Laker Hockey 2009-10

Re: Laker Hockey 2009-10

“Truth”, you can sure push buttons. When the Lakers lose you write “FA” fan mail. You know Frank was unpopular in the Sault. That’s how JR got the job in the first place. Laker administrators had to pick FA or JR. Hmmmmmmmmmm. Putting the games aside, it’s a great time for Laker Hockey. The team was in fourth place with two games in hand the last weekend of January and near the top of the league in goaltending, scoring, power play, and penalty kill. They had games in hand on the majority of the league. Their talent level is equal to the best teams in the CCHA according to most everyone on this site including guests from other teams. Is it finally safe to say that coaching will be the difference maker this year? Getting the talent to play their best when it’s needed….. We know they can perform against the bottom third of the country (7-0-2 record against 42 through 58 ranked teams nationally) but performing against the top continues to be a problem (0-5-2 against the top 20 ranked teams in the country). This weekend is a perfect opportunity to change things. Our Lakers host FSU who is 3rd in the CCHA and tenth ranked in the country but has just one regulation win in its last eight games. Better yet FSU is just 4-5-3 away from home.

Re: Laker Hockey 2009-10

If I am not mistaken Sovereign expressed an interest in this a couple years back. They must have finally worked out a deal. As has been mentioned earlier whoever is broadcasting the game has no impact on what happens on the ice. I do hope however that it signals an improvement in the quality of the broadcasts. Myself, and many others I know, while remaining a loyal Laker fan had stopped listening to the broadcasts. More importantly, the next three weeks pose some big challenges for the Lakers. I guess we will all find out if they really are a top four team or if down the stretch they prove to be a ninth place team. Go Lakers! I want home ice!

Re: Laker Hockey 2009-10

So I wonder if the pre-game shows and the Monday Laker Hockey Shows will continue?

Re: Laker Hockey 2009-10

I know i piled on Paul VanWagoner but i am real sorry to hear of him loseing his whole job in this day and age exspecially.

Good luck Paul and best wishes.

Re: Laker Hockey 2009-10

Ferris is winless in 7 out of their last 8 games and is just 4-8-3 against teams above .500. We must take advantage of this especially this being the last home series of the year. If we can't get at least a split this weekend, our chances at home ice for the first round takes a serious blow. If we split the rest of the series, we should be okay for home ice. It isn't asking for much, the Lakers are capable of doing it. Hopefully those power-play goals scored last game at Miami will give them confidence heading into this weekend. Also hoping the goal Nehring scored last game at Miami gives him a confience boast as he was a goal scoring slump.

Re: Laker Hockey 2009-10

So Sovereign Communications now owns basically every radio station in the Soo. Maybe this is all a conspiracy by Truth Squad to get Bill Crawford back in the booth. Who knows?

Doesn't seem like it is a good situation to have the same guy running all the big stations in town.

While I was not the biggest Van Wagonner fan it seems pretty sad for the folks there to push him aside for Crawford. Paul you did a great job and while I had some problems with some of your antics you did the best you could!

Re: Laker Hockey 2009-10

With the Lakers remaining schedule it is going to be tough for them to get home ice even in the first round of the playoffs. Ferris has been slumping but still pose a tall task this weekend for the Lakers but if Lake State plays 60 minutes both games they should have success. What i think is the biggest concern is the final two weeks traveling up to Fairbanks who is comeing off of a big weekend and have had a strong year. Then closeing out the season at Northern sure is going to be tough to get any points there, they have been fireing on all cylinders lately and i am sure will be looking for retribution for getting beat soundly in the Soo earlier in the season.

I hope that the power play is going to start clicking on a more regular bases because it will be tough enough to get the desperatly needed points without it.

We also must keep in mind that it was Paul that pushed for an hour pregame show and many other innovative features this year.

I'm somewhat excited to have Bill back behind the mike but hopefully he will not sound as stale as he did last year.

Nail... Head. You hit it, twice!

1. Because of the change in broadcasting stations, fans finally got what we've been asking of the old regime for years. We finally get the Laker Hockey Show streamed live on the web and an audio archive saved on the website for those that couldn't listen in. Simple things that the old station couldn't seem to grasp the concept of, even in the age of information & technology. Thankfully someone actually listened and hopefully they'll keep it up with the changes afoot.

2. If Crawford is back behind the mic, I hope he shows more interest than he did last year. In my book, he is the one true "voice of Laker Hockey" & has always done a tremendous job over the years, but he just seemed like he didn't care last year.

Radio Jobs Lost in Transition:
http://www.sooeveningnews.com/news/x626049716/Radio-jobs-lost-in-transition

So apparently the "smooth transition" Gleich talked about yesterday involved firing a bunch of people.

Bill Crawford will always be the voice of Laker Hockey to me, but I don't have a lot of faith that we will see Sovereign Communications be invigorated by this. They are now the only show in town and can dictate their terms to Laker athletics. Why strive to be better when there is now no other alternative?

I thought Paul did a pretty good job behind the mic, and I enjoyed listening to the games he called. He's no Bill Crawford, but I enjoyed listening and didn't have the problems some seemed to have with him. I'll also miss listening to him and Scott on the Morning Show podcast.

As an out of town fan I am a little bit nervous that the 1400 website (which yesterday was a clearinghouse of local information) has already reverted to the basically worthless format of the rest of the Sovereign Comms websites. 2 links to CBS news stories. gee, thanks! I'll give them a few weeks and see how the rest of the online stuff goes before I start complaining. (though as Smartaxe mentioned, complaining or making suggestions to Sovereign about anything is like banging your head against a wall).

Re: Laker Hockey 2009-10

While it will be nice to have Crawford back for a little while, you gotta feel bad for VanWagoner. He did do a pretty good job, such a shame he got caught up in this business crap.

Anyways, this maybe the biggest series for the Lakers since perhaps the late 90s. We need good and loud crowds this weekend more than ever.

Bill - have the Lakers nailed down their goalie recruit for next year?

Sternberg playing lots of minutes for Nepean.

No, I don't think have unless they've got a verbal commitment in the past week or so that hasn't been shown up on the Heisenberg recruits site yet. They will need to bring in two goalies next season. Their #1 goalie will be back (he will be a Senior next season), but their #2 and #3 goalies are Seniors this season. I think they were looking at goalies in either the OJAHL or CCHL recently. I think the situation with Ravn (Ottawa) was pretty iffy due to clearing house issues; he might not be out of the picture, but on the other hand I don't have the impression that they feel they were counting on that working out.
