Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

The 1998-99 team had a GPG avg. of 3.23, this season 2.67. The only positive is this season's team may surpass the W/L% by a couple games.
I wouldn't put much value in comparing offensive numbers - I suspect that overall scoring has declined since then (and if we're going to compare offense, we should also look at the other side of it as I'm going to go out on a tiny limb here and say that this season's defensive numbers are superior to '99).

I agree and I almost put that in my post because I thought you would bring that up.;) Not to add salt in the wound, but the 1998-99 squad at least had 3 shutouts. This season we have yet to see one. Twelve out of 30 games this season have resulted in 2 or less goals. Although league scoring is down and goaltending has improved, those numbers are pathetic and put us way behind 1998-99.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

Funny thing is that this team's offense is probably on par with where we were two seasons ago. The difference is that the '07-'08 team became a defense-first squad after Okposo's departure and appeared to pride themselves on gutting out a lot of 2-1 type games on their way to an improbable NCAA berth / F5 runner-up finish. Sadly, I don't see either of those things happening this time.

With the current group of players "PRIDE ON ICE" apparently doesn't exist.

Agreed, if that was going to happen they would have beaten NMU and not gotten swept by both Denver and SCSU.

There's no turnaround coming and I think everyone knows it.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

Here were the D that played on the 07-08 team that started playing the lock down style late in the year.

RJ Andersen
Stu Bickel
Cade Fairchild
Derek Peltier
David Fischer
Brian Schack
Kevin Wehrs

Here is today's lineup.

Cade Fairchild
David Fischer
Kevin Wehrs
Brian Schack
Aaron Ness
Nick Leddy
Seth Helgeson

We have 4 of the same D playing on this year's team but I highly doubt they could pull it off.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

The end of the year awards are going to be pretty hollow for this group.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

As far as Schroeder is concerned, it almost appears as though he's checked out for the season and doesn't even wanna be here. His play has been down all season. Last year at this time he had 12 goals, he's got 7 so far. It would be great if he could stay another season, but I think it's hasta la vista baby at season's end in just a few weeks.

Fairchild has been unexpectedly quiet this year. Last year at this time he had 8 goals. He's got 2 this year so far.

I bet Schroeder isn't the only checked out in fact I bet we see some sort of mini mass exodus out of Dinkytown/Stadium Village.;)

Me too. I'd be surprised if he is still attending classes.

"You know what, for the most part we have played pretty hard and pretty well most nights," Lucia said on Monday during his weekly radio show. "We haven't gotten the results we'd like. Saturday is probably the first game we have played subpar in a while, where we just didn't play well."

Really?:D

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

Time to talk about next season! :D

The Gophers will have 7 seven spots to fill for next season. Gophers had 26 on the roster this season, but Lucia said he wants 28 next year. They'll probably be another 2-3 players added to this list before next season. Overall a very good incoming freshman class! Feel better?;)

F Erik Haula, Omaha, USHL
F Seth Ambroz, Omaha, USHL
F Nate Condon, Fargo, USHL
D Nate Schmidt, Fargo, USHL
F Nick Bjugstad, Blaine High School
F Jared Larson, Fairbanks Ice Dogs, NAHL

Probable
G Joel Vienneau, Kingston, OJAHL

This is a stellar recruiting class. Ryan Walters had a hat trick in the USHL All Star game and was MVP. Holl, Alt, Isackson, Gardiner, Bjugstad are all Mr. Hockey finalists. Here's a little bit on Jared Larson.

It's doubtful Lucia will carry all 11 of the above though. Alt is a maybe, he's still taking football offers and didn't sign early. Justin Holl may be headed for the USHL for a year. There's a good chance Max Gardiner may just make the jump to the Gophers next year, but not 100% sure. Christian Isackson may be headed to the USHL as well. Rumor has it there may be a walk-on or two with a shot at a roster spot.

I thought I heard Walters may be headed for Juniors for another year as well. And no one really knows if Youso is really coming or not.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

I am betting Alt plays football. I am also fine with that. We definitely don't need any players that aren't sure if they want to play hockey. Seems as though we have enough of those.
