Re: Maine Black Bears 2010-2011 - Part Deux
So you're a proponent of bringing back the "last 16" rule as well then? The NCAA abandoned that too. Which I am happy they did. These games all count the same whether they are played in October or March. Since a large portion of the OOC games around the country take place in the first few weekends, I really wouldn't like to see them discounted. On the flip side, "rewarding" a team that did better at the end is not fair because the scheduling is not equal for everyone, so someone with a backloaded schedule will clearly fare worse than an equal team facing an easy schedule late. Add in injuries that could happen early vs. late for various teams and you have another part that makes it somewhat unfair.
In the end, does it make sense to reward a team for failing to compete at the beginning of the season and penalize a team that does compete early on? Seems arbitrary to me... I don't think it makes much sense but... just one man's opinion.
Later in the season Maine "tanked" but still made the NCAA tournament because of those road worthy wins (bonus points). I would prefer to see a team that was improving as the season goes along be rewarded for their hard work and development. Perhaps that's why the NCAA abandoned that component at the end of that season.
