Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey: 2011-2012 Season Thread

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey: 2011-2012 Season Thread

Dan...I forgot that I also could have mentioned Yvon Cournoyer, if you are old enough to remember him, who played for the Montreal Canadiens (French spelling of "Canadians") in the 70's...apparently no relation but the same pronunciation.

I was surprised and dissappointed that there was no instant replay during the broadcasts from a facility like Ridder. Do they not have it or was its use just not available?

Another great game today and another great job...thanks.

Thanks Blackbeard. No replay because it is only a one-camera shoot, and that angle is the same that the teams use for their film sessions. BTN does have a multi-cam shoot when they are in town, and even so, I'm not sure if they do replays. I would imagine so.

Great links! I LOVE the vintage games. However, I'm just a bit too young to remember Yvon Counoyer as the second link you posted was of a game that took place when I was literally one month old...lol
Unfortunate for me, I grew up out in western MN and the only games we got were of the old North Star, and only on rabbit-ears over UHF, and only if the weather was just right. My earliest memories were of Giles Meloche, Gary Sargent, and Dean Talafus. Bobby Smith and Dino Ciccarelli were still a few years away. So I wasn't exposed to much hockey as a young kid, but would strap on my roller skates and tool around the basement at the farmhouse with a stick my dad made for me. No curvature on the blade. The "hockey puck" was and old wood disc from my Tinker-toy set.
In high school I ended up playing basketball because I was 6-4, but I played under the basket like a defenseman in front of his net. How I wish we had a hockey program when I was growing up :( That's just a little about where I come from.

Nice victory earlier today for team USA over Canada for the Four Nations Championship. Both current Gophers (Kessell and Schoullis) played well in the tournament -- although Jen was a healthy scratch for today's game.
USA takes it 4-3 in a shootout.
I see Gigi Marvin was on the squad too, but is now playing D. Since when did that happen?

Brooky, I hope that the Wildcats remember to bring their game with them as they fly out....evidently this weekend while the team traveled to both games, they left their "game" back in Durham.....hopefully the Gophers will bring out their best...play up to the competition level....

Me too zoofer. I'm hoping for a couple entertaining games. My guess is the Wildcats play well. Minnesota most often seems to get their opponents best game. Always enjoy watching less familiar opponents from outside the WCHA. Hopefully Minnesota doesn't disappoint. S'pose there'll be a couple future Wildcats from parts hereabouts in attendance.

Excellent stuff over in the UNH thread. Can you imagine a program where the booster club posts a 9 or so minute video every week with interviews and information from the coach and key players?

Minnesota has very, very much to aspire to. I'm looking at you PowerPlayClub.

I was reminded by what the UNH coach said in his comments on the upcoming weekend that this is the first time Minnesota and New Hampshire have faced off since the infamous Bobbi Ross game in the 2006 NCAA semi-finals at Mariucci.

Closed circuit to UNH, Ross is going to fake forehand and draw to the backhand on the penalty shot.

That's just a little joke.

My remembrance of the game is that UNH had an excellent team and had a right to feel disappointed at not advancing to the final.

My remembrance of the final is that Wisconsin was certainly too good for Minnesota and probably would have been too good for New Hampshire as well.

I have that game on DVD and watch it when I need a good ride on my cycle trainer. I've seen it a dozen times since watching it live, and I still think we're gonna win!

However, we met the next year in the Fall, and UNH pulled it off at last

Couldn't help but notice that UNH hit very well that evening, going 6 for 18 for a .333 average. Yikes! But for that to happen again this weekend against Raty....well, the odds of me winning the Chuck-a-Puck are a lot better. ;)

The fault for the website's deficiencies rest primarily with yours truly. I have neglected the site woefully. My intent was to port it to a different platform where managing content would be much easier and more options would exist. I have made little progress on that. As it is today, the basic design of needing to have a menu entry on the hope page for every other page on the site discourages adding much more. Until I get it ported, I'm sorry, but it won't get much better.

Once we do, we'll still have the matter of needing to generate more content, like video presentations with coaches and players. Luckily, I believe MBTC just volunteered to lead that effort!

I was surprised that Coach Mac didn't mention the win in Ridder in the interview. IIRC, neither team's goaltending was stellar that night, so maybe it is one of those nights he'd rather not remember.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey: 2011-2012 Season Thread

Wow. With last week off, looks like most of you did the same with the message board (yes, I'm guilty, too)
Let's try to have some fun and create a discussion with some weekly picks:

Ohio State at Syracuse
OSU had quite the week against Wisconsin two weeks ago, even without their big gun Natalie Spooner. They gave Buckey all they could and may have proved that they are deeper than one would first think. Syracuse doesn't have the fire power to stay with the Buckeyes. OSU sweeps 5-1 and 6-2.

St. Cloud State at Niagara
Niagara is perhaps the best team no one ever hears of. They win in a pair of tight ones: 2-1 and 1-0.

Wisconsin at Rensselaer
RPI actually has a winning record on the road (3-2-3), and zero wins at home (0-5-1). If the game was in Madison, I may have to think about this one...but not much. Wisconsin in a sweep again: 6-2 and 5-1

Minnesota State at North Dakota
I can see No Dak laying an egg here if the Lams are still suffering from jet lag after their 4-Nations appearance. I think the Mavs get a point this weekend....going out on a limb here...4-4(ND wins SO) and 6-1 in favor of the team soon-to-be-formerly-known-as "the Sioux".

New Hampshire at Minnesota
I think the Wildcats could give a couple of good games here. Still thinking sweep (call me a homer) but not by as much as some may think...4-2 and 3-0.

Hope to see you all at Ridder. If not, FREE AUDIO at gophersports.com. (Shameless plug :) )

Those in From the East already had plenty of Snow Experience this year during the first Blast of winter that dumped up to 25 inches of snow on the ground three weeks ago in some places in Mass and CT.
