Mercyhurst Lakers 2011/2012

Re: Mercyhurst Lakers 2011/2012

What the h*** does it accomplish by playing only the #1 goalie in exhibition games vs two high school teams, when the score is already lopsided?

It proves only 1) lack of class 2) development opportunity for players means nothing, personal ego gratification and winning at all costs is what counts 3) team chemistry is gonna take a back seat

Some people just don't get it. smh

What are you talking about Trillium???? They beat Stoney Creek 6-0 and used all three goalies and they beat Toronto 5-1 and used there starting goalie for the whole game. This is the third preseason game and they used all 3 goalies in the first 2 games. So what if they wanted to give there starter a full game to be game ready for the Quinnipiac series next weekend. She saw 1 shot in the first period of today's game. Hardly a good warmup for next weekends series. Do you have a daughter playing for Toronto or something?? sheesh!!

I really don't see an issue with the Mercy playing their sr goalie for a full 60 minutes. Not sure of the development opportunity you refer to.... team chemistry? Come on Trill....

I realize that Niagara is no Mercyhurst, but Niagara played their starter for a full 60 minutes vs Duram Lightning. Does that mean that the Niagara coaches want to win at all costs?

Also, PWHL teams are not high school teams.

Trill, get a grip.

PWHL teams are composed in virtually cases of players who are still in high school, generally a mix of 16 and 17 yr olds. The average age of players on these teams is therefore less than 17, competing against significantly older, stronger college-aged players. That's the point.

Facts:

1. Lakers have 15 players of PWHL age.
2. Lakers have 8 eighteen year olds; 2 of whom played in the PWHL just last year.
3. Visitors have 2 eighteen year olds including the lone goal scorer.
4. Visitors crushed D1 Colgate the day before by a score of 8-4.
5. Lakers not playing Canadian national selection camp attendee.
6. Laker scoring 1 goal and 3 assists played for the visitors just last season.

You send your team down to play US schools to see what the next level is like. A player would want that challenge. Do the Aeros hold back when they play other competition which they know is weaker/younger? I think as competitors those youngsters will turn that experience into something positive.

Lets review your facts

1. True but it is also true that while the PWHL age group does go up to 21 most of the teams have rosters that are predominatly high school aged players. Top players older than high school are playing D1, D3 or CIS
2. True but the rest of the team is older than 18
3. True but the rest of the team is younger my guess is there would be a 2 to 3 year gap in the average ages of the two teams which is significant.
4. True but unlike Mercyhurst Colgate used the game to give all their goalies time. Colgate actually won the first period 3-2 and then changed netminders.
5. True but apparently they did not need more help to handle a bunch of high school players.
6. True so appently she was motivated to play her old team. How dominante was she in the first two exhibition games. did the coach give her extra ice time on the Power play because she was playing her old team?

Re: Mercyhurst Lakers 2011/2012

Given the above complaints and spin doctors, D1 schools might want to consider dropping the scouting opportunity tours of Ontario PWHL clubs and simply play local boys midget AAA teams in pre-season.

Suspect there are NCAA rules not allowing this. Note that NCAA schools cannot play against club teams from the US, but they are allowed to play "International" games, hence some of the exhibition match-ups.

Believe that only applies to the extra 35th Exhibition game. Schools can play US teams, however it would count as a regular season contest and allow only an additional 33 games against NCAA foes, as opposed to the usual 34.

This has nothing whatsoever to do with the Aeros. The comments apply irrespective of the opponent, in any game in which the team has a sizeable lead. The nature of the criticism was not about the score or the impact on the losing team, but on the lack of opportunity given to some players on the winning team once the game was well in hand. I could care less if the Aeros lose, and contrary to your comment I have no personal vested interest in their record. Anyway, I believe sometimes it's actually good to lose, and even to lose big. Gives you things to work on. I also agree 100% if any team goes down to play competitive US schools, they shouldn't expect to do so to win.

The post was solely about Mercyhurst's actions in the circumstance. Comments were made last season about how they continued to play primarily the big guns beyond the point that the score was lopsided in games vs. Brown. That, and the fact that the transfer rate out of Mercyhurst is significantly higher than most programs over the past few years puts them under a microscope.

Possibly I misread a box score, or the box score was inaccurate which suggested only the #1 goalie played not only in a game vs the Aeros, but also versus Stoney Creek. If you were at the game, and saw each goalie actually played a period in that game, thats good.

I don't think it is unreasonable in the least to question why a team would play only one goalie in an exhibition against two teams filled with high-school aged players. I find it strange--and disturbing-- that anyone would defend the practice, in any games in which the score is no longer close. The reality in that in many programs, the #2 and #3 goalies will see little to no ice time. Giving them an opportunity to play in exhibition games now really costs the team nothing, and may help both the team and those individuals down the road in many ways...especially if the #1 becomes injured.

