Maine Black Bears 2010-2011 - Part Deux

Re: Maine Black Bears 2010-2011 - Part Deux

The team doesn't looked incredibly clean technically, but they definitely look different tonight. More heart, more grit, more energy, more aggression, better hockey all around. They aren't playing their normal apathetic, lazy, timid game, I guess we'll see what happens in the third. But they are certainly dominating BC. Sirman looks considerably more stable and confident in net than he has in the past, lets hope he can get the shutout.

It was the backchecking. Total tenacity from all sides on the BC puckcarriers that put BC in a very difficult position to do anything offensively. They poked in a few goals in what was an even game early on but the tenacity was a huge difference. They made BC's PP look fairly terrible tonight as well.

Congrats to Maine. I saw this coming from a mile away (especially with the fire timmay stuff in full force all week) but didn't see it happening how it unfolded tonight. Game was over 21 minutes into the game.

I look forward to seeing the "Maine is back" headlines again.

Re: Maine Black Bears 2010-2011 - Part Deux

Sirman deserved the first star but the whole team played like they were possessed. Where has that Tanner House been anyway? I thought Swavely, Mangene and Van Dyk were excellent tonight. Great win, need to play like that every game.

I agree, Swavely was awesome. I look forward to a few more years of watching him. Great on the PK.

Passed the look test tonight. Nothing fortunate about it and played as well in all 3 zones as they have all year. Goaltending helps...who knew? Anyways the question is still why is the effort there some nights and not others? Leadership, behind the bench and in the room. Show me you can do it night after night, weekend after the weekend. The true mark of excellence is consistency. Do it again next weekend. Still feels **** good to have a reason to believe.

Re: Maine Black Bears 2010-2011 - Part Deux

This was a total team effort. Outstanding performance. Maine gave BC no "time and space" and because of it BC was continually turning the puck over in their defensive zone. A little surprised York didn't pull the goal tender. I guess he realized this wasn't going to be BC's night. Maine's first win against BC in 8 games. Great performance for the national audience. Anyone know if there were any recruits there for this one?

Re: Maine Black Bears 2010-2011 - Part Deux

Great to see them play so well tonight, but why don't they even resemble this team on so many others nights? The Alfond was loud like old times and the Bears were beating BC to loose pucks all night and for several fairly extended periods of even strength play it looked like Maine was on the power play. Even thought SOG were pretty even, the game wasn't as close as the score indicates. If they can dominate BC so thoroughly, how could this same team get trounced by Merrimack? Really impressed by Mangene and Flynn and Beattie, but everybody looked good tonight and they kept playing with intensity right to the end of the 3rd period. Now, if they'd just get themselves in the habit of putting in this kind of effort every single time they play and make it into the NCAA's, they could win some games.

Re: Maine Black Bears 2010-2011 - Part Deux

You will, and then you'll see the ever so popular "Maine is a fraud" comments if they lose next weekend.

Well, they were at home. I said "they can win 10-0 and it proves nothing"

We can win at home, even against good teams.

One regulation win away from home this year.....

Even if these wins propel them to postseason play, if they can't win away from Orono, it's all pointless. Win TWO effing games away from Orono and then we might talk about bigger things. ONE, just ONE against a good team. Our regulation win is against Providence..woohoo....and we have two OT wins against unranked Vermont and Cornell. The only games worth MENTIONING that we've won have been at home. Great...we're merrimack from last year!

But again: who was that ***-hole who has been calling for Sirman getting another look anyway? What an anti-Maine philosophy ******* that guy is. Sirman got 4 looks and never lost this year....he's a bum....scrape him to the side.....lets keep playing our defenseman at forward, our forwards at defense, and let our best goalie ride pine.....yea! that seems to be working!!!!

Wait, wait? Was Cornell on D? Was Mangene at forward? was Sirman playing??? FRIK!!!! That's a losing formula right there....NO WONDER WE LOST TONIGHT!!!!!!......

From the sound of it, the effort was there on Friday, too. It's just that the goaltending was crap.

There doesn't seem to be much mystery about the team's inconsistency. They've been very good at home, minus the end of the UNH game. They haven't demonstrated that they can show up for games away from Alfond with any kind of consistency.

If they're lucky, they'll finish 4th and get to host a 5th place team in the hockey east quarters that's ranked high enough to give them a bit of a pairwise boost.

Maybe that way they can scratch their way into the NCAAs and, if we're lucky, once they reach the NCAAs each game will be a crap shoot.

BC showed up,but pretty much just for the first 8 minutes of the first...

Still, this was a great win for Maine. The Bears played close to a perfect game, and made an elite team look ordinary. No way in the world did I see this coming.(I didn't even get PO'ed at Banwell tonight!)

I hope that the ship is righted, but who knows?

This Maine team is the most talented we've seen in years. If they play balls-out every night, they should be fine.

While you're right....it's depressing that you're right, and it goes hand in hand with much of what I've been saying.

I'm tired of crossing my fingers over technicalities, lucky breaks, lucky bounces, and other teams losing. Whatever happened to just playing hard and getting results on your own?????

What about the rest of the year? Had they BEEN playing balls to the wall, we wouldn't have to be scratching our head.

Hard to say,but "parity" is here.Your A-game has to be there vs. anybody.

For example,Maine blew out UND,and right now,I can't figger that out.

There are several teams that appear to be NC contenders. It's gonna be all about who is playing well at the right time.(Just like tonight's game.)

Ya, I think BC looked good early on. Anyway...

While I don't like the way they call open ice hitting from behind at the collegiate level, Joe Whitney has to know by now to refrain from those types of hits. On the ensuing PP, Carey went off on a bad change...he should have stayed with the play. Him going off really created a virtual 5-on-3 and Maine capitalized before the guy off the bench could get back in the play.

2nd Maine goal: last minute of the period--killer. 4th line on the ice, Tommy Atkinson falls asleep and doesn't tie up House.

3rd Maine goal: first minute of a period--another killer. Think maybe Dumoulin could have been a little more aggressive in going at Flynn. Instead, he was a little indecisive and I believe screened Muse in the process.

4th Maine goal: Cross loses his stick, eventually preventing him from getting to a loose puck. Not sure if Muse was screened, but it looked like the shot either hit something or was a bit of a knuckleball.

Not much else to add from the BC side of things. Wasn't their night, it happens.

This does show me that Maine can be the team I thought they'd be. There's a lot of talent on that team and I would imagine a win like this is just what they need to get them going on a run.
