Re: Maine offseason part II...Countdown to slightly above the Mendoza line.

Randa cause alot of turnovers at the blue line and on a stick going the other way for more than one scoring chance.

It was because he was so slow he was out of place.;)

Re: Maine offseason part II...Countdown to slightly above the Mendoza line.

Yup, I went. Didn't even stay for the shoot out. Watched Willy and Darlling give up 4 goals each and the new kid gave up 7-he stinks! Actually, Willy and Scotty didn't do so hot either, but in light of Sirman's performance, they stand a bit taller!

Seeley was on the bench, but didn't play. I wondered why Whitehead kept him on this year. Now I can see why. I think there were comments last year when he gave up 2 or 3 goals in the blue/white game that he and Wilson were stinkin'.

So, was anyone else as impressed (not) with the goaltending as I was?

Can't wait to hear how the shootout went. Hopefully, better than the game.

good thing they got rid of Standbrook, I don't think he was much of a goalie coach.... probably would not have been able to work with the boys on the little things... better to have someone come in a couple days a week, who has a better track record than 'ole Grant

Re: Maine offseason part II...Countdown to slightly above the Mendoza line.

The Blue/White game is a scrimmage and no defense is played so it's tough to judge a goalie on that. I thought all three gave up some crappy goals and all three made some good saves. I wouldn't lose any sleep over it unless it's the same in REAL games which I doubt it will be.

You will be happy to know that I thought the exact same thing. Patrick Roy often looked pretty bad in NHL All-Star games, where there is NO D.

Re: Maine offseason part II...Countdown to slightly above the Mendoza line.

Shemansky and Diamond teamed up for a goal. These kids should be fun to watch. Nyquist was invisible in today's game. There were lots of goals scored but I don't think it was all on the goal tending. I didn't think there was much defense being played in front of them. Darling was giving up rebounds and Sirman didn't seem to be focused. It was obvious to me that players were playing for jobs. There were some hard hits and the officials were breaking up confrontations after the whistle occasionally. I had no idea who 18 and 15 were. For a moment I thought Orsini was back.:D

Re: Maine offseason part II...Countdown to slightly above the Mendoza line.

Stanbrook was at the game today. Poticny lead his team in scoring with 84 points and Randa lead the D in scoring with34 points.

I don't think that Sirman is a goalie that Grant would have recruited. My opinion-what a waste of money. I hope I'm wrong. I'd love for him to prove me wrong! From what I've heard, the guys on the team don't think he's very good either.

I don't know if we'll ever see another recruiter like Grant. He had an eye for goalies without a doubt. I've been around a few times when he's been skating and stop to give goalies on the ice a few pointers. He has a great eye and can give a good lesson is two minutes. I can't imagine how someone who is here maybe once a week can help out goalies develop-even a good goalie needs to develop more.

We'll miss Grant forever, but... He's gone and what do we do?

I think Wilson will be the number one goalie. He looked the best tonight. I can understand the comment that this game doesn't give us a good picture of the goalies, but what I saw tonight isn't good for even a bad picture. I've been watching goalies at Maine for a long time. The Standbrook era is definitelly gone!

Good thing your opinion does'nt matter. He was ranked the #2 goalie coming into college by Inside college hockey. I'll take there opinion over your for now. The team has not even played and guys are dumpping on them, give the players and team a chance before you kick them around. It's a new year.

Like I said, I hope he proves me wrong. He may have been ranked, but he didn't have many opportunities coming his way. There might be a reason for that.

You certainly don't have to share in my opinions, but I do have them. People often share their opinions here. I love to hear the comebacks, even when people don't agree with me. I'm not basing my comments only on tonight, but you know everyone is competing for a spot, including the goalies. I think this game is a good place to start in figuring out who we'll see.

Regardless, my opinion only counts for me, just as yours only counts for you. I thinkk we can all agree on that.

He was more than just at the game. He stood watching and taking notes at the far end.

Darling and Sirman didn't have a lot of defense in front of them.

Re: Maine offseason part II...Countdown to slightly above the Mendoza line.

Definitely agree.

If they finish 7th, it'll be a good year. Maybe if Purcell and Sweetland and Bishop hadn't left early...

yeah and if the Kariyas had never graduated, and if Walsh was still alive.. im tired of Whitehead's and everyone's excuses. Maine has good players, now if only they had a good coach they would be a GOOD team

ironically, their team had Dimmen and O'Neill...

Really? He recruited Wilson who has pretty much sucked for three years minus a few games here and there definitely not your typical Maine goalie. You might be right Sirman could be a complete sieve, but I have a hard time coming to that conclusion after watching him in a scrimmage.

That was the point of his eyeroll. We're all sick of it, too.

Re: Maine offseason part II...Countdown to slightly above the Mendoza line.

Scouting for Jerry, Dick and Jack? :p

That was the first thing that crossed my mind. :p But then I doubt any of them really worry about Maine anymore.

I didn't notice O'Neill much but Dimmen liked to pass to the white team and Pryor got schooled a few times. Cornell looked good.

Maybe that's what he wrote down.

He may have been recruited by Grant, but he never had much of a chance to develop under him. Still, he looked the best tonight.

When I look at a goalie coming in, I try to look back a bit in their develoopment to see what they did for a few years. Sirmain did ok for the team he was on before last year. He put up some ok numbers, but wound up leaving for whatever reason. Last year he was on a pretty good team. They beat the teams that were below them in the regular season. When they got to the playoffs and started playing some tough competition, he did not do so well.

What I saw from his history is that he can help his team win games they should win. He struggled against teams that were as good or better. If Maine is a 4th or 5th place team then this kid may be able to win against the teams below us, but could likely give up a number of goals against the top 4 or 5 teams. We need to beat those teams to get where we want to go.

I was disappointed tonight after all the hype about the new kid. Maybe being disappointed is premature, but there anyway. Since most everyone feels we need a goalie who can help carry the team even when the team in not performing at the top of the game, I was left feeling like there's a lot of room for doubt.

Since I love Maine Hockey, I'll save my harsher opinions and hope that things will be better this year. We'll see soon enough.
