard to improve.

Hibbing defeats Virginia 5-0 in the 7A championship game. Tomorrow night is the 7AA championship game between Duluth East and Grand Rapids.

I know the goalie (and his family) who was on the receiving end very well.....I haven't had a chance to talk them since the game but it's a question I had planned to ask when I see them. If I remember the box score correctly HM scored 9-7-1 so they called the dogs off some.
BTW, I played for a terrible team in HS - I think we lost to WBL by at least 10 to close out my Sr. year and I survived just fine DAMMIT SO LEAVE ME THE HELL ALONE! ;) :D

Re: Minnesota High School Hockey '10-'11

Just got back home from Mariucci. 2 excellent games tonight, especially 6AA. Wow. More tomorrow, sleep now.
