Minnesota Golden Gopher Season 2018-19: The Motzko Era Begins!

I guess ultimately it doesn’t matter if guys are underperforming due to effort vs just not being that good, the end result is the same and those guys need to be replaced by someone more effective.

Even though the end result may be the same, if I'm the coach I'd much prefer having a group of guys who are less talented, but are always busting their butts, compared to a team that relies on a few talented "stars" who only try hard when a good opportunity to score presents itself. Right now it seems we have a strange combination of both types, and it may be the worst of all worlds.

I honestly have little confidence in any of the guys on D. Some of the younger guys show promise. But with only 10 games left in the RS, overall they still lack consistent effort and execution of the basic fundamentals. I'm unfamiliar with Raboin and his D coaching style and ability, but IMO his effectiveness as a coach in developing the D corp this season has been minuscule.

When he coached the D at SCSU, there seemed to be a constant threat of leaving a backside winger float free. That was my biggest complaint against his coaching.

I hear ya but I think most of these guys are what they are, Guentzel generally had a good rep for developing D and he couldn't get much out of them a year ago (and as we remember Lucia seemingly tried to hide his D), now it's a new coach and it's the same deal. Other than one nice hip check Zuhlsdorf is just comically bad at denying zone entries and he's not very good at doing anything with the puck when he gets it, not to mention he does nothing offensively. I think in that first Badger game last weekend he had the puck at his own blue line and threw it to the other team in the neutral zone, a guy got behind him, and they got a 3 on 1. As much deserved grief as Sadek gets his partner is a far bigger problem. We all remember Phillips doing snow angels trying to play D that one game, he has a ton of head scratcher moments and the coaches clearly don't think he does much on offense seeing as he got kicked off the main PP in favor of going with 5 fwds (side note: apparently we have a top 5 PP after last weekend). The upperclassmen like Sadek and Nanne are ok at denying zone entries and a bit more steady on D but they throw the puck around a lot and hit a lot of shin pads in the offensive zone. Brinkmann is super young and shows flashes of competency carrying the puck into the zone and helping the offense transition and isn't terribly noticeable on D (good) but the last I checked he had one of the worst shot differentials on the team (not sure if that's changed more recently). And then after that you have a hodgepodge of Rossini and the other guys who don't play all that much or do anything to separate themselves from the pack.

Hopefully next year we get some reinforcements because elevating the role of Phillips and one of Rossini/Stucker/Denman into your 1st or 2nd pairing likely isn't going to improve things.

No one said otherwise - only that if they ever do pull their heads out of their a***s while still here maybe then we will finally see the potential. Not holding my breath but something something Dumb & Dumber quote...

Big series coming up - if not for trying to realistically get back into the PWR be season's end to show they can put together a full weekend of solid games rather than the Jekyll and Hyde like play they've been so apt to do for most of the season. Would hope the buzz previously experienced at Mecca for the first time all season will repeat itself. Was fun to finally see that happen.

I agree, but unless the team finishes the season really strong I'm afraid "the buzz" experienced on Saturday is unlikely to repeat itself the rest of the way. For many longtime fans, this up-and-(mostly)down season has been a bitter pill to swallow. :(

Just look at tickets available for this weekend. It's not going to be close.

I just took a look at my section (19) for tonight, and the map is showing only one seat that's available.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Season 2018-19: The Motzko Era Begins!

You're in a STH section... Middle sections look like that for every game. Middle sections are also more prone to no shows on games not against the badgers/whioux/UMD/SCSU. The tickets they are trying to sell are sections 22-4 and 11 and 15. Trust me it won't be close tonight.

Maybe they'll learn from last week and cut the concession prices permanently knowing the increased ticket revenue makes up for it.

I didn't realize the middle sections were season ticket holders only. For whatever reason Section 19 tends to not have as many no-shows as other middle sections. Our row in particular is almost always full.

Not exclusively STH, but those middle sections are ~98% sold out by the time single game tickets go on sale. And the reason I say they are more prone to no shows is because those that purchase single game tickets are clearly more likely to attend than those with the sunk cost of STH. It shows, but because the end sections rarely get close to selling out these days, you end up with every section looking half full.

If you look at Jim Dahl's latest model, Gophers will need to win at least seven and more likely eight of the last ten regular season games to move up to a safe place in PWR. Do you really see that happening based on what you've seen from this team so far?

I don't think my post alluded to that no. I don't think it's realistic at this point which is why I emphasized the need to start playing more consistent hockey in hopes it could lead to a conference tournament win.

Gotcha. Yeah, they've shown they can play with anyone in the B1G. Just putting together a run better than a weekend split just doesn't seem to be there. But get into the conference tourney and they could get it done. Bob's pretty good at getting teams through the conference tourneys. NCAA's? Well, you've seen what's happened there.

Wow. Did someone tell the Gophs the game was only 20 minutes long tonight, or did the equipment manager forget to take of the skate guards after the first period? Either way, they pretty much stood around most of that period and poked at pucks as Michigan skaters flew by. UMi doesn't look like that great of a team. With a good effort, they should have a good shot at beating them in a given game. But this team just can't put together a consistent effort. It is hard to fathom how a team can drop its effort that much from one period to the next. Starting to think I should have watch the Wild instead.