Look around at what most other teams are doing this time of year. BU, Clarkson, Quinnipiac, to name a few played all three goalies in their games this weekend.

You must not read box scores very well. Not only did all 3 goalies play in the first two exhibition games but the final score of the Aero's game was 5-1, and only 4-1 at one time. Hardly a sizable lead . And that isn't even why Hillary played the whole game. As I said before, Quinnipiac is coming into Erie next weekend for a war with Mercyhurst. Believe me, it is going to be a war. Qunni is looking for respect after earning 9th in the USCHO poll. They will be hoping to jump over them with a win or two.
I can't help but think this is over one Brown parent who was upset over the score last year when Brown came in to Erie and wouldn't let it go. Get over it!!!!

Re: Mercyhurst Lakers 2011/2012

Trill,

Your views and opinions regarding player opportunity are typical of a socialist. Not everyone gets a participation award and not everyone thinks like Don Cherry.

What's everyone's predictions for the games this weekend. Who will win and what will the score be. Does hurst have a chance of losing these games.

Do they have a chance of losing? Absolutely.

Like I said before, this is going to be a war. I am going with my homer pick and say Mercyhurst wins 3-1 both nights.

In the "Post-Agosta/Bendus/Scanzano" era, the key to success starts in the back and goes forward, IMO. How good will the goalies be with constant work? I think long periods of inactivity hurts Pattenden, so she should be able to get into a groove as she sees more shots than last year.

How quickly can the defense come together? The last defense before Agosta arrived was Pendleton/Lansing/Ayearst/Bonello. I don't think the current defensive core is of equal quality, yet. New faces/combinations will need time to learn to play together.

Finally, how defensive will the forwards be? Is Hurst going to return to the grinding-style of hockey Coach Sisti likes to play? Last year, Hurst scored 5.05 goals a game while giving up 2.00. In 05-06, they scored 3.34 a game while giving up only 1.68. I see Hurst scoring fewer goals. If they can't lower the goals against as well, we going to be a top 9-14 team, not a top 8 team.

I predict a win and a tie for Mercyhurst this weekend, team defense being the reason for the tie.

Re: Mercyhurst Lakers 2011/2012

Mercyhurst's 4-0 win over Quinnipiac was interesting. I thought the Bobcats played a stronger first period, but found themselves down 0-2 after a great singular effort by Baily Bram for a short-handed goal and a beautiful power-play goal setup by great passing that the goalie had no chance on. Mercyhurst was the stronger team in the last two periods, but not by much. In the third period, it wasn't until the last minute that Quinnipiac was able to get any decent shot attempts close to the net as the Lakers played great team defense. Mercyhurst has some things to work on, but it was nice to see Pattenden get a shutout.

Glad to hear about the great defensive effort and the play by Pattenden (sure glad she got some extra work last week). Keep it going today. No let down.

Pattenden shines in Lakers' opening win

Pattenden shines in Lakers' opening win

From staff reports, Erie Times-News

Hillary Pattenden had a perfect start to her season Friday night.

Mercyhurst College's senior goaltender stopped 20 shots on the way to her 11th career shutout in the Lakers' season-opening 4-0 win against Quinnipiac at Mercyhurst Ice Center.

Bailey Bram's short-handed goal 9 minutes, 44 seconds into the game was the only offensive support Pattenden needed in the battle of nationally ranked teams. Kelley Steadman and Christine Bestland had a goal and assist apiece for the eighth-ranked Lakers (1-0-0). Lauren Jones added a goal, while freshman Caroline Luczak and Wayne State transfer Gina Buquet recorded their first points with the Lakers.

Victoria Vigilanti made 30 saves for the No. 9 Bobcats (0-1-0). The teams meet again today at 4 p.m. at the MIC.

Re: Mercyhurst Lakers 2011/2012

Tough game for the Lakers, losing 1-0 Quinnipiac. Vigilanti played a solid game in net for the Bobcats, but Mercyhurst didn't generate the scoring chances like they did on Friday. Credit Quinnipiac for that. Mercyhurst applied the pressure in third, as it wasn't until at least halfway through third that Quinnipiac registered their first shot attempt (not shot, attempt) from inside the Hurst zone, the lone shot attempt up to that point being on a dump in on goal. Mercyhurst could just not put the puck by Vigilanti.

The star of the weekend for Mercyhurst was Pattenden. She stopped every shot that came her way from in front of the net. The loan goal scored by Quinnipiac came from behind and over the net and went in off Pattenden's back. I think it may have been one of those cases in which the puck was lying on the back of the net after a shot, and the teams just wacked at the net, causing it to fly up in the air. Ignoring the flukey goal, Pattenden was very solid, with great positioning.

Tough to see how the season will play out. The team has some things to work on, such as breakouts. But that is something that can be worked on in practice. Once the get those type of things sorted out, they can be a top 10 team, I think. They have the goal scorers and solid goaltending.
