Cornell played a perfect game and Denver was a hot mess
BU-Cornell should at least make for a good atmosphere Saturday afternoon
I expected Denver to be better than that, they lost all the battles on the Boards, soft shots, turnovers and just not ready to play until the 3rd period. Better team won both games, seem like BU CU will be a toss up, may the best goalie win.
Denver was puzzling. How do you not come to play when you are defending champions, and a #1 seed?
Cornell played well ... but I wouldn't be shocked if someday it surfaced that something was amiss in the DU camp. They treated the Cornell blue line like it was a rattlesnake - lots of dumb plays, poor shot selection, WAY too passive play overall, and the goalie was just so nonchalant on the second Cornell goal. Plus the Big Red owned the slots, at both ends. Cornell could/should have won 5-0, and I bet some of them are wondering afterwards "What just happened??" Half the DU team left the ice as if they just missed the PGA cut Friday afternoon, couldn't wait to get back on the plane home. Just ... weird ... I know, there's not enough money bet on college hockey to make it a thing, but I can't remember the last time my BS detector was on so strongly, right from the start. I doubt Cornell's goalie broke a sweat. Even the obligatory scrum with 3 seconds left at the end looked like the Pios were going through the motions - "See, we really DO care" etc. Nah - not buying.
I thought it was hilarious (and smart) for the Cornell fans to hold off on the "overrated" and "warm up the plane" chants until the very end, it's as if they had a hard time buying into this DU farce, too.
I was gonna write about how impressed I was with BU, until Denver underwhelmed me as much as they did.
I'll predict BU beats Cornell comfortably on Saturday night. Cornell will try to thump them, and maybe their goalie is so well rested from tonight that he'll have more in the tank for BU, but I doubt it. WIS says 5-2 Terriers.
Lol, what an absurd take. When one team plays really good defense, it makes the other team look bad. It doesn’t mean Denver didn’t care or had placed bets on Cornell. Ian Shane had to make a couple of great saves, especially the one with about 3:30 to go in the second period.Denver was puzzling. Perhaps 2015 NCAA title game?
LOL yeah, there was that golden moment Felgie ... I was down in Rhode Island on business week before last, and our mediator was a dyed-in-the-wool Providence guy. Mostly hoops (as always down there) but conversant on puck, too. He figured someone in the Patriarca family got to O'Connor. Why can't that stuff happen for us?!? ;-)

It’s one thing to argue that Denver played badly, and it’s a whole other thing to claim they didn’t care or had placed bets on Cornell. I won’t even begin to go into the myriad reasons why those claims are completely and utterly insane. By the way, Cornell totally shut down Harvard (15 draft picks, 6th in the Pairwise) last week in the ECAC semis until OT. Harvard’s offense looked very bad for the entirety of regulation. Didn’t mean Harvard had secretly gambled against themselves. Cornell just played great D. Tonight they were more aggressive on offense too.You don't have to like it, and you don't have to agree with me. I've been complimentary to Cornell - they came to play, could/should have won by more ... but jeez, did Denver look like the #1 seed to you tonight?? How many quality shots did Denver muster, one? Two?? You think this was the first time DU has faced a "really good defense"?
There was one moment somewhere midway or late in the second period, when a DU defenseman clearly could have handled the puck on the line, but watched it trickle an inch or two over the line and out before he brought it back in. Again, weird. Lots of other similar situations where the obvious play doesn't get made. The 2nd Cornell goal ... *** is the DU goalie doing, standing and looking at the loose puck behind his net?? I don't think that's how they teach proper goalie mechanics in a situation like that ... talk about gift-wrapped with a bow ...
Linked below is a 15 minute highlight package ... the only DU guy who stands out even a little bit to me is Mazur, and his best chance arguably is his first one, in the first minute of the game. Then there's that save Shane made late in the second (puck landed on the top of a guy's head and he was taken away bleeding before returning, a few rows below me) ... and ... and ... nothing. Zero zip nada.
Funniest thing about the highlights - 15 minutes' worth and you'd never know Cornell missed a penalty shot too.
Anyway, good luck with BU. I didn't have a dog in either fight tonight, or on Saturday night either. One thing I can rock solid guarantee you is, BU won't be sleepwalking through most of the game like DU did ...
They did. They were also shut out as a one seed in their last game to seven seed Colorado College in the NCHC semis six days ago. It’s one thing to argue that Denver played badly, and it’s a whole other thing to claim they didn’t care or had placed bets on Cornell. Giving it the eye test, not unreasonable. Also, local news reported 3500 at 5:35 this evening.Anyone who was there: How many people do you actually think were in attendance? Official number is 3631, but judging from what I can see on the Cornell/Denver highlights, the place looks almost empty.
some observations from today's games. I think BU looked like the sharpest team of these first 4 games. Probably Cornell 2nd. MN and St. Cloud found their games late, but play was pretty inconsistent. Congrats to any Cornell fans, nice to see us turn the page from Denver for at least a year. Cornell is going to have to come up with something even more amazing Saturday because BU looks very dangerous.

BU did look awfully good, but how good was WMU? Not very good. Let's remember the meeting earlier this season...last second heroics carry the Terriers in what was a very entertaining game. Cornell was sick and injured during that part of the season, and it was still a great battle. So, we've beaten QU (4-0), UConn when they were a top 5 (fools gold) (6-0), and Denver (2-0). Anyone see a pattern here? I think it's going to be a great game Saturday and good luck to BU.
