Re: Maine 2011 Offseason #2: Wondering If We'll Outdraw Women's Hoops This Year

Last year's season opener vs. Albany. Almost 8000 people there to see them lose 3-0. Actually, the first three games drew really well. The weather was great, and that's what brings fans in.

What doesn't bring fans in is a mediocre hockey team with a bad coach. We all want to see them win, but they just look TERRIBLE on paper. Timmy has to pull something out of his a** to stay longer. An NCAA bid could save him, but not if his team gets hot in the HE playoffs and magically wins an auto-bid. At-large bid will be Timmy's only savior to stay in Orono.

How does Maine look TERRIBLE on paper? Have you seen what other teams lost? I honestly can't see Maine finishing worse than third this year. I'd love to hear an argument on how UNH or Merrimack is going to be better than Maine. And for the record, I don't think Maine is going to be great this year I just think other teams will be worse.

Did Merrimack and UNH lose their goalies?

It's not going to be a particularly dominant year for Hockey East.

da Costa is a big loss for the Mack, NH has a few maybe-bloomers but obviously that top line is quite a loss for them, BC will be solid per usual -- but how life without Muse will take getting used to for the 1st couple months. Maine is taking a step backward from their non-playoff performance a year ago

BU has gotta be the favorite.

That doesn't even make sense. "There's no more believing in him, but there are some who do." That's quite a paradox.

And I love how anyone who doesn't agree with you automatically doesn't care about the program. Only enlightened souls that agree with you.

when WAS the last time you chatted about HOCKEY?
it is always some sort of "i know you are but what am I"
or, Grant was a doo doo head, just like Shawn.
talk hockey!

Schneider is smallish, but there isn't a bad seat in the house. With the low roof, it can get pretty loud in there. Does it look big time? No. But its not a bad place to watch a game at all. Frankly, if Leaman gets them winning, that could be a pretty fun program. 3000 seats is about right to create demand, and there are more people in metro Providence than the entire state of Maine (most of which's population is nowhere near Orono). PC may be a "small Catholic school" but they still average 7k+ for hoops, and Maine isn't even the "large(st) state school" in the state of Maine by much (USM is within about 1,000 students).

You always advocate for bigger and better conferences (letting in UND), and dropping the "weak" programs from HEA (Lowell, for example), but I think you are delusional. Maine is a lot closer institutionally and resource wise to the UMLs and PCs than the BCs and BUs of the world. That's not even a personnel thing (coaching, players, etc.). That's a finances and infrastructure issue. As much as people ***** and moan that Maine is turning into LSSU, the easiest way for Maine to become LSSU is to get rid of the teams Maine has an actual institutional advantage over. Setting aside athletics, the campus in Orono is falling apart. There's a reason the percentage of in state students keeps going up and up- things are decrepit and price is really the only selling point right now. While UNH and UMA and the privates are all building new dorms and academic buildings, everything on Maine's campus other than the rec center and an engineering building or two is in embarrassing condition. UMaine isn't an easy sell to anyone- hockey players, other athletes, non-athletes, etc. You remove the other programs with selling point issues, and Maine is stuck trying to sell itself over schools with a lot more going for them.

Metro Providence has more people than the entire state of Maine???? That's news to me!

USM-POGO is a commuter school.

UNH spends $10 million more on athletics than Maine.......who is getting more for their money???

YOU are the one that is delusional.

Rather than go through 22 pages of off-season drivel, I'll just ask. Has anyone heard if WABI (or any other Maine network) has announced interest (or disinterest) in broadcasting Maine Hockey this coming season? And if so, I wonder what the chances of getting an HD truck up to Orono are (I bet slim-to-none)?

So they don't look very good on paper is what you're saying?

Um.... Coaching?

Survey says.... #1 answer!

They'll probably do half of the home games as usual, along with 2-4 football games and maybe 3-4 hoops games. As for HD, I know with the Alfond Renovation that they were going to redo some of the broadcast cables throughout the building as the old ones were hanging all over the place. TV5 was the first to go all-HD in the state for their newscasts but I don't know if their truck and mobile equipment has made the HD conversion.

No chance of HD, they don't have enough bandwidth on their microwave repeater.

Its great you helped with the offseason drivel though

We have excellent coaching. Tim Whitehead is one of the best college coaches around. And we are lucky to have great assistant coaches as well.

On paper we are a good team. I don't understand the negative posts?

Go Black Bears!

Re: Maine 2011 Offseason #2: Wondering If We'll Outdraw Women's Hoops This Year

Since Rhode Island only has 1 million, that must include people from 2 other states...........are 1.6 million people Providence hockey fans???

No ****, Sherlock. Are 1.3 million people Black Bear hockey fans?
