Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey: 2011-2012 Season Thread

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey: 2011-2012 Season Thread

As I've noted before about funds, we've been looking to get that same video scoreboard at UNH now for years, but since it costs about $1.5 million, as I've been told, that is a pipe dream for us now....even having Adam Sandler, a NH homeboy, wearing a Wildcat hockey T-shirt in his movie, and we can't somehow get ALUMNI to help us......pitiful no? Not a rip on Sandler, just wicked frustrating!

Only $500,000 for the jumbotron style scoreboard being installed at Ridder.

So, please disregard my post and my apologies if the video caused you any unnecessary pain.
Watching it live wasn't fun, but after the fact, it simply is what happened. I spent enough time in my younger days as a Vikings fan that there are many hours worth of replays that can be troubling to the eye. At least there are some happy memories that I can recall as well. A sports fan without great memories simply needs to support more teams. :)

I have been looking at recent results and our schedule. With losses again by UMD and Bemidji, the luster fades a bit from our 12-2 record. It appears only the Wisconsin series was against one of the truly elite teams. The upcoming schedule will tell us more about our team. In the next twelve games we play two each against Wisconsin and North Dakota -- that may be the toughest remaining road series. We also play the two at Harvard, two against dangerous Ohio State, two at Duluth -- tough regardless of their record, and conclude the twelve against Bemidji. We probably need at least 11-1 to have any chance of finishing ahead of Wisconsin.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey: 2011-2012 Season Thread

We definitely haven't proven anything yet, but I think that there are some encouraging signs. This year's Gophers seem more consistent than in the past. Their first period in Madison was quite bad, but other than that, their lows haven't been that low. Even in the game that they lost in Bemidji, they were just a little off in terms of effort and execution, and that was enough for the Beavers to take it to them. Minnesota has played 42 periods to date, and their record in them is 30-3-9, meaning that they've outscored the opponent 30 times, been outscored three times, and been even nine times. Unfortunately, two of those three period losses were enough to cost them games. For comparison, last year through 14 games the Goph's were 21-9-12 in periods and 9-5-2 in games, and the caliber of opposition wasn't much different -- last year we'd played UND @ home, this season we've played @BSU instead.

One comment regarding the Bemidji loss to NoDak. That was a Beavers' home game, but it was played in Crookston, which is really a neutral site. Given BSU is a team that plays very well at home, that puts it at a bit of a competitive disadvantage. I know that they did something similar last season, playing a UND home game in Roseau instead of Grand Forks, but in terms of evaluating the strength of teams, I think it is a factor.

On our third try, we ran a winning streak to five.

Did anyone purchase the video of the Saturday game at Harvard, and if so, was the quality worth it?

Yes...and no, I didn't think it was. Thinking I'll stick with the blog tomorrow.

There is free audio from Gophersports, although it went AWOL for a large chunk of the third period. Coupled with the blog, it is at least an improvement over trying to follow a game with only a live box score.

The Gopher audio broadcasts have worked great for me. I've listened to women's hockey, men's hockey and football.

Yeah, sorry about that. The connection in the arena wasn't the best, and with a couple of other windows open on the computer, I think the speed dropped enough when those windows refreshed that it killed the stream. Will see how it works early on and hope that it maintains throughout.
Other than the early goal that was waved off, you didn't miss much.
BTW...gorgeous here in Cambridge with temps in the 60s. Actually lathered up a sweat on the walk from the hotel to the arena.

I also missed the 5-on-3 goal and the action that led up to it. You may have been back earlier, but the window continues to scroll a "we are experiencing technical difficulties" message, so it isn't obvious that one should continue to click the "listen" button throughout in the hope that the feed is back. I got no more than half of the third period. Before you switched to dial up, you were back on the air, because we could hear you, but you weren't doing play-by-play. Maybe in the future if something like that happens where you have to work an intermittent technical problem, ask Alyssa to continue to provide audio updates while you are busy. Sure it is great to have an entertaining call of the game, but if that isn't possible, it is invaluable just to get information like time remaining and which team is carrying play delivered in any manner. Although I suspect that Alyssa would actually do well with that, because she is perceptive and is able to articulate what she sees. The blog might suffice during the interim while you're off line, but Sara is distracted interfacing with you and handling messages from people saying that they are having audio trouble, so she isn't able to blog as much.

Anyway, nice work getting back up and running in a crisis situation. When the game gets to those final few minutes, it is really nice to have audio rather than something like live stats.

We could certainly use another goal or two, and no more unnecessary penalties!

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey: 2011-2012 Season Thread

Seems like we're giving Noora less support than we have at any point of the season. We need to clean it up in the third, play in Harvard's end, and not take offensive zone penalties.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey: 2011-2012 Season Thread

Great road sweep as the Gophers win 7-3. Congrats to the entire team and coaching staff.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey: 2011-2012 Season Thread

Nice to see the second line going well today. If they start clicking, it could take our team to another level.

From what I heard both goalies played out of their minds Saturday, but I think she (and Bellamy) was still napping after yesterday's outing. She big time got herself out of position on two of the goals.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey: 2011-2012 Season Thread

Noora is very aggressive, and that results in her getting beat badly once in a while. However, it seemed that we were giving up a lot more odd-man rushes than I'm accustomed to seeing. Maybe that's just a credit to Harvard's speed. And of course, 5-on-3 PKs are a recipe for disaster.

Here's a link to a story on Rachel Ramsey by Eric Kraushar of the Chanhassen Villager.

Bellamy played out of her mind on Saturday. Raty didn't make many tough saves at all. Harvard couldn't generate a consistent attack and many of their shots never made it through to Raty. Without Bellamy, the score would have been 5 or 6-1. Raty had it much easier.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey: 2011-2012 Season Thread

Just want to say to the Minnesota fans that you have a great team and it was fun to watch them play. Really was impressed with Emily West. She is a very consistent player who always seems to be in the right place at the right time. Your D is big and fast and the way you transition the puck from defense to offense is outstanding. Certainly faster than any team in the ECAC save perhaps Cornell.

Best of luck the rest of the way. Wish some of your games were on TV.
