Miac 2010-2011

Re: Miac 2010-2011

Augsburg 2 at Concordia (MN) 5 MI I much better game for the Augsburg today.

St. Benedict 1 at Gustavus Adolphus 2 MI Great game for St. Ben's even though they were out shot by a large margin. To many penalties for Ben's and I'm sure that's why the shots were so high for Gustavus.

Re: Miac 2010-2011

Well decided to give the picking thing one more shot. I was wrong about 3 games last week.

Bold is the winner this week

Gustavus Adolphus at St. Catherine Sweep
Hamline at Augsburg Split
St. Olaf at Bethel Split
Saint Mary's at St. Thomas Split

Last week was sweep we this week is split week.

Re: Miac 2010-2011

This is the week where we may start to see the cream rise to the top... or will continue to see the parity that defines the MIAC this year.

GAC vs. St. Kates - GAC 3 points
Hamline vs. Augsburg - split
St. Olaf vs. Bethel - Olaf 3 points
SMU vs. UST - St. Thomas 3 points.

Standings after this weekend
GAC - 17 points
St. Thomas - 16 points
St. Olaf - 12 points
St. Mary's - 12 points
St. Catherine - 10 points
Bethel - 10 points
Concordia - 9 points
Hamline - 6 points
St. Bens - 5 points
Augsburg - 3 points

The Wild Wild MIAC
Here is the up to date standings. Next week I will try again and pick the teams along with their point as well like you did eg1351.
As I said before in this thread now we will see what teams are ready for a strong finish. At this point I think all the coach's are done moving players around as the did the first half. I'm not saying they won't tweak their team anymore but just not as much. The good teams always stand out this time of the year.

Gustavus Adolphus 15
St. Thomas 15
Saint Mary's 13
Bethel 12
St. Catherine 12
St. Olaf 10
Concordia 9
Hamline 6
St. Benedict 5
Augsburg 3

Thoughts anyone...What teams look strong

Re: Miac 2010-2011

It is tough to say which teams look strong because no team seems to put the same team on the ice each night.

The St. Kate's that beat GAC looked strong.
The Bethel that beat Olaf looked strong.
The GAC that tied Trinity and beat UST looked strong.
The St. Ben's that tied UST looked strong.
The St. Mary's that beat UST and took 3 points fron St. Kate's looked strong.
The Olaf that swept St. Kate's looked strong.
The St. Thomas that beat GAC looked strong.

on the other hand...
The St. Kate's of the last 3 months looked weak.
The Bethel that lost to St. Ben's looked weak.
The GAC that lost to St. Kate's, St. Thomas, and squeaked away with a 2-1 win over St. Ben's looked weak.
The St. Ben's of most weekends looks weak.
The St. Mary's that lost to Bethel and Olaf looked weak.
The Olaf that lost to Bethel looked weak.
The St. Thomas that tied St. Ben's looked weak.

I truly think the strong in this bunch are GAC, St Thomas, St. Kates, St. Mary's and St. Olaf... but that is only when they are playing their best hockey. As this season has shown, any team can beat them on any given night if they don't show up.

Re: Miac 2010-2011

If somehow St Thomas and Gustavus end up tied at the end of the season, who holds the tie breaker. They both have 1-0 wins over eachother, so that is moot...what is the next MIAC tiebreaker?

Re: Miac 2010-2011

Playoff Seeding Tie Breakers
(Based only on conference competition)
1. Results of head to head competition.
2. Results against all teams above those tied.
3. Results against all teams, beginning in rank order.
4. Head to head goal differential
5. Number of overtime losses.
6. Coin Toss.

So in this case it is tough to tell because we don't know who the 3rd place will be. GAC hasn't played SMU yet. UST hasn't played St. Kate's yet. These are the likely 3rd place. UST hasn't played Olaf or Bethel (GAC swept both) so even if they sneak in there we don't know yet.

Re: Miac 2010-2011

The strength of each teams Hockey Schedule will really in the next few weeks will determine the finish.

