Maine 2011 Offseason #2: Wondering If We'll Outdraw Women's Hoops This Year

Re: Maine 2011 Offseason #2: Wondering If We'll Outdraw Women's Hoops This Year

So you agree or disagree that ultimately Tim Whitehead should be held responsible for the failures of the last two seasons? Because I think that's all anyone's looking for, whatever responsible means (loss of job, shorter leash, new assistants, whatever). And frankly it seems like you've absolved him of all responsibility just because you don't appreciate the snarkiness of some posters here.

Which if I might add is both unfair and inconsistent with your insisting on holding Shawn responsible for every pie his hand was in.

When I have concerns about the head coach, or anything else hockey-related, at Maine I don't post on a message board. I contact the University Administration and express my feelings and they respond. I have recommended others do the same (but use a little more prudence than to hold a public b!tc#fest on Senior Night) and been told to pound sand. That's also why I posted earlier this year that things were in the works that should improve the situation. It may turn out that they don't pan out and Tim will eventually be replaced as coach. We'll see. But the feeling around here that Tim's job is hanging by a thread and that he has lost the support of the Administration shows just how out of touch people are with reality.

Re: Maine 2011 Offseason #2: Wondering If We'll Outdraw Women's Hoops This Year

Shawn and I cleared the air when we played the high school title game there a few years later. He was a great coach and a very flawed man; he wasn't the Christlike figure that gets portrayed in these threads. What bugs me is that people look at the Walsh era with rose-colored glasses and make ridiculous statements (like the entire state of Maine was fans of the hockey team) about the 80's and 90's. If you go back and read my posts you might find I haven't been arguing that Tim is the end all be all of coaches; just observing (to the ire of many) that neither was Shawn. Anything short of calling for Tim's head on a stake is seen around these parts as being an apologist.
Shawn sure did have his faults as a person, but he grew as time went on and by the time he passed on, he had grown into a man anyone could be proud to be associated with. As far as his coaching, he WAS a great coach, way better than Whitehead could ever be. It's really not right to even mention them in the same paragraph as far as their abilities to coach a hockey team and bring out the best in individual players and the team as a whole. Plus, he was charismatic and exciting, and so were his teams. Of course "the entire state of Maine" isn't a fan of anything so technically you are correct, but there was MUCH more of a sense of pride in OUR hockey team than there is now and if you can't accept that, then YOU are the one who is being ridiculous! Most of us want to have a hockey team we can be proud of again and we're convinced that Whitehead will never give that to us. It's not like we judged him after one or two seasons, he's EARNED our disapproval. If you actually showed up at the Alfond and watched a few games now and then, you'd understand why we feel this way.

What administration? The U has a new President and a new AD. Earlier this year they weren't in place. Are you saying Abbott supports Tim? what about the new President, does he support Tim? I think they understand he has a contract and I don't doubt he has a job until his contract is up. I wouldn't want to bet he has it after his contract is up, would you?

So, the only person in the United States administration is President Obama? Everyone else in the White House is...what?

Buddies with Tim Whitehead, apparently.

Re: Maine 2011 Offseason #2: Wondering If We'll Outdraw Women's Hoops This Year

Bottom line is really very simple. If the Admin, the University, the students, the state want a program that generates excitement and pride then Whitehead has to go. He's not the man for the job....been proven over and over again...never was the right guy, never will be the right guy. He's like Wilson....D3 material, that is all.

Sorry, man, I'm trying to give you the benefit of the doubt and talk you through some logic here, but you've dodged the question. I don't care about the administration or his contract or how he is or isn't hanging. I'm talking about the hockey team, the way its performed the last two years, ON THE ICE. Why in God's name is that OK, and why shouldn't the head coach be held accountible for it?

Because hockey is a bloodsport. And with no accountibility, you can't win. Just doesn't work. Ask the Canucks. If the head coach has no accountibility, then how can you ask the players to be held accountible? You can't and they're not, and that's what I've seen on the ice lately.

I'm not asking you to talk about politics or inside information. I'm asking you to talk about the hockey team, on the hockey board. Simple math?

The buck stops with the Pres and the AD, if they don't believe Tim is doing the job he is done whether or not others with no power think he is gods gift to UMaine.

Cannucks coach didnt get fired

Agreed, although his team did not win the cup. To his credit, his team did make the playoffs. Each year, as a Maine fan, it gets more and more difficult to remember what that is like.

Maine made the playoffs as well. They just choked earlier

Re: Maine 2011 Offseason #2: Wondering If We'll Outdraw Women's Hoops This Year

HE Playoffs don't count. It's the NCAA's or bust.
It use to be the Attitude was when wearing a Maine Hockey sweater was: Playing for Championships...Now: Happy just to have Home ice in the Hockey East QF's and "IF" you make it to Boston then it's the icing on the cake...with the thought of the NC$$'s just a after thought.....sad;huh. Lets get back to winning Hockey...something WRONG with that..?

Before I wrote my original post, I thought about that distinction. I did not think it was necessary. Most Maine fans I know do not think making the Hockey East playoffs is much of an accomplishment. Just don't come in 9th or 10th and you are in. I guess some fans just have lower expectations for Maine Hockey. Perhaps that is why they defend Timmay?

Re: Maine 2011 Offseason #2: Wondering If We'll Outdraw Women's Hoops This Year

I certainly rooted for Tim all along, but his grave is already dug at Maine, and justifiably so...He's clearly shown that he can't compete with the better programs.

To extend him beyond his last year would take a 42-1-2 year,if even that,IMO...And that isn't going to happen.

It is not all about winning, it is about getting a UMaine education and degree.................

That's the student's responsibility (and biggest responsibility), but it's the coaches responsibility to produce a winning team. They haven't.
