Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey: 2011-2012 Season Thread

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey: 2011-2012 Season Thread

Kudos to Laura Halldorson for deep sixing the political correctness that has plagued her colour commentating in the past with her comment in the last half of the third period referring to Jenna McParland..."if I was Shannon Miller, she'd be done for the night for those three stupid penalties that she has taken tonight".
I believe it's injured goaltender Alyssa Grogan providing color for the Gopher video these days. McParland very impressive player when she's on the ice. Very costly penalties as noted. I'm sure she'll learn to keep her head and be much more disciplined as her career progresses. Pretty clear she's going to be a major force though, IMO.

I agree with respect to McParland...very impressive player...but with respect to tonight, she'll have a lot to think about after her third penalty which resulted in a UM power play goal that sealed the deal.

The commentator was speaking to Grogan before the game but the colour commentator during the game was Halldorson.

Blackbeard. Thanks so much for tuning in last night. It was a fun game to announce. However, my partner was/is, in fact, Alyssa Grogan.

I also agree that McParland is a very nice player. Has got some serious skills and would have scored a couple of times if it were not for Nora Raty who made several nice saves on her. But the cross check when the Dogs had the power play in the 2nd, and knocking the goalies stick away in the 3rd were just unexcusable.

Do we expect another typical MN-UMD penalty-filled game tonight?

I hope not. The Gophs saw firsthand how damaging a single penalty can be last weekend; they can't afford to repeat that mistake today. We can live with the penalties a player has to take to prevent a scoring chance, but not those silly pushing/shoving calls. Have to hope the refs call only acts that deserve a penalty, although it looked like Kessel last night got two minutes for getting dropped, something that always seemed to happen to Darwitz versus UMD. They seemed to be smarter about defending Noora after the whistle last night. Mira in particular was very good about imposing her presence without doing anything illegal. You know UMD will come hungry tonight; we have to bring it as well.

Yeah, I couldn't believe that one last night. Do you believe that that was Amanda's first penalty of the season?
Hope the Gophs can stay out of the box too. They have been doing a really great job so far this season. Second-fewest penalty minutes at 8.6 per game. Wisconsin is just a hair better at about 7 1/2.
That may be a big reason they were able to win last night (with 2 ppg) and get a big split at Wisconsin.

I sit corrected and am in utter amazement.

I have to say that either, one of those electronic voice recognition graphs would over lay Halldorson's voice perfectly with Grogan's or I was on another planet last night.

Not that I minded, but I thought that some of her (Halldorson's...so I thought) comments were more "homerish" than usual but I chalked that up to her deep sixing the political correctness as I mentioned earlier...which I applauded. Some of her comments which I took to be Halldorson's (which obviously just as easily could have been from a UM player) just reinforced my belief that it was Halldorson. As a matter of fact, I believe you mentioned before the game that Grogan would be providing the colour commentating but when the game started I thought to myself "that's Halldorson..there must have been some mix up".

Anyway, my apologies to Grogan and to Brookyone and thank you for correcting me...I still can't believe it!...maybe someone should tell Halldorson.

And in addition to my apologies to Grogan...great job! And know that you've always got a spot as a stand in double on the audio side.

With respect to McParland...I agree...immature and selfish or just plain stupid is what I would call her actions that lead to her last penalty...at the very least, even if we give her every benefit of the doubt and assume she was trying to sweep Raty's stick out of her own way (yes, I know, that's almost so unlikely as to be out of the realm of comprehensible) she has to be smart enough, to be able to be so highly touted at this level, to have it cross her mind before actually doing it what such an action might otherwise be "misconstrued to be". So, completely inexcusable, as you mentioned.

If someone would inform me as to your name then I would no longer be at said loss. I apologize for not knowing it...I kind of figured one of the Gopher regulars here would inform me.

While we are on the subject of names I respectfully submit to you that the pronunciation of Audrey Cournoyer's last name is "Corn-why'-yay" .

Again, great job of doing the play by play last night...you added noticeable value to an already entertaining game played by two great teams. I'll be watching today's game...you may have to remind me if Grogan is doing the colour commentating again, that it's actually her.

The games with Duluth always seem to be among the most physical they play as are the men's games with the hated Sioux. I agree that Mira played an excellent game and made a nice recovery on a giveaway in the third. Other than a couple of errant clearing attempts I thought the team played a very solid 60 minutes. I liked the shuffling of a couple players in and out which gave some others a little more rest. I still wish Frost would play a fourth line once or twice a game and especially with the earlier start time today. And not just in the last minute. I suppose that's tough to do against the Dogs. Love those hard hat "dirty" goals!

When I've tuned into the away games I've been very impressed with her color commentary. She seems like a real natural up there in the booth, and the two of you make a great broadcasting team. Keep up the good work!

