How much is your most treasured college hockey souvenir worth (actual)?

Re: How much is your most treasured college hockey souvenir worth (actual)?

I have all three goal-scored pucks from a Tech hat-trick, all signed, in a nice glass and wood box with a customized brass plaque. Not worth much, but kind of cool, since Tech gets about 3 hat tricks a decade.

Re: How much is your most treasured college hockey souvenir worth (actual)?

How the hell do you get into the game if you keep all the tickets in the sheet? Do you drag that thing with for every game and have to make sure to not destroy it over the course of an entire season?

edit: ah, you just answered my question!

silly cowboys and their questions!!

Who got the hat-trick?

I ... er, "borrowed" ... one of those light post signs from Denver in '08 which I got signed by the whole BC team + Jerry York. Was offered a couple hundred for it at the time but I couldn't get rid of it.

I also have a jersey signed by the whole 2010 team, which was my senior year. Both of those are pretty special to me.

Collection of pins from the frozen four in St. Paul in '94. My mom and dad were supposed to go but my mom got sick and nine year old me got to go instead.

Got a bunch of them running around like a kid in a candy storm at the hockey-l gathering. I still remember the old guy that gave me a Providence pin. "no one is going to recognize this one!"

Also got to shake Mike Eruzione's hand!

I have a small pailful of jockstraps left on the ice by UND players after losing to Gerbe and BC in the FF semis at the Pepsi Center in 2008. They're definitely game worn but without numbers--just sizes.

Re: How much is your most treasured college hockey souvenir worth (actual)?

Well, you knew it would be a jersey, but I'll go with this mid-70s item.
I acquired this from a BC sports store back in the 1990s, I think maybe the 2nd or 3rd item I ever bought on Ebay.
The only other one I've seen from this era was hanging up at MTU in a display case.
What's it worth? To just another jersey/sports collector, somewhere in the range of $750 - $1000.
To me? Maybe a really nice car or paying off my mortgage would get it away from me.
When the day comes to let my collection go, this will likely be the last to leave.
Go Tech!

No offense meant here, but how exactly are you coming up with the value of this jersey? I realize its game-worn and old at this point but there are autographed game worn jerseys of NHL stars that arent' worth nearly $1,000. I struggle to think a jersey from a niche sport would fetch that price at auction/in store unless you found a rabid Tech fan who wanted it.

A woman at a UND game a few years ago paid, I think, $7000 for a game worn UND TJ Oshie jersey. Well granted this woman was an idiot for paying like three times more than she had to, it shows that it is very possible to get $750-1000 for a MTU jersey from the 70's if you find the right person. And finding that right person isn't as difficult as you think. Older jerseys are worth more because of their scarcity. Sure a current NHL jersey might not go for that much but that is partly because there are so many of them. Again using Oshie as an example, he probably wears 10+ jerseys a year. Then you look at players like Crosby and Ovechkin, they wear even more.

it might depend on what you are calling an NHL star, but an NHL star's jersey is going to be worth at least $1000.

and NHL stars often wear 6-12 different HOME jerseys per season... gretzky wore a different one every shift during his final season (if I recall correctly).

and... usually college players only wear 2 or 3 different jerseys for their entire college carreer (depending on whether the team had a third jersey).
there are only 2 - 4 Paul Kariya, game worn jerseys out there... I am pretty sure there is a different home jersey with the C on it than the one he wore his freshman season.. I am not sure there are 2 away jerseys from the 2 different seasons.

so it boils down to scarcity. I will be that there are at least 100 game worn Paul Kariya NHL jerseys out there, and one from his rookie year will sell for over $5k while a predator jersey will still sell for over $2k.

His ONLY Maine jersey to be sold, I believe sold for $7500.
I do not know where the other ones are or whether they were sold.

Phil Kessel autographed Wisconsin jersey.

Yep.

I have no idea how to react to this.

Assuming I react at all...

Should I be disgusted? Angry? Should I laugh?

Should I appreciate the irony? (this!)

Does not compute! Does not compute! Does not compute! Does not compute! Does not compute! Does not compute!

:eek::eek::eek::eek:

What should I do?

Which reminds me of this:

As a point of reference, it was before he went to Minnesota.

I was figuring that. Would have been pretty ballsy for you to ask him, AND for him to sign it, after that ship sailed (sank :D).

Probably the only one in existence. Cool!

I have a hockey stick autographed by the 1981 NCAA champion Badgers, including Badger Bob :) The stick has sentimental value as well, it belonged to my brother who was killed by a drunk driver in March of that year.:(

I have the original banner hung in the Joyce Center celebrating the first thing Notre Dame ever won that mattered that I actually witnessed, the 2007 CCHA Mason Cup. (they won the CCHA regular season championship that year in Alaska) I also have Brett Lebda's stick from his final game in South Bend. Thankfully it is too small for me to use when I play, because occasionally I think of using it. I put no monetary value on either, but a great deal of sentimental value. My guess is neither is "worth" much in spendable dollars.

No problem, it can be a shock to those that are new to the hobby of collecting game used items. Several years ago I was offered more than $1000 for that same jersey from another college collector, and they were not even a Tech fan or alumni. Obviously I turned it down because the jersey is still in my collection. One common misconception is autographs - to a true sports collector they actually devalue the jersey and you lose about 80% of your potential buyers when the jersey is signed. Most collectors want it to remain "as used" on the ice. Another way to drop the value would be to add a patch that doesn't belong or restore a name to the back that wasn't on the jersey when it was sold.

I've been collecting for about 15 years, and in general I've found the college game worn hobby to be much more exciting and rewarding. It all comes down to supply and demand. Even for the best players in the NHL if I have the money, I promise you I can buy one of their jerseys within six months and most I could by tomorrow because they are everywhere. The only tough part is figure out who sells that team's jerseys. About 60% of the NHL teams are sold through a single company in NJ. The other 40% sell team direct. You don't have that luxury with most college programs. There are a handful that do public auctions every year, Michigan for example, but most other teams you need to know someone on the inside or know someone who does or you will never have a chance at a jersey unless they turn up on Ebay second hand.

A good example is American International. A program most of us wouldn't think twice about, but just try and get one of their jerseys from ANY player from ANY year. It is darn near impossible and it was almost a decade before I got my first one. The same goes for Army. The supply is almost zero and the demand is very high. A Zack Parise UND jersey recently changed hands between two friends of mine and the selling price was over $5k. You can find one of Zack's NHL jerseys for well under $1k, but there are literally hundreds of them out there.

I love the college part of collecting because it has the thrill of the chase. It can take a long time to get what you want and a lot of effort and sometimes you can't even get it at all. (Still looking for a modern AIC jersey!) The NHL and other pro leagues are more along the lines of "get out your credit card and tell us how many you want..."

2009 Miami Frozen Four gamer. Obviously the program's first FF, and home white so it's not from THAT game.

No clue what the market value is, but it would take turning one serious profit to get it out of my hands.

Re: How much is your most treasured college hockey souvenir worth (actual)?

I got bored over the lunch hour and spent 20 minutes on the internet. In that time I found NHL game worn jerseys offered for sale worn by 7 of last years top 10 NHL scorers and 13 of the all-time top 20 NHL scorers. Now try to find even one jersey of ANY of these players from their days before the NHL and you'll start to understand the supply demand of college / minor league game worn jerseys. Gretzky is not hard to find either, but they are rarely offered for sale at a fixed price. However take part in nearly any major online auction and you are bound to see at least one available and expect to pay $50k - $75k depending on the team and year it was worn.
