I Think I'll Go For A Walk - Death Pool Thread

Re: I Think I'll Go For A Walk - Death Pool Thread

Two sad stories from the hockey world.

Former NHL coach Wayne Fleming is nearing the end of his battle with cancer.

Considered the glue that brought Canada's four-man coaching staff together for Canada's first hockey gold in 50 years, Fleming is buoyed by support from a hockey community that continues to surround the long-time coach almost two years after brain surgery.

The power of that support was evident earlier this month when more than a dozen members of his immediate and hockey family gathered at his house for an emotional ceremony inducting him into the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame. The private commemoration was held eight months before the annual induction is scheduled to be held in Winnipeg.

And a 9-year old Quebec boy dies on a hockey rink. :(

Municipal workers found the body of a nine-year-old boy on an outdoor ice rink on Saturday, 200 km northeast of Montreal.

Javier Alexis Urquiaga's body was pinned under a hockey net, a witness said.

Pope Bennedict XVI will soon be dead; well, his name at least. First Pope to retire in 600 or more years. I'm not Catholic but it's interesting to follow the comings and goings.
From what I heard, After he retires (Feb. 28), the College of Cardinals will meet shortly thereafter.

This raises some interesting questions which nobody's had to address in centuries. How to address or refer to the former Pope for one. What his role will be. Given his professorial background, I'd imagine he will spend his time writing. And he will stay far away from day to day operations of the Vatican. It will be as if he'd dropped off the face of the earth. How will his death be handled? With a full blown Papal funeral? Or something less? After all, this will be a service for a former
Pontiff, with the current Bishop of Rome in attendance.

The only possibility I've seen proposed thus far is this:

In a sign of just how rare an event this is, church officials aren't sure what the pope will be called after he leaves the office.

One possibility, [Senior Vatican Analyst John Allen] said, is "bishop emeritus of Rome."

How about Pope-X;)

Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger. However, noted canon lawyer Ed Peters gives his interpretation here: http://canonlawblog.wordpress.com/

I believe protocol in the USA says you address an ex President by his former title. Such as Governor Clinton, Governor Bush, Ambassador Bush, etc. There can be only one President at a time.

And, I think the correct term is abdication, not resignation.

They're still referenced as Presidents Clinton, Bush, etc. You reference an elected official by his/her most recent title. If one of them was to take on a new office after the Presidency, then they would be referenced by such title. I know of only two presidents who have taken on new official roles after leaving office, one to become a governor and another became a Supreme Court Justice. There may be more, but I can't recall.

Re: I Think I'll Go For A Walk - Death Pool Thread

We're going to be re-booting the USCHO Death Pool starting March 1st. Many are already aware of it, and a few have participated in it. We had previously had our seasons start/end in the summer, and we weren't seeing much participation. I'm hoping by making this start when the boards should be at their peak viewership, we will get more participation.

The rules are simple. Pick 30 names of CELEBRITIES (and try to make them actual celebrities, it is more fun when the lists are filled with people mostly everyone knows), that you think are going to die in the next year. You get points for every correct pick. Point totals are determined by the person's age (which will be determined by year only, which is a change from past years), if someone turns 80 anytime in 2013, then they're counted as 80 years old, even if they die when they're 79, or possibly 81, if they die in January or February 2014. This makes it much easier to calculate points. To calculate your points, you subtract the persons age from 90, so younger people are worth more. There is also a 50 point bonus if someone you pick dies, and you are the only contestant to pick that person.

Start putting together lists now, and start sending them to me on February 25th. They must be in my inbox by 10AM March 1st.

Eligible picks are (and these aren't set in stone, there are some people that are hard to put into a category):
Movie/TV - Actors, Actresses, Producers, Directors, Reality Stars, Comedians, Hosts, Singers
Politics - National elected officials of the USA, Governors, Supreme Court Justices, Current and Former Presidents/VP, Cabinet Members, Foreign Presidents/Prime Ministers, Royals, Prominent Spouses, High Ranking Military Leaders, Mayors of Large Cities
Sports - Current and Former Players, Coaches, Owners, GM's, Referees, Announcers, Commissioners
Others - Radio Personalities, Writers, CEO's, High Profile Criminals (cannot be on death-row), Religious Leaders, Musicians, Composers, Scientists

I do want to say, that I think we should not allow "-est" people, people that are famous only because they're the oldest person, or the fattest person or the dumbest person.

OK, have at it, and if you know anyone else that would be interested, spread the word.

Former presidents are addressed as "Mr. President," and are referred to in the media as "former presidents." Can you imagine anyone greeting George H.W. Bush with "hello, Mr. Vice President?" One exception was Eisenhower, who wanted to be referred to as "General." After all, the Army had been his whole life, politics was something that came later and only lasted 8 years.

Who was governor after president?

Re: I Think I'll Go For A Walk - Death Pool Thread

Who was governor after president?
i don't think anyone did, John Quincy Adams served in the House and lost s Massachusetts Gubernatorial election. Andrew Johnson served as a US Senator and William Taft was appointed to the Supreme Court.

Re: I Think I'll Go For A Walk - Death Pool Thread

Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) will not run for re-election at 89.

Re: I Think I'll Go For A Walk - Death Pool Thread

Well, if he's 89, buying green bananas is a long-term investment for him. And the doctor might make him pre-pay.