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey: 2011-2012 Season Thread

I thought it was a highly entertaining game between two upper level teams. I agree with other comments here that McParland is going to give lots of people lots of trouble before she is done at Duluth and I also think the freshman defender Lacquette looks very solid. Wong is obviously still very, very good, as is Wilson. UMD looked awfully good for a team missing its best player.

I thought that home ice advantage was huge. My impression was that early in the 3rd Coach Miller skipped her third line a couple of times to try to get one of her top lines against the Gopher 3rd. Minnesota countered with the advantage of last change by matching line for line and soon enough both teams were regularly rolling all three lines again.

The game was actually very close, much closer than shots on goal would indicate. If you ignore the empty net goal at the end though, the score was pretty indicative of what the game was. The play reflected what a 3-1 game looks like, particularly when the third goal is a late power play after an ill advised penalty.

I am hoping for more of the same this afternoon, hoping for both more entertaining hockey and a repeat of the result.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey: 2011-2012 Season Thread

We discussed the first line and the need for them to set the tone after the loss in Bemidji. I guess they were listening...and did just that in both games.

Sweating too many odd man rushes allowed though. Six points vs. UMD is good...way better than good actually.

Also have to give a shout out to Harss. Several saves in the hard to believe category from her.

I won't complain about so many Golden scoring chances missed this week. ;)

The rumor mill. Anyone else hear a rumor regarding the installation of a Jumbotron with all the bells and whistles at Ridder in the near future? Made possible by a very large, very generous donation. No idea if the rumor is based on any factual info.

Alyssa Grogan mentioned during today's game that a generous someone donated $550,000 for said gizmo and that the team is quite excited about it.

I wish you would write the pronounciation guide for Duluth. I can actually voice her name when laid out like that. The way it's printed on the UM-D game notes is "cour-nuah-yay". Yeah, I just can't get my mouth to voice it correctly when written out like that. I do appreciate the help, Blackbeard.
Alyssa has been a great addition this season. She still has some post-concusion symptoms from time to time which doesn't allow her to practice, let alone play. But she is a natural in the booth, and she doesn't mind calling it like she sees it...good, bad or otherwise; which is quite refreshing from those who only see the world through rose-colored glasses (or in this case maroon-colored).
Good wins this weekend as both games were hard-fought. Would be interesting how things would have been had Haley Irwin been available for the Dogs.

Thanks again for tuning in.
For the record, my last name is Dan Hamann (pronounced: HA-man).

Dan...I forgot that I also could have mentioned Yvon Cournoyer, if you are old enough to remember him, who played for the Montreal Canadiens (French spelling of "Canadians") in the 70's...apparently no relation but the same pronunciation.

Thanks for mentioning Grogan's injury...I hadn't heard the nature of the injury and was wondering since yesterday what it was. Interesting how things happen...I started a thread on concussions on this forum a few weeks ago and initially included some very interesting information that was given a lot of major air time on our National News one evening about the topic. Ever since then I keep coming across people who I know or know of who have recently sustained such an injury. I had previously mentioned in the Mercyhurst thread that a concussion ended Delaney Collins' carreer...Team Canada, now asst. coach at Mercyhurst. It's a topic that is receiving a huge amount of attention up here especially since Sidney Crosby has become a victim to the injury.

I was surprised and dissappointed that there was no instant replay during the broadcasts from a facility like Ridder. Do they not have it or was its use just not available?

Another great game today and another great job...thanks.

"cour-nuah-yay" is better than "corn-why-yay" although most of us up here know him better as "The RoadRunner".

Here is are a couple of example courtesy Hall of Fame Broadcaster Danny Gallivan.

Very nice crowd listed in the box score as 1,940. Many of course came for the hockey but my guess is that much of the crowd increase was achieved by following the UW Kohl Center model of free admission. Free admission to Ridder Arena was available all weekend with a donation to the hunger relief organization Second Harvest Heartland. For perspective the men's game played 3 and a half hours later next door in Mariucci drew 10,234.

A very satisfying weekend of hockey for the U of M with the men nicely complementing the women's sweep of the Bulldogs with a sweep of their own against archrival North Dakota.

I wasn't aware that the "free admission with a food donation" was good for both days. I brought a good sized bag on Friday but came empty handed yesterday...should have split it up! (too bad I don't have Brooky's connections) ;)

Indeed it was. To go 4-0 against those two teams is a major accomplishment. Now if we can just get that football program turned around...progress being made on that front but still a long ways to go.

Enjoyed watching the Youtube clip. :)

He and Jean Beliveau two of my favorites as a kid. Used to love them Habs...until the North Stars arrived on scene.
