Illegal Immigration Pt. III: It's Illegal to be Illegal? Really?

I don't have a problem with this either though this is treading the line. If the student can't understand the teacher, and the class is not an immersion program, then having that teacher in the classroom defeats the point. Though obviously I can see where this can be abused.

I have a problem with this. How else are we going to prepare these kids for college? Where in some classes you're lucky to make out a single word of your professor or TA.

Got to be a middle ground.

Kindergarten teacher who can't speak English = fail.
H.S. physics teacher w/ heavy German accent = just fine.

That's a problem that is, by and large, going away. The Chinese TAs now are a LOT more western and worldly than their compatriots of a decade ago... I saw the switch over from start of grad school to end... kinda freaky where on the one side you saw all the people who fit the stereotype where at the other end you had the types who could be confused with the European students if it weren't for their physical appearances and accents... Indians have a similar phenomenon but they grew up watching American TV like every other nation which has an english speaking element.

I think this is going too far and is only going to reinforce those people who (wrongfully) think AZ is acting racist with all these new laws. Maybe on its own it would garner no real criticism but in combination with the other laws and it doesn't look good. (and remember in todays world perception is reality sadly)

So, if they manage to disqualify a teacher in District A way out in the sticks I wonder which freshly-minted college grad is going to get assigned to that district by the state.

Is the state on the hook for the relocation/living expenses of the replacement, or are they expecting the person to commute?

Re: Illegal Immigration Pt. III: It's Illegal to be Illegal? Really?

Why don't these organizations (cities, countries, etc) just come right out and say it... "We think the police officers who are keeping the streets of Arizona safe are huge racists."

It's weird. I mean, usually, they're pretty open about their contempt for cops.

And finally the Phoenix newspaper does a decent article on how Mexico abuses immigrants passing through to the U.S. Mexico shouldn't throw stones when living in a glass house. Even the craziest immigration advocate I don't think would say that Arizona police will participate in kidnappings of illegals, etc., as has been documented in Mexico!

Great point. We forget sometimes that we're one of at most 35 or 40 countries worldwide where public officials aren't explicitly linked to criminal activity as part of their SOP. Multinationals used to and probably still do have bribery funds for government "paperwork." One of the reasons so many people flee to the US is they can get the fair deal here they don't at home.

Although not going as far as I would go, this is much closer to the point I was trying to make, in the last thread. Of course, since this guy gets paid to write op-ed pieces, and I don't, his is much better written.

That doesn't necessarily follow. :p

It's a tough problem, there are good arguments on both sides, it's ripe for a bipartisan (multipartisan?) solution, and the odds of everybody sitting down and working out an intelligent compromise that addresses the real issues are exactly zero. As much as problems like this hurt individuals and the country as a whole, pols better serve their career interests by taking radical stances and thumping the tub. That's a failure of their leadership in not being responsible and our citizenship in succumbing to, even demanding, their poses.

Huh.

On one hand, you have to wonder why the agent was aiming so high.

But, on the other hand, it isn't specified how far away the agent was from the suspect and, as is noted in the article, its not like it was pebbles that were being thrown at him.

The situation on the border is very difficult. But the kid was 14...if they weren't pebbles, a 30 ft throw would be a challenge.

Why don't these organizations (cities, countries, etc) just come right out and say it... "We think the police officers who are keeping the streets of Arizona safe are huge racists."

They don't because police departments are also coming out against the bill.

Knee jerk reaction: Hey, throw rocks at a border guard, that's what you get.

Further thought: That's really tough, you hate to see it happen, still I'm having trouble mustering a ton of sympathy for the kid.
