We could have held a seance during the NU/WMU game last year in Worcester. It was a noon game, and the lack of support was embarrassing. I get it, its noon on a Friday, and there are classes, getting out there, bla bla. But it was awful compared to the late afternoon UMass/Minny game which was about 80% full.

Yeah, Ok, sure. But UMass and Minny are HUGE state schools with a large fanbase. My guess is WMU fans are not going to make a long trip twice, so they would have most likely waited to see if they got to the FF. Remember, the FF was in Boston...so they're not going to go there TWICE in three weeks (the week off in between doesn't help but that's another discussion).

But I'm not sure what your point is. If it's that a Noon start is ridiculous, then it's not "embarrassing" for all the reasons we have discussed. It's just not worth it when you could have waited a day and attended the finals on a Saturday and saved a trip (for the local people).

Well that is what makes it even more stupid. They stagger the games for TV slots - but if I can't take the day / pull kids from school to see the game in person, I'm definitely not going to be watching it on live TV.

Yes. I think most of us are in agreement. Unfortunately, it's just not an important sport. It is to US, but how many of us would be upset if the NCAA water polo championships were held on a Wednesday at Noon? (and don't laugh...that might anger some people but that's about the significance that hockey has to non-hockey fans - it just simply doesn't have broad-based appeal, despite how passionate we are in our "bubble"). That's why I said I'm glad the games are even on, because years ago they weren't. I mean, we complain about this EVERY year. It's NOT going to change. If the phrase "They don't care" offends anyone, then I'll put it more mildly: "It just isn't that IMPORTANT in the overall scheme of things to them."

And I have heard some people say "But the NHL is in Texas, Tennessee, Florida, Arizona and California." Great. That's the NHL. That has NO bearing on the NATIONWIDE appeal (or lack therefore) of COLLEGE hockey. We just have to accept that for now. Maybe it will change someday (and maybe I'll win the lottery too...)

I think we are in agreement - and that is really my point. Almost nobody is going to watch this on TV - and even moreso at 2:00 PM. So, for most of us, it would be better to not have it on TV at all, and have the game at a normal time where we can actually attend in person.

Attendance, actual people in seats, could be laughable on Saturday if it is a Western/Denver final. Late afternoon on Saturday, but still. I am curious if either day will have more fans than last year’s NHIAA finals which was three games on a Saturday morning/afternoon. I doubt it. To be fair admission was $10.

I'm willing to find out.

Western Michigan may be the worst team I've ever seen in the NCAA tournament. We had the ACHA championships in Marlboro this week and WMU doesn't look much better than some of those teams.

I posted in the BU thread. Maybe the worst defensive teams i have seen all year. Any number of HE teams would put up a better game.

Watching this on TV, only one team brought their game today. It also shows that Western hasn't played with confidence since Denver came to town and waxed them twice. This dirty 3rd period shows WMU doesn't have what it takes mentally.

Honestly about what I expected. Not a wasteland but could be better if not for the awful start time.

On TV it looks as if the lower bowl is maybe 1/3 full - hard to tell though as the predominant camera lines could be a Denver section or something like that.

Congrats BU, good luck going forward. BU took advantage of defensive lapses after the dissallowed goal.

I'll say this...I get a little tired of hearing Starman say EVERY game how great the NCHC is and how it's the best league. It may have the best TEAM, but I think Hockey East is a little deeper top to bottom. Regardless, it's not like it's indisputable. As for today, BU played under control (as I mentioned on the BU thread). They were disciplined and didn't allow WMU back in the game once they had the lead. They dumped it in and stayed back, avoiding getting caught in odd-man rush situations or with guys up ice. WMU missed a couple of golden chances, but so did we, specifically the 2 on nothing (don't know how they missed that). I think one reason that WMU looked "bad" was their obstinance in not abandoing the two-man forecheck, which BU easily broke all game. They were "bad" defensively because they were constantly outmanned by allowing BU to break out quickly or with stretch passes. It will not be as easy against Denver (or Cornell, for that matter, as they are a "clog it up" team which gives BU trouble). And that's another thing to keep in mind. WMU is a free-wheeling team, and that style of play gives up a lot of chances which is not a good post-season style. So I'm reserving judgment. But hopefully we can sneak out a win Saturday and move on to Tampa.
