Michigan Tech, best season in 30 years, part two!

Re: Michigan Tech, best season in 30 years, part two!

Eh, given the opportunity cost of playing in leagues that pay worse than the AHL or DEL (i.e. forgoing the salary you could earn by putting your degree to work), I'm not impressed by a 50% figure. I mean, who's proud that Dan Sova is making essentially minimum wage in the SPHL?
Most of those guys are not leaving Tech from super high paying degree programs. Yes, there are exceptions that take the engineering route at Tech, but I would guess most of them are not giving up a huge income amount by playing hockey over an entry level job that would utilize a 4-year degree. Heck, if I could give up my desk and get paid half as much to play hockey year round, I would be giving it some serious consideration. The reduction in stress level alone would be worth it.

You might see more players stick around for longer careers, however the AHL has limits on how many veteran players that can be on a team's roster. The league doesn't want guys "hanging-on" in the AHL, even if the have the talent, as they want the spots open to develop new talent for their parent NHL clubs. Former Huskies forward Jimmy Roy is a good example. He was Mr Manitoba Moose in the AHL - loved by the team, the fans and management but they eventually had to cut him loose after 9 seasons because of veteran roster limits. Jimmy went on to play in Europe for a five more years before coming back to North America as the Winnipeg Jets Coordinator of Player Development.

Congrats to T. Kero. To combine player of the year with student-athlete of the year is incredible.

As a fan of the Sioux City Musketeers, I was pulling for some accolades for Cliff Watson. Was it a case of "defensive defensemen don't win awards"?

I think so, he is definitely quite solid back there for us.

Congratulations to a slew of Huskies named in the all-WCHA teams.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR - Tanner Kero
STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE YEAR - Tanner Kero
ALL-WCHA FIRST TEAM - Tanner Kero & Jamie Phillips
ALL-WCHA SECOND TEAM - Alex Petan & Malcolm Gould
ALL-WCHA THIRD TEAM - Blake Pietila & Shane Hanna

Tech also placed 11 players on the all-Academic team.

wow!! congratulations to all! impressive stuff!

I'm absolutely shocked Mel didn't get WCHA Coach of the Year.

Hastings did a great job this year and I don't want to take anything away from what MSU accomplished...but they were picked to finish first and did...by one point! Everyone expected them to be good and they were. Tech was picked 2d or 3rd by most and had a dominant season. Only one conference loss outside of MSU? How good would their record be if we had only played MSU once v. twice? Maybe I see the award to coach Pearson as a result of his body of work over the last four years, but all that aside he took this team beyond all expectations for this year. I'm can't believe he wasn't picked!

Mel lost to Hastings three times. Not saying I'm unhappy with Mel, but I have no issue with Hastings getting the award

There is something that has been sticking in my head ever since listening to the Mel Pearson Show on Monday. One of the questions was: What does Mel mean when he says he "likes this team"? I think Mel almost answered this one straight-up, meaning not in coach-speak. He said this team can win against any team on any night, and it is just a feeling you have. Listening to it, I got the impression that he was going to say that this team can win the whole thing. But pulled back, as coaches do. I can't help but think that a guy like Mel, who has coached teams that have won it all, and more that have gotten there and fallen just short, has a pretty good feel for when a team has "it".

Playoffs start today. 8 more to go. Get it done.

Totally agree. And when you're the league favorite, the pressure is on and the target is on your back. He had his team ready to play, night in and night out.

Tech fans are starting to sound like Michigan fans. Always whining about something. Enjoy the ride people. This won't happen every year.

My thoughts exactly. If the award were down to only two coaches, and they are 3-0-1 head-to-head, it's a pretty clear winner. Looking forward to taking home the MacNaughton in future years.

Spot on . . . good advice!

Easy, big fella . . . that may be a bit harsh.

True. That may have been a bit harsh. Hope the SDC is packed and rocking tonight. I think UAH's goalie will stand on his head and keep the series close.

Very impressive: Shane Hanna leads all defensemen nationally in plus/minus at plus-28, and is third overall behind Eichel and O’Regan of Boston University.

2010 MacNaughton Champs - Denver
2010 National Champs - Minnesota-Duluth

2006 MacNaughton Champs - Minnesota
2006 National Champs - Wisconsin

2005 MacNaughton Champs - Colorado College/Denver
2005 National Champs - Denver

2004 MacNaughton Champs - North Dakota
2004 National Champs - Denver

2003 MacNaughton Champs - Colorado College
2003 National Champs - Minnesota

2003 MacNaughton Champs - Denver
2003 National Champs - Minnesota

Of the last 6 National Champions from the WCHA, only 1 won the MacNaughton and it wasn't outright. Lets make it 7.

Re: Michigan Tech, best season in 30 years, part two!

In Michigan Tech's 3 NCAA Championship seasons, only in 1961-62 did they also win the MacNaughton Cup. In 1964-65 and 1974-75 they finished 2nd in the WCHA.

Re: Michigan Tech, best season in 30 years, part two!

As of now, there are only 5 seasons in Michigan Tech history where the team has had more wins they they have this year. 8 more wins ties this team for the most ever in school history.
