Re: Maine offseason part II...Countdown to slightly above the Mendoza line.

He may have been recruited by Grant, but he never had much of a chance to develop under him. Still, he looked the best tonight.
He had two years with Grant and showed no improvement to speak of. As far as today goes he gave up two really bad goals glove side and saw quite a few less shots than Darling or Sirman.

When I look at a goalie coming in, I try to look back a bit in their develoopment to see what they did for a few years. Sirmain did ok for the team he was on before last year. He put up some ok numbers, but wound up leaving for whatever reason. Last year he was on a pretty good team. They beat the teams that were below them in the regular season. When they got to the playoffs and started playing some tough competition, he did not do so well.
Sirman had a .926 sv% which is very good in most leagues, but it is outstanding in the OJHL considering that is an offensive league. When they got to the playoffs he was 19-6 with a .932 and they won the OJHL title and you're saying he didn't play well? He didn't play that well in the royal bank cup after the league playoffs, but that tends to happen when you face 50+ shots a game.

I agree with you 100% with Wilson, he has looked awful from day one. I think Ray Jean was probably a better goalie than him. I think Darling is our best hope this year, up until the disaster in OT at NU he was great. Hopefully he can get back to that level this year.

I think most of the comments have been encouraging on the rest of the team. I really am optimistic about this year. I think a lot of people on here are giving the other teams in hockey east way too much credit.

Re: Maine offseason part II...Countdown to slightly above the Mendoza line.

I think that I saw Grant scribbling something like......"TIMMAY is toast".......;)

Re: Maine offseason part II...Countdown to slightly above the Mendoza line.

I think Wilson will be the number one goalie. !

If that's the case,Maine is in serious trouble. He's certainly had a few good games in his career, but he's nobody's #1 goalie at the D-1 level, from what I've seen.

Re: Maine offseason part II...Countdown to slightly above the Mendoza line.

I'll think you'll see Wilson and Darling playing in goal to start. Before Wilson got hurt last season he was their best goalie and somehow Darling looked great against BU in the playoffs. I think in the end if Maine is going to be successful Darling has to win the job but we'll see. Like to see them platoon for awhile, keep them competing and rested, until their is clear favorite.

One other thing, if attendance at the Blue White is an indicator, is there any wonder the ticket office is running non stop advertising about hockey tickets. Back in the day their'd be more people at a midnight practice

If only it was so easy to look at before Maine stats and have a sense of how good a goalie will be at the D-1 level. Here's a prime example of why you can't always bank on those stats: Dave Wilson's before Maine info:

BEFORE MAINE: Played for the Brampton Capitals and Streetsville Derbys... He played in 41 games with a 2.91 goals against average and a .919 save percentage as he posted a 21-15-5 record... Named Top Goaltender and Most Valuable Player of the 2005-06 Royal Bank Cup Canadian Junior Hockey Championships... Played for Humberview High School, posting a 1.18 goals against average and a .952 save percentage with four shutouts... Also played for the Port Hope Predators in 2001-02 and was the team MVP... Played basketball at Humberview High School as well.

He knows all about Wilson, you're preaching to the choir here.

The two guys from Slovakia are walk-ons. Diamond is an impact player and Mangene and Shemansky will contribute. Nemec, and deKasstrozza played like they are trying to win a position. Darling will probably rotate with Wilson until one outplays the other and hopefully that will be sooner than later.

Naked Five was last seen at Pat's in the Red Room sleeping on the floor.:D

Re: Maine offseason part II...Countdown to slightly above the Mendoza line.

Anybody making the trip to Union this weekend? I have heard that there are at least a few fans heading out this way. Only about 3 hours for me from Rochester which is much better than the 11 hours to Orono! Hope to see a lot of familiar faces as we start the season!

GO BLUE!

Agreed. They will tandem until one or the other stands out. I have a feeling neither one will so look for the rotation all season barring an injury.

nnnnooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

acs is right, it's in the blood. I'm not going to be able to quit Maine hockey cold turkey.

But the style of hockey that I used to enjoy watching left town a while ago. Andthis summer, my optimism finally followed suit. I have no expectations for this team. If they do better than last year, I guess it's a step forward.

I'll leave the hope and optimism to you guys. :p

I am forwarding this e-mail to the White House. I think it is "fishy". I, like the President, am full of optomism. The guys are in shape, they are more talented, and right now, Maine is tied for 1st in Hockey Eat.

Lets go Bears!

And you know why? The current dope in charge got rid of the speed and the excitement that went with it....thus killing the atmosphere in Alfond. He got rid of the finishers, he got rid of run-em-out-of-the-rink-in-the-first-10 minute hawkey, he got rid of the electricity that that style generated and Alfond was famous for, he got rid of puck control all over the ice hawkey, he got rid of solid goaltending you could count on, he got rid of defensemen who could start the puck up ice without coughing it up....................in short, he has destroyed what you and I and some others on this board witnessed for many, many years at Alfond.

I'm not even talking about the late 80s, early 90s years. Things change, and that era is gone. The whole game has sort of changed since then.

But even as recently as 2000, Maine was a lot of fun to watch. They might not have carried play the entire game. In fact, I remember a hockey east playoff game against BU where the ratdogs were forechecking like bastids. But Yeats held the fort down, Maine cleared, and within the blink of an eye, the Bears had a 3-on-1 going the other way. Marty K takes the puck deep on the right side, flips it back to Metcalf, who leaves a drop pass for Chris Heisten . . . .

I don't think I realized how good those years were when they were happening. I guess I was spoiled by the Kariyas, Pellerins, Jean Yves Roys from that earlier time. Forget 42-1-2. I'd kill for a return to the days when Maine had great goaltending and could kill you in transition.

Hockey like that still goes on these days but -- and it kills me to say this -- you have to go to Newton to see it.