Gustavus I see getting 15 pts with their remaining games.
St. Thomas I see getting 10 pts with their remaining games.
St. Marys I see getting 11 pts with their remaining games.
Bethel I see getting 8 pts with their remaining games.
St. Kates I see getting 14 pts with their remaining games.
St. Olaf I see getting 9 pts with their remaining games.
Concordia I see getting 4 pts with their remaining games.

My prediction for the final standing are.......
Gustavus 30 pts
St. Thomas 25 pts
St. Kates 26 pts
St. Marys 24 pts
Bethel 20 pts
St. Olaf 19 pts
Concordia 13 pts

I know upsets will be coming from maybe Augsburg, St. Benedict and Hamline.

Thoughts? Just killing time until the NHL All Star game comes on.

Your point totals don't match up. Gustavus and St Thomas both have 15 points. If gustavus were to get 15, they would have 30, if St thomas 10, they would have 25...and so on. Do you have Gustavus tying St Marys?

I can't add today. I was watching the NHL draft that I taped yesterday. I made the corrections. I have Gustavus and St. Marys splitting when they meet.

Re: Miac 2010-2011

Can anyone tell me how many people count shots during a game? I watched a game this past weekend and counted shots. I have coached hockey and know what a real shot is. Incredible what I watched this weekend. So that is my question is it 1 person from the home team or what?

Re: Miac 2010-2011

It depends on where you are at, some teams have Sports Information staff members that count shots, and also those in the scorers booth. The official stats become those from the sports information department, as they are the ones reported for stats.

So the people in the sports information department are from the home teams? My guess is yea. I have watched so many games that a shot is taken and it's not wide and I look up at the shot board and it does not move. Not sure why that bugs me, I guess it's another stat that you take with a grain of salt.

Re: Miac 2010-2011

My picks of the week

Augsburg vs Saint Mary's 4 pts for St. Marys These 2 teams split last year.

Bethel vs St. Catherine 4 Pts for St. Kates St. Kates won both games last year.

Concordia (MN) vs Gustavus Adolphus 4 Pts for Gustavus Gustavus won both games last year.

Hamline vs St. Benedict 4 pts for St. Bens Hamline won the 1st game and they tied the second one last year.

St. Thomas vs St. Olaf Split These 2 teams split last year.

i thought this was a given? look how EVERY team in the MIAC and NCHA complains about GAC doing this.

I second these picks. Tough to argue against them. St. Kate's is coming off a big weekend and hopefully can use that momentum. However, Bethel had a big win against Olaf, which St. Kate's struggled against. Could get interesting but on paper St. Kate's should take both those games. Olaf will need to play as well as they did against Kate's to pull a game from St. Thomas, but I think it can happen.

Complains about GAC doing what? The shot clock on the scoreboard has NOTHING to do with what results are posted. GAC has 3 or 4 Sports Information people working home games to make sure the stats are done coorectly, I can't say that about many other programs.

I'm not saying anything about GAC. But it really does not matter if you have 3-4-5-6 people doing it, if they don't know what they are doing it does not matter. My guess is these people are paid what ever that go to the school for some $$$$. How much do they know about hockey ? Bottom line is I could do both ends and get it much closer than what I have scene. Not saying what school it was but it was very dreadful to watch as the visitor shot's never went up when the they should have. Like I said take it for whats its worth. If a team needs that extra to show I'm good that's cool.

Re: Miac 2010-2011

westeast, are you bothered by what appears on scoreboards, or what appears on-line for the reported results? Because they are usually quite different. I completely agree that the majority of the time the shots that appear on the scoreboard are incorrect.

Re: Miac 2010-2011

ultimately the number of shots really doesn't matter. It really doesn't dictate who is good and who is bad, as has been shown for many years by GAC. Yes they are good, but the number of shot they put up often didn't correlate with goals. They probably have one of the worst shooting percentages in the nation. I would rather play for a team that can score 2 goals on 15 shots than a team that scores 1 on 40.

Really the only people helped/hurt by poor shot counting are the goalies. Undercounting hurts their stats. Overcounting helps. So in reality, the statistic that should be taken with a grain of salt is SV%.
