Incredibly Dull Boring 2022 Pairwise and Tournament Possibilites Thread

Interesting. So let's say Duluth loses twice in OT this week. That puts them at 16-16-4 (1-4 OT). They would need to win their First Round series to get in.

Does the NCHC still have the Third Place Game? If so, and presuming Duluth takes three games to win their series, they would need to win at least one game at the Frozen Faceoff.

Imagine if they lost the Semi and then lost the Third Place Game in OT. They would be 18-19-4 and miss the NCAAs. But in reality they would be 17-14-4, with a 1-5 3x3 OT record.

Of course, this is an extreme hypothetical (and assuming that the CHN app has their correct record). But it shows one of the (many?) flaws with counting 3x3 OT wins/losses the same as regulation wins/losses.

The consolation game is gone.

I don't have clarification on any difference between regular season 3x3 overtime wins/losses compared to postseason 5x5 overtime wins/losses. Since the gimmick is done for the season after next weekend, does the 55-45 split go away too?

As mentioned above, you cannot host on campus. Who is left in Minnesota to bid?

Well, Duluth at Amsoil. St Cloud at the Nat'l Hockey Center. Mankato at Verizon Center.

All of these would be more or less guaranteed sellouts. Why do these places not bid? Because you have to give all the money to the NCAA. It's that simple.

Same in Michigan or Wisconsin.... Who could reasonably bid? Well, Resch Center in Greeny Bay. Van Andel in Grand Rapids. These have hosted before. The fact that they are NOT hosting now, says a lot about the $$ aspect of hosting a regional.

To be honest, I have no idea why Loveland and Allentown bid.

Can you clarify? The teams you listed as possible hosts would be hosting at their home arenas - are they not on campus? I'm not sure the Ralph is on the UND campus - this might have changed recently.
As far as Loveland bidding, I think it's a case of DU trying to get some fans to actually go to the games. I think they could get fans to drive 50 miles. Maybe. Allentown? No idea.

the Resch Center has a long term contract for Wisconsin high school basketball & volleyball tournaments. They won’t be bidding on college hockey regionals any time soon.

REA is on campus. I'm not sure if the university owns the building - i think not. But it is on the campus. That's the reason North Dakota has hosted in Fargo and Sioux Falls. They can't bid at the Ralph.

Duluth, St Cloud, and Mankato all play in the rinks between 6500 an 11000 or so, and all are city or county administered and not on campus.

Minnesota's home rink is on campus, so they can't host. And there aren't other good options available in Minneapolis.

But the point is.... Labeling a rink "on campus" doesn't make it any more advantageous to play in than s close by rink. So, typical for the NCAA, they made a dumb rule, and killed the western regional attendance, except when North Dakota hosts.

I'm surprised Omaha wouldn't put in a bid to host a regional at the CHI Health Center, where they use to play before moving to Baxter Arena. I'd think Omaha would be a great regional location.

Actually, having watched North Dakota succesfully host at the Sanford Center in Sioux Falls in few years ago, Omaha jumped in and is now the host school for the next 2 times the regional is played there. This is a good move on the part of Omaha, as the Minnesota schools would all be close....Mankato, St Cloud, Minnesota would be within 4 hours. Duluth and Bemidji further away. North Dakota would be good, too, but isn't in 'favored status' now. I actually hope the Mavericks qualify in these years.

Thanks. UND does not own the Ralph - they take possession in 2030.

Significant games this weekend:
Everything in Hockey East, because a few of the bubble teams are going to be left more or less needing to win the tournament after this week.
Everything in NCHC because of the race for the #1 seeds (that's the DU, WMU and UND series), and for UMD and the .500 rule
Everything in the B10 for the tournament bubble and for Michigan and a #1 (lose the series, and.....?)
But, nothing in ECAC, CCHA or AHA looks really compelling because it is play-in week there

The parley sits quietly in the corner, biding its time...

You and the parley??!?!?!!! So good. Every year about this time....

And, exactly right, the parley (parlay?) will begin to constitute itself this weekend, but as of yet, we have not enough information to discern just who it may be.....

I'm watching Omaha,
and I would expect the strong possibility of an ECAC upset (considering only QU is in tourney position right now makes that likely).
CCHA is unlikely because Minnesota State is by far the class of the field.
Hockey East....possible, but the number of HEA teams on the bubble is so large that if an upset arises, it surely will be from among the bubble, and such a team, winning the conf tourney, would likely reach top 15 status in the PWR...
B10....unlikely because, again, there is a strong line between PSU, MSU and UW.....and the top 4. Running that table is a big ask, and all 4 of the top clubs are more or less PWR safe.

So, at first guess, I would say that the qualifying line is only likely to move to 13 at worst.

Well, we won't have to worry about UMD finishing below .500, as they win tonight in OT.

They are now 17-14-4. The worst they could do is lose tomorrow and get swept in the first round, and finish at 17-17-4.

Interesting piece from tonight is that Ohio State probably has to win tomorrow night at home to Penn State, or they will be out of the NCAAs. That's not assured, but their RPI would take a drop of a little bit, and, given that someone in the HEA has to win the next 2 rounds, it's quite easy to see OSU at 15 or 16 being out.

As for the others....NoDak losing at Omaha drops their RPI. Minnesota is now in even better shape to get a #1. Denver has recovered from last week's loss, so they are sitting well for a #1 also.

I think, perhaps:
Worcester: UMinn, WMich, UMass, Lowell (mostly attendance here, but also this is serpentine)
Albany: Mankato, Qpac, UMD, AIC
Allentown: UMich, SCSU, MTU, OSU
Loveland: Den, NoDak, NoDame, NoEast

Essentially, TiCapNews' bracket except with the Mich/NE game swapped for the Mankato/AIC game. I'm trying to get some fans to Albany. Allentown looks hopeless at this point. Notre Dame is the only school anywhere close, and really, it isn't close.

But, I want to try a more general bracket in a minute, if I can figure out how to do what I want....

Vague predictions:
Allentown: UMich or Mank/NCHC/MTU/HEA or CCT or AHA Champ
Albany: Mank or UMich/Quinn/UMD/AHA champ (for attendance?) or HEA or CCT
Worcester: UMinn/NCHC/HEA/HEA or CCT
Loveland: Den/NCHC/NoDame/OSU

For example, if Clarkson actually qualifies, then they go to Albany, for clear reasons.

Not at all impossible scenario from the B10:
Penn State and Wisconsin win tonight. Minnesota and Penn State win the Semis. Penn State wins the B10.
At the same time, Denver wins the NCHC, with WMU winning their 1/4 series by 2-1.

Resultant PWR: Mankato, Michigan, Denver, Minnesota.
Bottom 4 includes Penn State.

By intraconference rule, and by hosting rule, it would have to be Mankato playing in Allentown.
