How much is your most treasured college hockey souvenir worth (actual)?

Re: How much is your most treasured college hockey souvenir worth (actual)?

Hoosier. I think it is you who is lost. I don't expect other fan bases to agree with me.

But when I am debating with someone about why I think our pre-NCAA titles should count, or about why I think the uniqueness of our recruiting practices and history of winning titles with in-state players should factor into a program's greatness, I do expect members of my own fanbase to not attack me as being too provincial.

The whole "Hate on Dubbs" thing started with things as trivial as that. Sure, as people began throwing more and more insults at me I have pushed a few buttons too, but I think I've taken FAR more abuse than I've dished out.

Re: How much is your most treasured college hockey souvenir worth (actual)?

Yes, all of this that you say is OKAY to have as an opinion, but again, this is not what you have done on this board. And that is what the vast majority of people on here are saying. Scooby, Slappy, me, and other Minnesota fans agree that Minnesota high school hockey is an awesome phenomenon to behold, but if you are unable to comprehend that someone from Massachusetts, Maine, North Dakota, etc., disagrees with you on that, that is where the problem is.

No, I would say that everyone, everywhere agrees that your high school tournament is really cool. We just don't agree that it makes Minnesotans the master race like Doug here wants us to.

Hoosier - I'm not talking about lately. I'm talking about when the hate on me first began. Since then, things have gotten out of control.

Again, putting words in my mouth. Exactly how this all began.

Must spread rep Slap Shot...

Anybody want to sign a petition? This has gotten BEYOND old. This thread is not a Game thread.

Re: How much is your most treasured college hockey souvenir worth (actual)?

I have never said people can't disagree with me. I think I am usually the one who people are trying to strip of an opinion.

Again, being provincial doesn't mean I think people have to agree with me. It means I think Minnesota hockey is better than any other hockey. People are free to disagree if they want.

Thanks, Gurt. You're a true hockey fan unlike ignore-boy. I have plenty of MN related stuff, but most of it is actually at the cabin (the only place I really have a man-cave) and I thought I'd go in a different direction by showing something that would probably be appreciated by wider variety of fans. I don't begrudge anyone for loving "their" team in the least but I love, love hockey and that will never be limited to MN.

Not that it matters, but I posted here a few years back about how when my father was very, very sick a neighborhood friend's father took it upon himself in the early 70's to take me to dozens of Gophers FB, BB and HKY games over the course of 3 seasons. It not only proved to be extremely therapeutic for a kid my age dealing with the thought of your dad dying, but made me the Gophers fan I've been ever since. I've lived and died with the Maroon and Gold for nearly 40 years. Love them. LOVE THEM. But it will never, ever be at the expense of my total appreciation for sports themselves, the participants, coaches and fans no matter the program. I love giving crap to rival fans, but in my heart the only difference is the program they support.

Why the hell should I not appreciate you or Dirty for instance loving your programs? College hockey is the sport above all and it wouldn't exist without you all. I have laughed, cried and virtually died with the Gophers for all these years and will until I can't any longer, but I support your love of the game every bit as my own even if you cheer for those godawful colors and goons on skates. I want the Gophers to pound BC this year but who can't recognize that program's success and wonderful coaching? Who can't love the Miracle on Ice as a MN hockey fan and still support what Johnson, Craig, Eruzione and Morrow meant to the team? Does it mean I don't love Broten, Buzzy or Brooks?

I loved growing up playing on ponds and outdoor rinks. I loved idolizing the MN kis that played in the Minnesota state tourament and think it's one of the greatest sporting spectacles anywhere on the planet, but does it mean what goes on in WI, NY or MI any less significant? Does it mean the kids and parents that dream of the NHL (or hell, just making it to the next game) are any less meaningful because they don't play in my favorite state?

What fans (I use that term looesely) like JDUBBS don't recognize is that you can support your team without fail but do so without disparaging others. Give them crap, rip them within reason and boast all you want, but there's a limit. This is a community and it deserves better than what JDUBBS brings to the table, our differences aside. Support your team, love them and sure snicker when your rival loses, but in the end rise above it all and love the game more than anything else.

I am pretty sure Doug Woog would understand everything I've said here. He never won the big one, but he LOVES college hockey and bleeds Maroon and Gold and the M, but he'll be the first to show appreciation for an opponent's accomplishments becuase he understands that the game itself is far more important than any one coach, player, state or program. God Bless the USCHO community and hockey in all.

This. I've only been to one MN road game (at SCSU years ago, before I was part of this board). However, I have gone to a few games not involving MN (and some not even involving Tech!), and have planned at least one of those this year, as well. Why? The sport. The fans. Doesn't mean I'm not a total homer. Just means that I love the sport as much as my team.

Is it me or the nice buzz I have, but reading these last few pages is really confusing. There must be some missing or deleted posts, or maybe Dubbs was arguing with himself, either way it's pretty **** funny.

My most treasured: John Scott scored puck. Yeah baby!!! It's not like it happened often...

Re: How much is your most treasured college hockey souvenir worth (actual)?

Back in '97 my Dad framed the front page of the Grand Forks Herald the day after UND won their title, along with a program signed by the entire team. I also have a puck signed by David Hoogsteen, the 5' 8" winger who won the WCHA Tournament MVP in 1997 and scored 2 goals in the NCAA title game that year. Neither are worth anything, but that's not why I've hung onto them.

Re: How much is your most treasured college hockey souvenir worth (actual)?

I ducked a puck that Gretzky had aimed straight at my head. I'm sure it is the most prized piece of hockey memorabilia in the guy in the row behind me's collection. Because I was weak. Should've taken it in the teeth.

My college hockey treasures are divided amongst a long stream of ex-girlfriends, fiances, etc. I've never been hit by a puck or a stick that I got to keep for myself.

I still enjoy the front page of the Gazette from the day after CC won the McNaughton in 1994, and the program from the last game there. Worst to first. End of CC's dark days. End of the Broadmoor on the horizon (and the last game the next week). Chatting with the players, especially Shawn Reid after the game (the glass at the Broadmoor was low, so we could do that...and back then, when at times there were only 500 folks in the stands, the players knew the regulars). Good memories of that season. And the WCHA program from the next season with the team picture on the back.

I still have all the newspaper articles and photos of the world arena under construction. For a while there, we thought the whole CC program was a goner without a new arena to play in.

Thanks for this post Slap...one of the absolute best I've ever seen from you. I had a similar experience as a kid with a friend's father constantly taking me to hockey practices and games (in all kinds of nasty weather too) and growing up in St. Paul I practically lived in my skates. To this day, I'll never forget what he did for me. I've since never hesitated to take a kid to see a college hockey game (especially the Gophers) and buy them stuff including a souvenir of their choice. It's a memory they won't forget for a lifetime. :)

Definitely! It was really cool to see my 6 year old react to meet Rau, easily his fav player. I gave hima couple pucks to get signed by whoever he wanted at skate with the Gophers. He picked Patterson and Rau and talks about it constantly. Even watches the 2003 video he won at a game there. Fun to see him so excited about something years before he was born.

I've got the set of 1997 Gopher cards given out at the game back in the day. Also got a Kessel USA signed puck, and I found an puck for the Minnesota Moose. Not worth anything but fun to hang onto. Just wish I could find a puck for the old Twin Cities Vulcans. Don't know if they ever made any though.
