Re: Laker Hockey 2009-10

I'm not a big fan of his either but really he could have done more.

The problem is he didn't cheer enough this weekend, must have left the pom pons back in the Soo.

I am sure on Monday's Laker Hockey show he will have his usual positive spin on the Lakers, "our" performance and throw Roque some softballs on how "we" played and how "we" can take a lot out of this past weekend. Does the guy actually wear a uniform when he broadcasts!

Re: Laker Hockey 2009-10

rhm was right about how Miami would play. There surely was something else going on last night, almost mystical. Miami shots just seemed to find holes. I think Lake and St. Cloud are as good as any teams in the Goggin this year, something else just lined up against the Lakers last night.

I agree with Rogue that the refs may have over-reacted to the situation a little, but I think pulling BMW so quickly was a mistake. Yes the second goal was soft, but Inglis really struggled. Also, when the stuff happened in the first, I thought it helped Miami. As Rico said, MU was sort of defending its honor. Anyway, I was really inpressed with Lake, even last night. I am not sure how what happened last night happened, but it did, and as your coach said, if that was the way it was supposed to be given everything that happened, that was ok with him. A classy statement really.

Re: Laker Hockey 2009-10

I always hated going to MI because of the fan base. Add Miami to that list now. Miami fans have lowered themselves to the level of MI fans and I didn't think anyone would want to drop that low as a fan but guess what? Miami has.I didn't know if I was at a MI home game or a Miami home game.

From the sounds of the broadcast, it sounded like the Lakers announcer thought both of the 1st two goals were soft. The fact that Roque pulled BMW after the second goal seems to indicate that he thought so too. For the Lakers to have a chance last night, BMW needed to have a strong game. Obviously none of the Lakers goalies had good games last night. After BMW was pulled, I was wondering if Roque would put him back in for the second period; if Miami hadn't scored another two goals in the first period, he may have put BMW back in, but being down 4-0 I think he decided to give him a rest.

Despite the early 2-0 deficit, I thought the 5 minute major on Miami presented an opportunity for the Lakers to get back in the game. But when Barczuk soon after took a Lakers penalty to negate their man advantage, I think that did them in. Barczuk is a high energy guy, which Roque likes, but he has a strong tendency to take bad penalties, especially in the offensive end. I think Barczuk has hurt the Lakers more than he's helped them this season. He's got to learn to control his play.

Re: Laker Hockey 2009-10

The soon to be 10th place Lakers took it on the chin this weekend. I am curious what the positive spin on the radio tonight? Were the Lakers right there? Did they get a couple late goals to get their confidence back up? I am sure VanWaggonor has them winning the last six games, finishing 2nd place and the national championship because of this loss giving up 10 goals. Paging Bill Crawford and Francis Anzalone...paging Bill Crawford and Francis Anzalone!

The Truth Is Out There...

IMO you should be proud of your guys. They never gave up and down 8-1 they came out and won the third period. I will second redeagle's comment, I was really impressed with the talent level on the lakers. It was extremely emotional throughout the building last night and the guys showed it on the ice. Your fan base is a class act and I enjoy chatting with you guys, your coach is one of the class acts in the country as well. Couldn't be more impressed with your program and where they are right now. Keep your heads up guys, we will try and help down the road if we can but I think you will do your part as well.

I would like to know why you are making this statement? If you are referring to the student section, yes the student section can be pretty vicious (being a part of it I know), but isn't that the point of a student section. To support your team and try to get into the mind of the other team to give your team the biggest home ice advantage as possible? I'm not sure what the student section looks like at at Lake Superior, but I'm sure they aren't angels themselves. So basically I guess I just don't understand why you are saying this?

Re: Laker Hockey 2009-10

I wasn't sitting in the student section and I have been to games at MI many times over and the unending attacks on the other team even when the game has been over long before the final buzzer and the relentless putting down of players who no longer can win the game or have been totally beaten on the ice and the verbal screams never cease. I thought this was a MI classless act by students and fans who seem only happy when verbally calling out players to let them know how bad their team is even when that team has been totally dis-mantled. I found out Miami seems to enjoy the same verbal asaults that MI fans and student s do.

You perhaps havent been to a Northern or LSSU game. The fans are generally pleasant

As a current Miami student, I don't know how to react to this. Granted, last night was a very emotional environment, but the student section did nothing unusual or extraordinary that I saw. We're loud, boisterous, and proud of it. Our job is to enhance our home ice advantage. If it bothers the players as much as it bothers you, then good. Is that classless? Perhaps, but I highly doubt anything will change.

Come on sm2pk are you serious? It is a hockey game. Verbal banter is a given. Like I said before, creating home ice advantage is huge and that includes getting into the minds of the opposing team. I guess I just don't understand why this bothers you so much. Its all in good fun.

Very well stated. I just thought this was a given for any student section.

sm2pk,

I'm sorry you felt that the conduct of Miami fans was somehow out of line, but frankly I don't think any self-respecting student section or fan base would or should lighten up on an opponent because of the way the game is going, for good or bad. To me, that would be equivalent to saying that if a team is winning a game by a safe margin, they should purposely lighten up in order to give the opponent a better chance.

The conduct of a fan base after the game has ended, however, is how I would base my judgment. From my personal (albeit, biased) experiences, Miami fans are, by and large, very gracious to visiting teams and fans after the game has ended, regardless of the outcome. I have heard this same view expressed time and again by visiting fans who have made the trek to Oxford.

If there were any a**holes who ran their mouths at Laker fans or team members after the game, then I would certainly ask that you reserve passing a blanket judgment, because you will find a few of those idiots at every school. However, if you are condemning an entire fan base to the dregs of fandom solely based on the chanting and taunting of the Miami fans during the game, I offer no apologies.

A student section chanting and yelling at players/staff is part of the game. The fact is, this isn't something specific to a few programs or DI hockey in general. It's just amplified when you have 1000+ participating. These guys have seen it all through minor hockey, and probably on a more personal level. It's something you learn to play through, or laugh off. If you can't, you're not helping yourself or your team.

Calling it classless is being fairly oblivious to sporting events in today's society where large populations of 30-and-under gather. Classless is hurling taunts and other personal attacks at patrons who have paid to attend the game. Honestly, I thought that would be your gripe here, which I would have agreed with.

If it bothers the players as much as it bothers you, then good.

If you're in their head, they're not focused on the game. More power to you.

Re: Laker Hockey 2009-10

Also very well stated RedHawkBandMan. Like I said time and time again creating home ice advantage during the game is huge and I think our student section does a great job of that.

Re: Laker Hockey 2009-10

Heh, touche BandMan ;) It happens everywhere, but yes, I know some reputations suck, and try to be the one who might change a perception or two pre or post-game.

Re: Laker Hockey 2009-10

Taunting the opposing players is all part of the game, until it crosses the line into singling out a particular palyer with profanity or personal attack. You can imagine that with a name like "Frick", my sons and I have had our share of comments in bad choice. Once vulgarity reaches the level that it can be heard on TV or radio broadcasts, it reflects poorly on the school and aministrators will attempt to curb it. When parents are seen leaving the arena with small children early in the second period, there are problems.

Re: Laker Hockey 2009-10

Sorry Miami fans but there comes a time when you are leading 8-1 ,9-2 and the game has long been over and you are still screaming out names of players and how they suck, you gone beyond supporting your team on to victory. I wasn't sure if we were at a MI game or a Miami game.

Are we playing in one of those ultra-PC 5 year old soccer leagues now where everybody gets a trophy for losing? I must have missed that announcement from Anastos.
