Re: Maine Black Bears 2010-2011 - Part Deux

congrats to maine. that was as thorough of a butt kicking i have seen BC take in many many years. offensively, defensively, goaltending, power play, short hand, transition game, physical game - maine was far and away the better team in every facet.
What he said. The Bears were on us like stink on poo.

Apparently the return of Dimmen and O'Neil make a significant difference. They weren't on the ice at Conte.

Sunday was a bad day to be a fan from Boston. Then Monday morning, it's 5º outside at 11:00 am. Holy chit! :D

Re: Maine Black Bears 2010-2011 - Part Deux

If Sullivan isn't ready, I agree with you. Tim will go with the hot hand in Sirman.
I'd be surprised if they didn't go with Sirman even if Sully was ready. The kid played well in net on Sunday and stoned BC on a number of good chances early on and for a good stretch in the third. After BC got the goal, I thought we had a chance, but Sirman shut the door the rest of the way.

Re: Maine Black Bears 2010-2011 - Part Deux

BTW... who's the knuckle head that's at the very back of Section II, calling every penalty and infraction against the team that's not Maine? Holy Christmas... don't mind the commentary, but that guy doesn't have a clue. Dude, it ain't 'inteference' when the guy that just got hit is carrying the puck... was it a penalty? Probably, but it was a hook, not interference. And... the defensive team CAN hand pass to a teammate in the defensive zone. Christmas... he yelled at Benedetto for 20 minutes after that non call. Learn the rules. :D

Re: Maine Black Bears 2010-2011 - Part Deux

I expect big things from Flynn and Dimmen. I like to see the guys who don't figure into the score sheet to get credit for what they did. I really like Swavely, he does the little stuff like Mangene does. Really in this game I could have named anyone. It was the most complete game I've seen them play in awhile. I'm hoping that trend continues

A player a lot of people might not have noticed was Andersson who was huge on the PK and at one time was entertaining 3 BC players while the penalty clock was ticking down 6 or 7 seconds.

Re: Maine Black Bears 2010-2011 - Part Deux

From the sound of it, the effort was there on Friday, too. It's just that the goaltending was crap.

The team last night looked light years better than the one that played Friday. As I said then, they weren't horrible, but they weren't great either. Last night they had jump in their skates, and were merciless pests all over the ice. Providence wouldn't have even been in that game if Maiine had played like this against them.

Like others said, why is effort and intensity like this missing so often from this team? They play like that, they can beat anyone. And Sirman was great, no doubt whatsoever his best game in a Maine uniform.

Re: Maine Black Bears 2010-2011 - Part Deux

Benedetto deserves it no matter what
Normally I'd agree. But the refs were pretty good last night.
The AR though, Aughe, he's lost. Saw him on TV for the BU/Harvard game this weekend also. Has a rough time with offsides and icing calls (both games). Last night, there were 2 or 3 touches (one I actually could hear) that were called icing, and then another that went the length of the ice on a 3-line pass that no one even came close to touching, and he let it go. Maybe he just had a bad weekend.

Had no affect on the outcome of the game... just sayin'... this guy was pretty bad. ;)
Maybe that's his brother that stands behind Section II. :D

You sir, are a gentleman.:) You forgot one facet. The penalty shot.:D

indeed. i also forgot to mention passing.

what was up with mangene hissy fit on that penalty shot? did he not know the rules? because he clearly covered the puck in the crease; he didn't even try to shove it under sirman.

He was probably surprised Bennedetto had good enough vision to see what he did!!:D:eek:

The RIGHT call on that play...Penalty Shot period...whom ever it was awarded to BC or Maine.

Benny was hanging right over the net, and he definitely put his reading glasses on.
There's no substitute for experience. :D

ha. i swear i didnt see York's comments before i made mine, but apparently he saw the same game i did

“Maine was better than we were in every facet of the game,” Eagles coach Jerry York said. “Defensive zone they were better, neutral zone they were better, offensive zone they were better, any special team situation they were better. They clearly deserved to win the game. We were fortunate to keep it 4–1.”

Re: Maine Black Bears 2010-2011 - Part Deux

This weekend goes to show pretty much what the season has been from the get-go....inconsistant....good to get two wins....but need to string together a winning/unbeaten streak...goaltending will be key from here on in...more or less it will come down to playing the hot man and riding him for as long as it takes...but what scares me the most is WHY they can't string together consistant play game in and game out for 60 minutes....not trying to be negative...just reflecting on whats black & white.

Re: Maine Black Bears 2010-2011 - Part Deux

Right, because what you said is all that matters.
They haven't had an opportunity to win an away game in the last week, only home games.

What does this even mean? You're trying to be insulting but you're saying the same thing.

First of all, that was said when our most recent result was a road game. How'd we do?

It doesn't shock me that they won because we're nearly perfect at home. But this team is being written down as 'significant'. I said: even if they win...and even if they win big....until that same team shows up on the road, we're really not a 'force'; just an excellent home team. Very similar to Merrimack. They're 8-1-1 at home, 2-4-2 on the road. How far do you think that inability to win away from Lawler will take them in the postseason?

I wasn't feeling great about Friday because winning at home is really all we've got going for us at the moment, and we nearly choked on that to a below average team...

We have 7 road games left, but 5 of them are to UMass, UMass Lowell and Northeastern. They have one test that will truly test what this team is made of and that is our weekend at the Whit. If they walk away without a single point, my faith will be pretty slim come March.

I clearly agree that this team has had some serious issues winning away games. I just think the complaining should be put on hold until their next blown road game.

Re: Maine Black Bears 2010-2011 - Part Deux

I recorded the game last night while at the game and watched it today. The CBS College Sports production crew and announcers did a wonderful job of promoting the Alfond Arena. They repeatedly credited the Alfond Arena as probably the best venue for Division 1 college hockey in America. Video clips of students waiting in line and the Hall of fame in the lobby, Naked Five, student section, band, etc. They also encouraged all hockey fans to visit the Alfond at least once in their life time for a unique and exciting college hockey experience. Special thanks go to them for promoting UMaine hockey in such a complimentary fashion to a national audience.

So you were OK with me complaining all last week after their latest road disaster, but since they won at home (though our road woes have not changed) they've been redeemed until further notice? I'm coming across like a dick, i realize this, and have been for a few weeks now, but I'm really not trying to in this case...just trying to wrap my head around this.

Yeah,The Warden and I both marveled at how the old barn was being transformed from an impediment to bringing in blue-chippers into a recruiting tool.(Probably didn't hurt that Starman coached Joey Diamond back in juniors, but I'll take it!)

Your point is well taken, although I think you may have grabbed the wrong set of numbers.

MC is 5-1-1 at home, 7-3-3 on the road 12-4-4 altogether.

In the league, they're 6-4-3 altogether, 4-1-1 at home, and 2-3-2 on the road. Not a huge difference, but significant, admittedly.

As to how much something like that matters tourney time, either for Maine or Merrimack, I suppose it matters whether the opponent is a team that consider the Garden their second home or not, as those games are played at a neutral site; whether the advantage of being at home is your own rink and your own home crowd, or just the absence of same for the team you're playing. For Merrimack, every other school is at least twice as large in terms of student body, so they're all capable of bringing more fans to whatever the site is. In years when the team was really bad, the Boston clubs, UNH and Maine routinely brought larger groups of fans than the Warriors had in their own building, to say nothing of tournament sites.
