Re: Maine 2011 Offseason #2: Wondering If We'll Outdraw Women's Hoops This Year

Hey dipsh*t.......does it really matter what the populations are?.......Maine has many hockey fans, Providence doesn't......period.

So why did you ask if all 1.6 million were hockey fans?

Re: Maine 2011 Offseason #2: Wondering If We'll Outdraw Women's Hoops This Year

That is so true.

I assume that first line came from KnowNothing. Considering that most of the population is located closer to Boston than Orono; and considering that most of them aren't hockey fans; and considering that even fewer are college hockey fans...no, they weren't. But you guys keep living in this fantasy world where Shawn was a Christlike figure who could do no wrong and everyone from Kittery to Madawaska just loved the hockey team. I'm sure it's better to live in that mythical world than the real one.

No chance of HD, they don't have enough bandwidth on their microwave repeater.

Its great you helped with the offseason drivel though

Look at you Wally, talking repeater bandwidth! :p

Re: Maine 2011 Offseason #2: Wondering If We'll Outdraw Women's Hoops This Year

they used to be

KIA -- I like most of your posts, but be a little more realistic.

Most people in the state approach the men's hockey team the way I approach(ed) the US Women's Soccer team...

If asked on the street, they're aware the team has been relevant, at times, over the past 20 years. Probably 50% could specifically recall that they won in (ironic to the analogy) 1999. Otherwise, could they name more than 2 players on any particular year? Nope.

...But...If wind is caught that the team is playing in a national/international semi-final or final, will they throw on a team colored shirt, take 10 minutes to brush up on the happenings of the last year, and cheer hard for a few hours? Yep.

If the team loses, are they particularly torn up? For maybe 10 minutes...then they drink a beer and are over it. And they won't tune in, or really think about it again until the next time they're in a big final.

Just because I cheered for the US team in the finals doesn't make me a US Women's soccer fan. (Relevant to the overall population: ) It's not a BAD thing to have such a devoted, outspoken minority supporting the Bears, but don't let that loud and proud group jade your perception of how the state as a whole approaches the team....or used to for that matter. If it seemed like more people used to 'care', it was just because, using said approach, Maine participated in finals much more frequently.

This is some sort of funny joke, right? The PBruins are 4th in the AHL in attendance, Portland is well down the list. I've seen Schneider with SRO crowds to watch Mount St. Charles play.

You can denigrate USM as a commuter school all you want, but the fact is more kids are choosing USM than UMaine. The academic reputation isn't as good, but at least you can attend class without having to wear your winter coat because the heating unit in Neville is broken and spewing fumes and not heat (as happened to me), and you also don't have to take finals in Stevens with paint falling off the ceiling on you (as also happened to me).

Regarding UNH "getting more" for their $10 million more investment in athletics (which is a non-trivial sum, by the way. Doesn't that close to double Maine's budget?), OF COURSE THEY GET MORE! My whole point is that UNH has numerous institutional advantages over UMaine, be it academic reputation (UNH caters to high achieving out of state students and wants to bring in those tuition dollars, Maine caters to in state students), be it infrastructure (newish dorms, on-campus apartments, student union), be it geography (easier to get to Boston for concerts/events), what have you.

This is Maine, it isn't Texas or Alabama or even Massachusetts. The University of Maine has no reason to be a national, division one athletic power. It's nice that the hockey team could be, but it isn't worth that $10M further investment or whatever to do it. I'd rather spend that on the academic/campus infrastructure side (the new rec center is a nice start, but every dorm on campus needs at least a face lift and in some cases to be torn down, and the academic buildings need to generally be gutted) and bring the university into the latter part of the 20th century than spend it on chasing an FCS football title no one cares about two weeks after the game has been played.

Why Tim may not be the best, he is not the worst. And to say that we are heading for a long time of mediocrity is kind of naive, as all it takes is one/two good recruiting classes to be a top contending team in hockey east, Merrimack for example. You get one good forward, with a decent second forward, and then if in the time they are you get a solid goal tender, you will be all set. Maine's biggest problem has been solving the goaltender position since Bishop.

Re: Maine 2011 Offseason #2: Wondering If We'll Outdraw Women's Hoops This Year

Just noticed too that South Portland native, goaltender Jon Gillies, got selected to team USA roster for u18. To Bad maine couldn't get him, and that Northeastern snagged him. Big Kid at 6'5", probably still growing too. oh well.

Maybe it was because of our "voluntee"r goaltending coach

Or maybe it's because he actually lives somewhere else now. Or maybe it's because South Portland is actually closer to Boston anyway. Or maybe it's because he wants to go to school in a city and not in the middle of nowhere. Or maybe it's because his favorite color is red.

It could be pretty much any reason, but let's blame the coach anyway.

Was going to write a 3 graph post about accountibility but what's the point.

This thread and Maine athletics these days give me a headache.

Shawn abused you in practices, didn't he? Made you his favorite little whipping boy, right?

Or maybe he just wouldn't let you have second helpings of dessert.

No, that was Red who did that. Shawn and Grant were pretty cool. The falling out happened a little later when it was revealed Shawn made up the rules as he liked, never mind what the NCAA, Hockey East or the school said about it. You might feel the same way if your boss lied to you and used you to violate the rules which resulted in your school being put on probation for three years. Or maybe you wouldn't...maybe you'd still worship the ground he walked on.

...and in second grade the other kids all shot spitballs at him. Now we're all paying the price!

So you don't like SW. Big deal. What's that have to do with TW? I still can't connect the dots of why failure is OK? Just because you think he follows the rulez? Plenty of coaches succeed and follow the rules, I think.

SW and TW aren't mutually exclusive, I guess is my point ultimately.

Shawn and I cleared the air when we played the high school title game there a few years later. He was a great coach and a very flawed man; he wasn't the Christlike figure that gets portrayed in these threads. What bugs me is that people look at the Walsh era with rose-colored glasses and make ridiculous statements (like the entire state of Maine was fans of the hockey team) about the 80's and 90's. If you go back and read my posts you might find I haven't been arguing that Tim is the end all be all of coaches; just observing (to the ire of many) that neither was Shawn. Anything short of calling for Tim's head on a stake is seen around these parts as being an apologist.

Re: Maine 2011 Offseason #2: Wondering If We'll Outdraw Women's Hoops This Year

I am amazed at how much inside information poster's on this board have. Perhaps if I paid more attention, I would better understand these allegations and counter-allegations.

Without any insider knowledge, my sources tell me that TW is a sucky coach.

PS - My sources are my own two eyes with which I watch the games and follow Maine Hockey with.

Re: Maine 2011 Offseason #2: Wondering If We'll Outdraw Women's Hoops This Year

So you agree or disagree that ultimately Tim Whitehead should be held responsible for the failures of the last two seasons? Because I think that's all anyone's looking for, whatever responsible means (loss of job, shorter leash, new assistants, whatever). And frankly it seems like you've absolved him of all responsibility just because you don't appreciate the snarkiness of some posters here.

Which if I might add is both unfair and inconsistent with your insisting on holding Shawn responsible for every pie his hand was in.
