Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013

The one problem I had was that sure, it was great winning all of those awards, but on Friday, we have to play an OSU team that came to the WCHA Banquet and didn't get any recognition outside of the scholastic awards. After sitting there watching a ton of other people go up to accept awards, might they not feel they have something to prove? If I'm remembering correctly, Lauren Smith of MSU was the only member of a team that was seeded lower than fourth that made any of the ALL-WCHA teams. It was spread around a little more last year.

My own opinion is that there is too much focus on the awards, too early. I wish they would wait a bit, maybe until the Frozen Four weekend to make the announcements. Recognition is great and eveything, but there is still a lot of hockey to be played and I think that's where the teams (and our team in particular!) should be focusing ALL of their attention.

Agree with you both. Had the same thoughts the other day. Clearly Gophers are a HUGE favorite. Sometimes these "early" accolades can lead to a bad omen. All it takes is one bad outing and yer done.

I suspect, if you ask them, Minny would rather lose a game this weekend, than after this weekend, if they had to swallow one loss. Me thinks, the WCHA final will end up being the biggest hurdle they face to keep the streak alive.

NCAA Quarterfinal. If they win the WCHA Tourney, then barring an upset winner in the ECAC or Hockey East, they'll have to turn around and play the same team a week later with both teams' seasons on the line. That will be by far the most pressure they've faced all season. From that aspect, it would be much better to have a fresh opponent, even a more talented one, than a team that just finished playing a tournament on that rink.

As seems to be my wont, I'll suggest that it's more complicated than this. Sometimes it's the other way around and the team that loses in the conference tournament is psychologically beaten before they take the ice the next week. That's certainly the way it worked for the Gophers last year.

I'll agree with the first sentence, but not the second. I thought UND played a better game in the NCAAs than they did in the WCHA semi a year ago. They certainly competed better.

Anyway, right now there is only one game on Minnesota's schedule, so Ohio State is all we have to think about.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013

So what is the word on Kessel?

I got the impression from her playing a couple minutes in that first game with Bemidji St that she was good enough to play if it was felt she was needed, and hence she didn't play after the first goal was scored.

But then some comment was made in an article hinting that she might not be available for this weekends games?! Is Frost going to dress her but only play her if he feels she is needed?!

Or whats up? Does anyone know?

As always, thanks for the links.

Looks like the Gophers have decided on a new challenge: Win every post-season game with a shutout. At this point, it wouldn't surprise me.:o Best of luck to your excellent team.

On a somewhat related note, the Chicago Blackhawks have fallen short in their bid to become "The Gopher Women of the NHL." 30 games is pretty impressive, of course. But for the real royalty, it's 45 games and counting...

Another shutout and W, and another championship and that rather smallish D with the game winner!

Congratulations to the Minnesota Golden Gophers on winning the WCHA championship!

Now, one last goal to achieve, and it truly will be a season for the ages - possibly one that may never be duplicated.

You don't want that "first" loss to come in the next 3 games. Sudden death from this point on until the end of the season heightens the stakes.

Truer words have never been spoken!

Something like the 2-0 lead in hockey I guess. I wouldn't have said it at this point, but who knows. :)

Anyone know if there are records kept for consecutive scoreless minutes?
