Okay, fair enough. I think the NCHC had the best overall record in all non-conference games during those seasons, so I can't disagree. Now that we've established the criteria, the Big Ten is the best conference in college hockey this year regardless of who ends up winning the Frozen Four. You can't have it both ways.

It's different. Those schools were already members of the Big Ten conference. It just so happened that hockey was a sport that could not be officially recognized by the conference until enough schools within the conference had a team. Thanks to Penn State, it finally happened. After literally decades of thinking how wrong it felt to have the Gophers and Badgers not in the same hockey conference as Michigan, MSU, and OSU... that wrong was finally righted.

That isn't how it went down with the NCHC. Those schools were not already all in the same conference for all sports other than hockey, therefore you can't say it's the same thing. There was no valid reason for them to blow up what was left of the WCHA and CCHA at that time. It was simply a case of small-time schools trying to act like big shots. And before somebody comes at me with the predictable comebacks, I'm not saying they don't have good hockey teams. I'm simply stating the fact that they're small-time schools.

There is zero chance of that happening. I do not subscribe to the flawed theory that the best conference is the conference that the national champion comes from. The best conference is the one that has the best overall non-conference winning record over the course of the entire season.

Since you've been all over the board on this subject trying to find something that sticks, it's difficult to figure out what flawed theories you do subscribe to.

That's overstating your position just a bit. The B1G has sent four different teams to the Frozen Four with a total of seven appearances. Yes, they haven't come home with the trophy, and that matters, but it's not like the conference has been full of Miami of Ohio's for the last decade.

Shifting gears - I'm curious about opinion's on which teams people think are playing the best right now? I watched a lot of hockey this weekend in between my kids games. Sadly, I think there's a loose cog in the Gopher machine after two really crap efforts against a mediocre Wisco. I haven't seen them play to the same level they were at right before the xmas break since the 2nd half started. Denver was impressive to me and looks like a strong team for a FF repeat. I also thought Michigan continued to look pretty good and to me a slight favorite now for the FF as well. Western also looks to me like a dangerous team right now. I don't get to watch a lot of ECAC or HEA, so who else looks like they are ramping up their game of late?

This is like the scene in Christmas Story at the Chinese restaurant. No no no no no. Fa La La La La. Not Fa Ra Ra Ra Ra. The best conference has been determined by a preponderance of NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS, not PWR. NOT PWR. Comprende?

And before somebody comes at me with the predictable comebacks, I'm not saying they don't have good hockey teams. I'm simply stating the fact that they're small-time schools.

I was not a fan of the NCHC forming and the way everything went down, but it was the best for all teams not named Miami and UAX. The now CCHA and NCHC are similar schools of similar hockey budgets playing each other. We can argue about Western and Miami in the NCHC and Mankato and BSU in the CCHA, but overall it works for most of the teams in conference.

You can't tell me that the schools in the NCHC don't value their hockey program about about the same level. As much as I love the CCHA, they are a step down funding and facilities wise. (With the exception of Mankato and soon to be St Thomas.) The CCHA is competitive amongst themselves, the NCHC is competitive amongst themselves. That is what this college hockey fan is looking for.

Umm. That's how it had always and forever been with D1 hockey. No D1 program - zero - were ever part of any conference that the rest of the school was part of. A large number of them were not even in the same division with other sports. Hockey has always and forever pitted large otherwise D1 programs agains small schools that are otherwise D2. The outlier is the now B10, not the CCHA or NCHC. Very strange view of the world you have sir. And to the "small time" jab: as an MTU grad I have managed over quite a number of engineers from UM, MSU, OSU, Purdue, PSU, Wisconsin. They all did a very fine job.
 
Just saw a meme defining the best college football conference as the one with the most former players playing in the Superbowl. I bring it up here because it is patently silly to argue about the parameters that define "best". We can all come up with different parameters that are all reasonable. It doesn't make one better or worse - just different. What makes a conference "best" is an opinion - there is no right or wrong.

OP literally has his signature saying he thinks the B1G is better than the NCHC due to having more National Championships amongst member schools, then says Natty's don't define the "best" conference, OOC record does. He's a hypocrite.

Have you seen how they are becoming competitive in the CCHA in year two of being a D1 program? They are playing in a lucky to be average MN HS rink, and have significant support from the University. They have victories over Mankato and Tech. IMO they are well ahead of where I thought they would be. That is why I mentioned them.
