Illegal Immigration Pt. III: It's Illegal to be Illegal? Really?

If he was a private and said that about his superior, his *** would be grass.

And things just get worse and worse on the Arizona border, as the Mexican drug cartels are now openly threatening police officers in Arizona who mess with their drug shipments.

And people are now being warned by the federal government to stay out of wildlife refuges in southern Arizona due to border dangers.

Hmmm, I wonder if the Enola Gay is busy?

No different than the 9/11 fund. You take the money or BP screws you over in court for the next 20 years.
There is a huge difference. The 9/11 fund was established by law via Congressional action (the airline bailout) and used taxpayer money. The BP fund was established by no law or judicial decision and was simply demanded by Obama.
There are still to this day folks from the Exxon Valdez disaster who have not gotten their money.
So what? This doesn't justify the money/power grab that Obama has just (sadly successfully) attempted. The court system was designed to deal with this - to settle disputes and to compel the guilty to pay the victimized. If you don't believe in that, then you don't believe in the American system.
People will take the money now. And BP will save money in the long run, that's why they went ahead and set it up.
"People" in this case meaning whoever Obama's appointee decides is deserving - which up until now I thought to be the responsibility of a judge presiding over a trial, but what do I know?
Sound regulating? Surely you jest. The Right who has been in power for years has been eroding it and the left is too incompetent to run it.
Well then we can simply not bother with the costly regulatory structure, wait for the inevitable ****-ups, and file lawsuits so the lawyers get paid. Everyone wins... except whoever happens to be killed by the negligence.

All of Bakunin's points are extremely good, particularly in their implications for whether we govern by process or ad hoc solution. I was behind the escrow fund as a practical solution when it was proposed for all the concerns Scooby cites -- it is extremely difficult to get justice when you fight uphill all the way against wealthy and powerful special interests, particularly when half the time the supposed referee is an active supporter of those interests -- but the more I consider those points and their greater effect, the more I change my opinion.

Tell that to the SCOTUS.

It doesn't matter what I believe. It matters what I know. And I know that the people harmed by this are screwed and the only way they'll get a dime is this way and not through the courts.

Sad, but true.

So, Scooby points out that 20 years later people still haven't gotten justice through the courts and your solution is to use the courts...

"This is an emergency, we can't follow the rule of law." I've heard that somewhere before.

Re: Illegal Immigration Pt. III: It's Illegal to be Illegal? Really?

They're screwed no matter, they'll never get back what they lost.

So instead of helping the people who were screwed once we'll screw them again by not giving them justice. Good idea.

Lack of good options. This town is a political nightmare. The democrats are of the "insane, fix it with government" types, and the republicans in this area tend to be on the Sarah Palin end of the spectrum. Seriously. I'm convinced that a HUGE majority of the people in this town are moderates, yet when it comes time to actually vote for someone, we have clowns on the left of us and jokers to the right.

I was gonna say she looks like she ate all the people who weren't going to vote for her.

Well, she sure as hell didn't eat a salad.

Sure she did, with three helpings of ranch dressing right before she had the Triple Baconator and biggie fries.

And a diet coke.

Re: Illegal Immigration Pt. III: It's Illegal to be Illegal? Really?

Milwaukee's had more that its fair share of off the chart political weirdos over the years. Remember about a decade ago some dude (was he on city council?) wanted to secede from the city and spent a lot of time posing for pictures dressed like Fidel and carrying weapons? Wanted to establish a city within a city, or something. Someone pointed out to him that "whitey" controlled the utilities, and movement ran out of steam. I mean, can you really imagine winter in Milwaukee with no heat, no light and no "Monk?"
