Re: Maine Black Bears 2010-2011 - Part Deux

Hi Black Bear Fans. Yeah, there’s a separate BU v. UMaine thread, but all they talk about is where to eat. And don’t want to talk to or hear from BU fans anyway.
In HE, BU is 8-5-4 with 20 pts; UM 8-4-3 with 19 points and 3 games in hand. In pairwise tied!. What a fun weekend you have in store. Well, if Maine does well. And isn’t that likely with injured players having returned? Millan played lights out last weekend at UNH, but Wildcats trying to find their 2010 groove. Perhaps fan support will help Black Bears find theirs, so good luck and kick Spot’s butt.

Re: Maine Black Bears 2010-2011 - Part Deux

Sorry Priceless but your excuses disguised as logic don't fly. Today, this team is not in position to make the NCAA tournament. That's unacceptable for this level of talent and for a team that's been in the Top Ten most of the year. Who expected them to be better than this? Pollsters, fans and me, that's who. Maybe being an also ran and "winning at the Gutt" is OK with you but it's not good enough for me and it's not good enough for a team with Maine on its sweater. Tying UConn at Alfond? Not good enough. Giving away leads game after game? Not good enough. You, much like the coaching staff evidently, are ignoring the trend this team has in the third period and that's foolhardy. It needs to be addressed and cannot be ignored.

You're right in the sense that they've been good enough to stay in it to this point...but that in itself is not good enough.

Re: Maine Black Bears 2010-2011 - Part Deux

You should worry more about your team and less about us, TIMMAY!

Someone I actually respect asked for my opinion, and I gave it. Childish responses like these are less than productive. You know exactly who I am (one of you clowns even made a username out of my real name - cute) and it isn't Tim.

My expectations have been lowered. Anything over .500 is good for this program now.

The winning percentage is .614
St. Shawn's winning percentage was .640 His last season was .603

Horrors.

Re: Maine Black Bears 2010-2011 - Part Deux

They have 11 wins and five ties. Look over that schedule and tell me where the extra wins are.

UConn,MSU,PC,and NU...(And hanging on to a 3-1 lead to down UHN would've been nice,too.)

Thing is,this is a pretty d*** good team,and I expect them to beat other good teams a fair amount of the time.They only have three quality wins so far.Here's hoping they finish games better and get several more such wins in the second half of the season.

You can spin it anyway you want Walsh took one of the worst programs in the country and turned it into one of the best year in and year out. Whitehead took over one of the top programs and has turned it into an also ran the past 3 years soon to be 4. If you want to look at winning pct's what did Walsh's look like once all of Semler's players were gone and what does Whitehead's look like after all of Walsh's players were gone? I'm guessing you won't post that as it certainly won't support your love fest with Whitehead.

Relax guyz...the foochure of this team lies in the hands of the playerz. My guess is they want it, and want it badly. Letz see what transpires, but I wouldnt waste a lot of energy at this point......next two weekends are key obviously......now we get to see how much fire in these guyz bellies, eh? Its in their hands to do whatever they please.

To approach it like this, you also have to say they would have swept NoDak. Not sure many people on this board assumed they would do that.

W's on the schedule
UML (W)
UConn (T)
MSU (T)
NoDak (W)
NE (W)
NE (W)
@PC (W)
NH (L)
UMA (W)
Cornell (W)
PC (W)
BC (W)
(9-1-2)

L's on the schedule
MSU (L)
NoDak (W)
@BU (T)
@BC (L)
Miami (L)
(1-3-1)

Ties on the schedule
@UVM (W)
@BC (L)
@PC (T)
@MC (L)
@NE (T)
(1-2-2)

They should be 12-5-5; they're 11-6-5
The UHN game is the one that got away.

How much do you attribute his penchant for breaking NCAA rules for taking a nothing program and turning it into "one of the best"? That doesn't factor into the equation, right?
And Wally et al: spare me the "It was just extra pudding from the dining hall" crap. There was some of that, there were also honest mistakes. There's also the fact that Shawn liked to bend, or outright break, major recruiting rules. You can go ahead and believe he built the program on hard work and dedication (and Uncle Harold's money). I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you if you think the rules that were broken didn't contribute to the program going from nothing to national contender in a few years.

Shawn from 1987-2001: 376-158-42 (.674)
Tim from 2003-2011: 160-111-29 (.535)

Agree. It's all up the boys at this point.

You seriously don't think Northeastern got away? Tying UConn at Alfond isn't a game that got away? Giving up an extra attacker goal at BU didn't get away? This team should be 15-5-2 at worst and that would put it in the NCAA tournament where it belongs.

I was looking at the schedule as a whole. They should be 12-5-5. They've won and tied games they were not picked to win or tie. You look at the schedule and only see the losses or ties. Try looking at the whole schedule and seeing that there are times they've overachieved.

Re: Maine Black Bears 2010-2011 - Part Deux

This team's performance away from Alfond arena is why I am so discouraged. Hi, Dead Horse!

But really - the nature of most sports is that your home record will often be better than your road. But you need to maintain some form of having the same team that plays at home show up anywhere. Your talent doesn't matter much in this equation, but the closer your number is to 0 just means that the same team is showing up anywhere. For example, Lowell is 3rd on this list because they're a lousy team at home and on the road ;) Here's the % difference of home vs. road/neutral win/loss records in our conference. UNH and 'Mack's numbers are impressive IMHO

Northeastern +2.14%
UNH 0
UMass Lowell -5.71%
Merrimack -6.84%
BU -9.79%
Vermont -12.5%
Boston College -24.6%
UMass -25%
Providence -31.34%
Maine -43.33%

Ouchies.

When? And don't tell me North Dakota because that's at home and if you're home ice is Alfond Arena and you think you're a national contender you better get 3 points there. I expected no less. Ditto for BC. And seeing as they haven't won a meaningful road game I'm not seeing any overachievement.

This team has underachieved so far. Fact not opinion.

Re: Maine Black Bears 2010-2011 - Part Deux

When it's all said and done,I think we all want Tim to succeed,because that will give us a couple extra Maine games to watch after the RS,at the very least. Furthermore,he is by all accounts a good guy,and he runs a clean program.

He recruited poorly for a while,and that was on him,true...But he has the horses this year,and the latest BC game shows that this team can play at an elite level.(Yeah,the 'tending is a little dicey,but I've seen all three guys,and I think each of them has the tools.)All this squad needs to make a great 2nd-half run is to take the ice with the conviction that they can impose their will on anyone.Against most teams,they can.

I would love to see that happen;otherwise,I might never get to spend a night or two in lovely Bridgeport again.(Best tattoo parlors and biker-bars south of Seabrook,NH.)

How'd I get involved in this?

I bought the Law firms book for 30 bucks the day it came out, I have some idea of what happened maybe not as much as you seeing as you were involved in some of the extra curricular activities

Re: Maine Black Bears 2010-2011 - Part Deux

The teams biggest problem has been effort and goaltending. Goaltending is the big equalizer and Maine hasn't been getting it night and night out

Goaltending for sure..............easy goals...........the special teams, power play and penalty kill has really shown improvement......... Hopefully Timmy doesn't "dicker" too much with that improving trend..........
