Re: Maine 2011 Offseason #2: Wondering If We'll Outdraw Women's Hoops This Year

What's wrong with expecting your team to win?

There's a difference between expecting your team to win and having realistic expectations. By your measurement, had the guys not rallied from a 4-2 deficit vs. Lake State the 1993 season would have been a disappointment. The 1992 season (where we were #1 wire to wire, won both the Hockey East regular season and tournament titles as well as having the first Hobey-Baker winner in school history) was a failure. That's not realistic. Look, New England sports fans are very lucky, but Terry Francona is right: This doesn't happen very often.

Put another way...

Well said.

It will all be worth it. The arena looked strange with all the seating torn out. I am so excited for the future. Go Black Bears!

Coach Whitehead will lead us to victory. Another great year of college hockey is just around the corner! :D:D:D

Tim -- please spend more time recruiting and 'coaching' and less time on USCHO.

That would have been a disappointment if Maine had not come back and won in 1993.

Well, you said that you wouldn't be happy with just makin the title game and consider not winning the title not a great season. Your words, not mine.

Any Frozen Four year is a great year. A good year would e a standard year by making the NCAAs and maybe winning a game. Anything less would be considered a bad year. A Hockey East Championship would automatically be a good year considering that earns the auto bid.

I don't see why expecting the team you root for to win is a bad thing. Most fans want their team to win it all.

I never said that I don't root for my team to win. Winning a national title is the ultimate goal and everyone wants their team to achieve that. But many fans would agree that winning it all isn't the only way to determine if their team had a great season.

Re: Maine 2011 Offseason #2: Wondering If We'll Outdraw Women's Hoops This Year

This whole Whtehead thing will be determned by one thing.......money......more specifically, revenues. If the team starts winning consistently, then Whitehead will most likely reman as head coach. If the team continues to lose consistently, then Whitehead is out. The Alfond Foundation, along with other big donors, expect a certain level of success from this program. They are not making these investments for nothing. Add to that declining ticket and concession revenue, and Whitehead has a lot of work to do.

This is not meant as gratuitous piling-on,but I have to opine that Tim is done when his contract expires.

Anything short of a NC will not be seen as enough to keep him on,IMO,and a NC ain't coming up I-95 in '11/'12...(I'll be pleasantly surprised if they even get a NCAA bid, frankly.)

Cindy's head rolling into the basket leads me to believe that this AD expects his (2) flagship programs to excel, not just be kinda-sorta in the mix.(And I agree with him.)

Re: Maine 2011 Offseason #2: Wondering If We'll Outdraw Women's Hoops This Year

I view a season as successful if they outperform the expectations that were placed upon them. Usually for me that is to make the national tournament for Maine, but depending on the year that changes. The tournament is a crap shoot since its one and done, whoever gets hot wins it. Its not like a 7 game series, where usually the best team wins.

Re: Maine 2011 Offseason #2: Wondering If We'll Outdraw Women's Hoops This Year

Hey Maine fans,

Could you please tell whether it's hard to obtain tickets for a Maine *football* games? My buddy and I are thinking of driving up to Orono and watching UMass Football play there in November one last time before starting MAC play...

Asking because Alfond regularly sells out for hockey...

Thanks!

Anything short of a NC? Are you kidding? If the team makes NCAA this season Tim is here to stay. We're not looking at a failed experiment here. Regardless of the fans' feelings, Tim is 216-138-43 at Maine.

TW is capable of winning a NC. He's already come pretty **** close.

As much as I would enjoy watching a legendary coach take the helm again in Orono, I don't see that happening any time soon. When you look at it objectively, TW has done relatively well at his time in Maine.

Troll away.

You'll be fine. Away seats are in Q, R, and S on the east side of the field. We would be happy to have you guys up! Football averages more fans than hockey, but obviously Alfond Stadium is much bigger. Crowd will depend on how good the team is, opponent, and weather. If all goes well, UM could be fighting for a playoff spot. Of course, UMass is ineligible for the FCS playoffs and the CAA title this year.

What's the record the last five seasons? The last four?

Not good.

Last five seasons: 1 game over .500

Last four: seven games under.

Now, what else does that time period coincide with? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
