Maine Black Bears 2010-2011 - Part Deux

Re: Maine Black Bears 2010-2011 - Part Deux

As great a coach as York is, he no doubt has the benefit of oftentimes being able to pick and choose pretty much any bigtime recruit he wants, especially those out here in the East. Walsh brought in great talent as well, as those Maine teams from the early/mid 90's looked more like the Red Army team than a college squad. As much as some Maine fans want to believe the talent is still there, in my eyes the difference is night and day...

It doesn't matter how this Maine team stacks up next to Walsh's, the only thing that matters is how they stack up against other, current, college teams. This team has more talent than the vast majority of teams in the country, lack of talent is not why they are losing.

Re: Maine Black Bears 2010-2011 - Part Deux

almost none of these boys, (if ANY) are going to the NHL
Nyquist lost his chance, UNLESS HE IS NURSING AN INJURY AND CAN RECOVER

did any of you see how long Todd Jackson lasted in Detroit's system?

Did you see how long Jimmy was in Detroit's system?
Last year Nyquist was ranked the number one prospect in Detroit's system, I think it's a bit early to be saying he lost his chance.

Re: Maine Black Bears 2010-2011 - Part Deux

Sad to say but that is what Maine hockey is now a days an afterthough of a great program gone down the drain...thank you timmay that is the only thing you have been successful at during your tenure at Maine.

Really? because Maine started this season pretty highly ranked. Fans, writers, and coaches across the country discussed how dangerous Maine was, the team has been receiving way more respect in the polls than they deserve.
I don't think any opponent has underestimated this team, Maine (maybe BC) fans are the only ones who have been calling the program an afterthought.

Re: Maine Black Bears 2010-2011 - Part Deux

JUMPING ON EACH OTHER IN CELEBRATION?? SERIOUSLY GUYS??

A coach with a brain would be telling this team that NO ONE should be smiling over that **** show...and everybody better come to focus and work tomorrow. That was pathetic.

They needed to gain momentum and make a statement together, and instead, they blew their second multi-goal 3rd period lead at home in the last 3 games. This offense that averages 4.5 goals/game at home scored 3 on an unranked team's backup.

Bunch of frauds at this point.

A win is a win, Maine dominated most of the game. The goaltending was awful, the first 2 goals were a joke. Not sure which senior threw the puck out front for PC to tie it up but he should be benched. Anyone know why Sully wasn't dressed? If Marty is in net against BC the score will be in touchdowns

Re: Maine Black Bears 2010-2011 - Part Deux

A few of my thoughts on the game...
--Thank God Beaudry didn't get the start
--I'll take the win for sure, but giving up two, 2 goal leads is simply inexcusable.
--thought Mangene was the player of the game, he's a machine. One forecheck in particular he was all over the man with the puck for an eternity.
--A few very costly devensive turnovers that need to stop, pronto.
--Don't know his name or anything about him but I thought #44 of Providence was the slowest, poorest stick- handling, and overall worst player I've seen this year. He really stood out to me and got beat to the puck nearly every time
--Was impressed with #21 of Providence's tenacity
--Thought our mostly freshman line of Anthoine, Swavely, and Beattie (I think), was the best of the night. They really did a good job hounding the puck and pressuring the Providence end.
--Thought Diamond's penalty was a bit excessive, no more than two minutes (from how it looked live, haven't seen a replay of it)
--Pleased with the way they killed it off and got a shortie to boot.
--No, the game shouldn't of even been close to going into OT, but they came out strong and scored early into it and there is something to be said for that
--Finally, props to the fans who were louder towards the end of the game than the team deserved, seemed to will them into winning.

It was off of Van Dyk's stick.

They said Sullivan had an injury. Not sure what.

And you know what?? Goaltending is my 2nd thought. This offense should be explosive and it is mediocre. Gee, Sunday, on the rare occasion a Maine skater takes it into the zone themselves, I bet he won't take it to the top of the right circle and try an angled cross ice pass for a slapper from the top of the other circle. That'll be their big scoring chance. Otherwise it'll be dump, lose the forechecking battle, out, rinse and repeat like it's been for 10 years.

They're predictable and uninspired.

And that would be?....

Wait, I think I can answer my own question.

