Re: Maine Black Bears 2010-2011 - Part Deux

Your point is well taken, although I think you may have grabbed the wrong set of numbers.

MC is 5-1-1 at home, 7-3-3 on the road 12-4-4 altogether.

In the league, they're 6-4-3 altogether, 4-1-1 at home, and 2-3-2 on the road. Not a huge difference, but significant, admittedly.

As to how much something like that matters tourney time, either for Maine or Merrimack, I suppose it matters whether the opponent is a team that consider the Garden their second home or not, as those games are played at a neutral site; whether the advantage of being at home is your own rink and your own home crowd, or just the absence of same for the team you're playing. For Merrimack, every other school is at least twice as large in terms of student body, so they're all capable of bringing more fans to whatever the site is. In years when the team was really bad, the Boston clubs, UNH and Maine routinely brought larger groups of fans than the Warriors had in their own building, to say nothing of tournament sites.

I was looking at #s from this year and last year in the same 5 minutes and I think I managed to confuse myself. Thanks for the correction. haha.

I remember the crazy parity they had last year -- and I remember it was looking like more of the same out of the gate. Looking at the RIGHT stat sheet now, I see they started 0-2-3 in the road category.

However, looking at this correction...it makes me wonder more:

If Mack is 10-2-0 in their last 12 including a 7-1 slaughter of Maine; better overall win%; better road #s; higher goals/game; best GA average in the league; better special teams #s...

What is the justification for keeping Maine ahead of Mack in the polls?!?!

I clearly agree that this team has had some serious issues winning away games. I just think the complaining should be put on hold until their next blown road game.

right... because we have not seen 10 years of the same.
we should all assume that "this team has turned the corner" after the most recent win.

the contract talks were put on hold after Maine finished tied for second in the league last year. (just barely over .500, and 2 losses out of ninth place and out of the playoffs)

this is like arguing politics... "the politician promised that he would do things differently, I am going to vote for him and believe him and give him a chance"... because I have the world's shortest memory.

Polls are nothing but a beauty contest. The selection committee uses the RPI in March for the NCAA tourney positions. Currently Maine is ranked 11, Merrimack 14 and upcoming opponent Northeastern comes in at 43. Wins over UND and BC gave the Bears a huge boost.

Re: Maine Black Bears 2010-2011 - Part Deux

Sully being hurt sucks, I see him as the best goalie on the team not sure why he hasn't played lately if he just hurt his knee

The goal tending situation is just a bit unusual. Maine had three last year in Darling, Sirman and Wilson. Because Darling left school and Wilson graduated, we have three again this year. All three are good goal tenders but no one has taken control of the starting position and proven themselves as the go to stopper. I agree that Sullivan probably has the edge right now but Sirman could finally be ready after a shaky first year. Not really in the Maine tradition to have three goal tenders but it's nice to have that luxury. It also forces all of them to compete and develop.

Re: Maine Black Bears 2010-2011 - Part Deux

So you were OK with me complaining all last week after their latest road disaster, but since they won at home (though our road woes have not changed) they've been redeemed until further notice? I'm coming across like a dick, i realize this, and have been for a few weeks now, but I'm really not trying to in this case...just trying to wrap my head around this.

Okay Howitz-ah, I understand you're frustration, we have been doing this for several days, I retract my statements about your attitude towards this team.

Supposedly, they changed the Pairwise. At least according to the other Web site. And as a result, today at least, we're screwwwwwwwed.

http://www.collegehockeynews.com/news/2011/01/18_committee_tweaks_pairwise.php

Add and aside: This is absurdly frustrating to me. The USCHO Pairwise say one thing: http://www.uscho.com/rankings/pairwise-rankings/d-i-men/
The CHN say something else: http://www.collegehockeynews.com/ratings/ncaapwcr.php

Now I know its a tool that's supposed to be used really only at the end of the season, but the whole point of the stinkin thing is to make the system transparent and "simple math." When there's dispute about the forumla, neither is true. Argh.

CHN got the story first and adjusted their model to adjust for this newly announced change. USCHO will probably make the change shortly and things will match up.

Not really a fan of this change to be honest... but... it is what it is. I'm not worried.

Agreed, but why is it a story to begin with? And in January? If the ultimate goal of the PWR, and I know the committee doesn't actually acknowledge it exists and what not, but if the point is transparency and no smoke and mirrors then why not just announce it to everyone BEFORE the season? Why January and why a scoop for Wodon? Makes no sense.

haha. Look, I know I've won the honor of douch*ebag poster of the month, I accept that. But you know, someone had to pick up Hokydads slack ;) But just think about it: if I didn't think this team was capable of doing great things, I wouldn't have been so upset.

I don't see many Pittsburgh Pirates fans going on unreasonable tirades because they are what they are.
