Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey: 2011-2012 Season Thread

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey: 2011-2012 Season Thread

Well Brooky, and playbpg, it seems that UNH did leave everything they knew about hockey in Durham! We just aren't in the same building, let alone ice surface with you guys now.....funny how the guys online doing the game were trying their best to talk about how the storied rivalry between the teams has actually been in UNH favor, but still, you could see with Kessel's 3rd goal, she knew how easy it would be to rush the net and score.....oh well, hopefully the Wildcats will give the Gophers a better game tomorrow....hope that all the UNH fans enjoy Minnesota hospitality....next year we get to entertain!
FYI... at least the men's team won 5-0...tomorrow it's the football teams turn to beat Maine!

Very nice...and gratifying to see added ice time, fine play and the resulting contributions of 3rd & 4th lines tonight.

Amanda Kessel, what can one say? What a night for #8!!

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey: 2011-2012 Season Thread

OK, so apparently I conveniently had forgotten about the UNH win over Minnesota at Ridder early in the 2006-07 season. Even so, in two of the last three games played between teams representing these two Universities, Minnesota's number 8 has scored 4 goals.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey: 2011-2012 Season Thread

I had to do a quadruple take when I saw 11-0 on collegehockeystats.net .. wow.. UNH has fallen THAT far?

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey: 2011-2012 Season Thread

For the first 18 minutes, it looked like we were going to have a fairly competitive game. In the first, UNH had times when they carried play and had some chances. After the Lawrence goal at 18:53, I could just sense a change in the demeanor of both teams. For MN it really go the motor running, where for UNH they shut down; none more evident than in Kessel's third goal where the defenseman made a very feable attempt to stop her.
Jamie Wood told me that it was going to be a bit of a rebuilding process...I guess I didn't understand how true that statement was. Only one senior on the team so hopefully in a couple of years things will get better.
The MN PP was clicking as well, going 4 for 6 with the extra skater. I wish Raty finished the game as she needs 2 shutouts to tie the all-time record at the U.

There was absolutely No Access to All Access until the third period. Was tuning in hoping to see a more competitive game and to watch UNH's Heather Kashman. Any Gopher fans notice her play in the first two periods and have any comments about it?

This is the second time this season, the other coming against SCSU, where Noora left after two with a shutout intact, and I believe it has happened in previous years as well. There have been other instances where she has made decisions that clearly put her teams interest before her own. Kudos to her for her commitment to her team.

She's definitely one of the Wildcats that one notices. She had flashes, particularly in the first period. I'm guessing that she'll be able to create more of a match-up problem against some opponents than she could against Minnesota, where the only D that isn't her size or taller is a senior that is accustomed to facing players like her. Kashman definitely has skill; I'd imagine that as she fully adjusts to the college game and gets a little quicker, she'll be a force.

I know, I know, but for the UNH fans out west, if you Gopher fans would pass along that UNH did beat Maine today to win the 250 year old musket again, and make the FCS playoffs....you see when you go to a state school, FYI for the Minnesota fans, that asks for a yearly budget of 81 million, and gets 49 million, you take what you can earn.....come on Wildcats, skate the Gophers hard....Go Wildcats!

Jamie Wood was just talking about the budget problem at UNH to Minnesota boosters, and he was hopeful that it wouldn't have major impacts on your women's hockey program. I join him in that hope.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey: 2011-2012 Season Thread

appreciate the understanding ARM......as I listen to the discussion of paying athletes, or hearing that Penn State football brings in over $50 million alone to the school, or that Rutgers built a recruitment center for $5 million, it takes it's toll....we all know that there are varying other factors, but it does sting when you deal with a state that should decide if they want to have an institution for higher leaning or not! We're all alumni for our respective schools that would do anything for our Alma Mater, but being that salmon swimming up river for some 35 years now gets tiresome....add to that our past success' because of talented players and wonderful athletes, you hate to have lean years....

These Gophers are pretty good.

UNH is clearly not the UNH of the 2006 NCAA Frozen Four, but, still this was New Hampshire, the original measuring stick for women's hockey, the beast of the east. It is much harder to produce your best hockey when you are not sleeping at home in the bed you are used to sleeping in but the hockey that the UofM played was very, very clearly not the game that UNH was prepared to play. These Gophers are pretty good.

Good luck to the Wildcats the rest of the way.

The next test for these Gophers is whether they can now produce this sort of dominating hockey while they are the ones who are not at home. It should be an interesting test next weekend in Boston.

Fasten your seatbelts, I think we are in for an exciting ride.

I hope that you guys get the chance to read Coach McCloskey's blog...if I could use a computer, i would put in the link but the address will be at the end....I totally enjoy Brian's honesty and understanding of hockey, let alone the women's game, so in reading his comments about our team and the classroom technique's of the Gophers, you are right Curtain man, you folks will have a great ride this year.....phenominal team! Try and read Brian's blog and see why we all enjoy the game's highs and lows......it's what makes us better.....good luck you Gophers you!

I am compelled to notice that as soon as I praised GopherSports.com for posting post game interviews they went from three videos to two after Friday night's game and appear to have abandoned the practice entirely with no videos after the Saturday game.

Shame!

After some games, I know they've had trouble with the video, such as no audio on the recording. Didn't hear anything specific about it this week.

Looking down the road a bit, there's good news and bad news. The good is that Sarah Davis has been named to the Canadian roster for the {insert sponsor of the year's name here} Cup in Germany. Congrats to Sarah! The bad is that according to the event's schedule, she'll miss the series with Wisconsin coming out of the holiday break. Looking only at Canadians, the Badgers get hit harder, as Carolyne Prévost, Brittany Haverstock, and Saige Pacholok are rostered as well, although it's possible that Mira will be playing for Finland; don't know, maybe habs does? Obviously Prévost and Haverstock in particular will be missed by Wisco', but Davis is very key to the Gophs.

Very classy. I also really liked how he described the game of hockey, what's key to winning, etc.