It must be that the team never quit, right? Like, despite all the adversity of playing at home against a backup goalie...no matter how many times PC took multi-goal leads....Maine hung around

Yup, that's gotta be it. Character telling, really.

Re: Maine Black Bears 2010-2011 - Part Deux

In 21 games played, we have 7 regulation wins. Short of the flukey NoDak weekend, those wins are against UMass Lowell, UMass, Northeastern x 2 and Providence. The #6, #7, #8 and #10 teams in Hockey East.

Re: Maine Black Bears 2010-2011 - Part Deux

Maine worked hard tonight for the number of goals they received. Swavely and Cornell played well tonight along with the top lines. Their passes however were off the mark and just couldn't seem to connect. Gates was very effective for Providence. If Diamond had remained in the game, I think the game never goes to OT. He would have scored a goal due to his playing down low and his willingness to "get his nose dirty". There were numerous opportunities down low for Maine which were not capitalized on. Anyone know if he received a game disqualification?

Re: Maine Black Bears 2010-2011 - Part Deux

The team did what they needed to do to beat Providence, that is the only thing that matters. Do they deserve special praise? no. But there is no reason to complain, they got the job done. Would they beat BC if they played like that, probably not. But again, they didn't play BC, the two points are important and Maine got them.

Re: Maine Black Bears 2010-2011 - Part Deux

The team did what they needed to do to beat Providence.

By blowing a 2 goal lead in the 3rd? They made the line between 2 points and no points a heck of a lot thinner than it should have been.

And what does that even mean: We did what we needed to do to beat Providence??

So they played down to them? Are they in position to be playing down to anyone right now?

You're saying they did the bare minimum, and you're alright with that.

Re: Maine Black Bears 2010-2011 - Part Deux

Wally, Larry said that Sully had a lower body injury and he was hoping to learn more after the game.

As for the rest, neither the Pairwise or the Hockey East standings count style points or OT wins as anything other than wins. Two points and a win is two points and a win; the ultimate goal is the NCAAs and like it or not a win helps that cause. So whatever. Save your b*tching for Sunday when it'll be more warranted.

Re: Maine Black Bears 2010-2011 - Part Deux

Even with a win...I came away not feeling good about the team tonight...way too many careless turnovers via the pass...soft goals and no physical play to say the least...it's a win but certainly alot question-marks remain....they better be ready for a STORM called BC on Sunday.......

The play tonight has been on par with our performance since the beginning of November.

Hockey East Standings? We've got 7 games left against BU, BC, UNH and the dirty Mack. This play won't cut wins against those teams, so who cares unless we're really into jockying for position between 7th and 5th. Regardless of where we land in that scenerio, we can't win on the road, let alone and god forbid against a good team....so again, who cares?

Pairwise? A win against PC aint gonna rocket us forward and we're on the outside looking in, with multiple teams in the way, and if those teams want it more than us.....once again, who cares?

Re: Maine Black Bears 2010-2011 - Part Deux

HOw are you all guaging talent?
ability to score on a break away?

ability to read the play and anticipate what the D is about to do, and where one's linemates are going to be?

tools to make it to the NHL?
I guess I can agree that many of the current players are as talented as the Maine players in the 90's, but I think that that puts them at ECHL/AHL level today, when it used to give them a chance at the NHL.

almost none of these boys, (if ANY) are going to the NHL
Nyquist lost his chance, UNLESS HE IS NURSING AN INJURY AND CAN RECOVER

did any of you see how long Todd Jackson lasted in Detroit's system?

Todd had great wheels and mediocre/poor hands...In essence,a speedy,hard-working grinder.I never thought of him as an NHL player. Not once.

Some of you guys are looking back to the past with rose-colored glasses on.PK and Jimmy were the ONLY Walsh players who looked to be sure-fire NHL standouts while still at Maine.Whitehead has recruited fairly well, except for that one disastrous class that set us back for years. And he's got a few of his Bears in the bigs as well.

Whatever...Who cares about the NHL,anyway? This is 2011,and we have a number of excellent college players in the fold.(Probably a couple of future NHL guys, too.)Would I prefer that Shawn was coaching them..?Hell,yes!But we have Timmy. And it is incumbent on him to do his job well while he has the tools to do it.

If not,he has overstayed his welcome,IMO.There is just no excuse for a bad year this time around.
