Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

That was the game where the ENTIRE Russian team quit before the game even started, right?

I'm just sayin'. ;)

Still. You would think that two of the best defensemen in the world would know better than to take a wrister if they are so horrible.

(Of course, unlike the Gophs this year, the Canadians had a player standing in front of the goalie any time the puck was in the offensive zone.)

Could it be that in certain situations the wrister is the best choice and in others you're better off with a slapshot, and the good players know which is best for the situation? :p ;)

This.

I mean, gosh, if only they had someone like Grant Potulny there to instill the virtures of camping out and collecting the garbage. Oh, wait...

A very wise poster once wrote the following, very cogent and articulate point along those very same lines.

And there are situations where I don't mind a D taking a wrist shot. Yes, a wrister from the point isn't going to score when the goalie sees it, and isn't going to result in a good rebound. But other than a one-timer situation, a wrister can be released quicker and more accurately, so is less likely to be blocked nearby and turned into a breakaway. If the goalie is completely screened, a player is more likely to hit an opening they see than miss the net completely. And in the case of a shot meant as a pass for a deflection, the wrister is more accurate. Not to mention, how often do you see a stick break on a wrist shot versus a slapper?

The first thing the Edina peewee B1 coaches look for at tryouts is guys who go to the net. Before they look at speed and skill they look for guts and desire to get to that scoring area. Maybe the Gopher coaches should think like the peewee coaches (those two peewee B1 teams are ranked 1 and 2 in State).

....and they destroyed Shakopee 6 to 0. The Shakopee head coach's father works for me. He said if both Edina team combined they could easly be a peewee A team.

Hold onto your hats hobos and clowns...the best series of the year may be in the making. Depending on the outcomes of the UND/CC and Gopher/UMD games tonight, a few possible season ending scenarios may put us in a position for a trip to the Bunker in GF for the first round of MMA mixed with a little ice hockey. That could be fun.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

That's a possibility I spotted last weekend - I figured UND had the advantage over CC if they split this weekend, and tonight's result pretty much guarantees them the last home ice spot. MN can overtake CC just by tying them in the standings, but they will need help for that to happen.

I also believe that if MN wins out (regular season), sweeps the first round, and goes 2-1 at the F5, there's a possibility of them getting into the top 14 of the pairwise and sneaking in as an at-large. They can pass several teams just by continuing to win, but they will probably need at least some help to pass all of them and get an at-large spot as the #14/15 overall.

It's just too bad they waited this long. And who knows if it will last.

UND also has the chance to pass UMD in the standings as well, depending on how tonight's games go.
Those could make for some interesting 1st round games with the combination of UMD, UND, CC, and UMN likely playing each other.

Is it necessarily going to take that much for them to have a chance? Just by estimation I was thinking if they can go 2-0-1 over these last 3, win the first round in 3 games and then go 2-1 in the Final 5 they might be able to squeak in. But I am really not a numbers guy.

Also, I'm wondering what happens in terms of the PWR if a tournament game goes to multiple overtimes before a winner is declared. Is that consider a tie for PWR purposes, or does it go in the W-L column?

Unless it's the 3rd place game, I'd have to imagine it's a W, since there are no ties in playoff tourneys. Holiday tourneys it's a tie.

That Fulton clown is dirty; hopefully he gets his tonight... perhaps Helgeson could work him over to the delight of Mozzaco.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

It's too late to step away from the ledge, the team is already over the edge and off the ledge. Falling deeper until the next savior coach arrives.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

The Gophers play better with the lead which is why we're in 7th.;)

Yes. I'm using .500 TUC record as the reasonable cut-off. It's all a moot point now with the loss to UMD. I think an at-large is now officially out of reach, even if they sweep wisconsin and UMD/UND in the first round and go 2-1 in the F5. They must run the table in the playoffs to reach the regional.

Postseason tourney games that require multiple OT's are counted as W's and L's.

Harley - pretty much every team plays better with a lead. You'll see the "when leading after 2" stat with win pct's around .900 for most teams. The "when trailing after 2" stat is what is most telling: mediocre to bad teams will have a win pct under .300, while the good teams will be closer to .500.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

I have heard from the grapevine many NHL scouts don't like the rink size in Mariucci. If the Gophers didn't have the tradition they likely would lose out on the best players.
