Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

I am betting Alt plays football. I am also fine with that. We definitely don't need any players that aren't sure if they want to play hockey. Seems as though we have enough of those.

Agree 100%. It wouldn't bug me at all to tell him don't bother coming here if he is still going back and forth between playing hockey and football. Like you said we don't need anymore of those kind of players.

Nobody knows if Alt is, "that kind of player" or not. For Parise sake, he's an 18 year-old kid good enough to be considered a Div I prospect for two different sports - let's not prematurely malign him just because of players not named Mark Alt that came before him.

Or, we could just burn him at the stake now and beat the rush. ;) :p

I think you are reading into my comments a little too much. I wasn't maligning him at all. I merely said if he wants to play football I am fine with it.

Then, I maligned players on the current roster. :)

It's not a big deal, but this is the quote I referred to:

I'm saying we don't know if Alt is "that kind of player" or not. :)

True we don't but it's fun to speculate and malign. :D

Larson will be a lot like Wheeler, has some growing to do but will be an impact player from the first shift.

A 21-year-old freshman who played multiple seasons in the NAHL "will be a lot like" a kid who was a first round NHL draft choice? Hope you're right...

Wheeler passed the puck and went into the corners. Larson does not. He did not in high school and when I saw him in NAHL Showcase in September 2009, he did not there either.

Wheeler was here on a scholarship and Larson is a recruited walkon - big difference.

Good reminder. I've been kinda following Mark Alt's story a little bit. Apparently he's been offered a "gray shirt" with Iowa with some interest from Kansas as well.

Both he and his Dad, who was an All American at Iowa and played 13 years for the KC Chiefs, obviously have a lot of respect for Gopher hockey. But Mark seems to be leaving the door open to recant on his verbal if a top football program comes with an equally good offer:

John added: “I have nothing but good things to say about Iowa football, obviously, but it’s not my decision. One of the things Mark said early on is everything has to be apples-to-apples. It has to be a top football program in the country for him to even consider passing on hockey at Minnesota. A lot of schools were eliminated early on because they weren’t up to the standard that Minnesota hockey is at."

He's a Mr. Hockey finalist and is having a very good hockey season so far on D for Cretin Durham Hall. He's big and strong and moves the puck well. The latest is he's been asked to play with the Chicago Steel of the USHL on weekends after the HS season is over. It sounds like Mark may wait to see where he ends up in the NHL draft in June before making a final decision.

IMO Mark Alt is one of the top three HS athletes in the State of Minnesota. If he does sign with the Gophers I think his mindset will be all hockey from that point on. Whether he jumps immediately to the Gophers or the USHL remains to be seen.

I thought I heard Walters may be headed for Juniors for another year as well. And no one really knows if Youso is really coming or not.

I heard that too. Jake Youso may not be coming in. If he does, ice time will be scarce.

So the family is looking for a 7th place football program or better. Makes sense. :)

Don't be bitter dg just because all DU football fans have left to celebrate about is a distorted 8 track tape of DU's 1951 appearance in the Pineapple Bowl.;)

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

As a Gopher fan I would LOVE to see Alt play Football AND Hockey at the U there is no reason he can't play Aug-November for Brewster and then early December (God forbid the that Gophers actually make it to a good Bowl) slide over to hockey and finish the year out (practice whenever possible with the hockey team). They usually have 2-3 weeks off from the end of the Big Ten Football Season till they play the toilet bowl or whatever other no name bowl. That gives him plenty of time to practice with the squad and be ready to hit the ice running.

Next year the Gopher football team has a bye the week of Nov 21st. So that would give him his first shot at game action (not sure what the Hockey Schedule is yet). Plus he COULD play on weeknds that they both have home games or road games(if any).

Have Brewster give him the full ride for football and let the hockey team save a scholarship.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

Star Tribune said:
Note
Gophers assistant coach John Hill was giving Cretin-Derham Hall defenseman Mark Alt and his parents a tour of Mariucci's facilities after the game. Alt, who has football options, too, has verbally committed to the Gophers in hockey but has not signed a letter of intent.

This is a good sign.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

Exactly how binding is a LOI? The name implies that it means nothing, but I have a feeling it has some implications.

The National Letter of Intent or NLI is used to provide a certain amount of certainty to the NCAA college recruiting process. A player is guaranteed a scholarship for one year by the recruiting college and agrees to attend that college for one year. All other colleges that are part of the NLI program have to stop trying to recruit the player. Once the letter of intent is signed it is legally binding agreement between the college or university and the player. It is legally binding for only one college academic year. The NLI in itself does not guarantee an athlete a place on the team or playing time. The National Letter of Intent is sent to the player along with the official scholarship offer.
