Hockey East Tourney Thread - 2010

Re: Hockey East Tourney Thread - 2010

I wouldn't want to see the tournament expanded unless the league grows to 9 or 10 teams.

Why not? So I guess the main question is whether these 1 vs. 8 and 2 vs. 7 best-of-three series are actually good for the league & fans. I think in the first couple years the ECAC had these playoffs (when the league had 9 teams), these were about as interesting as the Olympic preliminary round (ouch). But I think now they're generally good for the league.

The WCHA is probably the better point of comparison though. Last year none of the quarterfinals series were particularly enticing. The single-elim format was more interesting, but it meant too many teams in one location. I recall Shannon Miller was against the idea of playoff expansion. I can see both sides of it.

Re: Hockey East Tourney Thread - 2010

Which reminds me -- surely another reason why Hockey East is fine with the single-elim quarterfinal format for now is that the teams are closer together. With the ECAC/WCHA, I think it makes a lot more sense to send teams all over the place for a quarterfinal round if they're playing more than one game in a weekend.

When the WCHA first started, the 2 vs 7 (1 got a bye) game had no drama beyond whether the #7 seed could get as many SOG as the #2 seed got goals. The lower teams just couldn't skate with the better team. Now, even if an upset is very, very unlikely, all I've ever heard from the lower seeds is that they are happy for the opportunity to extend their season. And I've never heard any of the players on the top teams complain about it either. Players just want to play, so giving them more opportunities to do so is a good idea. I think Joe may have felt differently this year had BC wound up 7th, because it is nice to get to watch those seniors one last time.

Re: Hockey East Tourney Thread - 2010

Disagree.

Rooting for BC to finish in the top 6 actually made the regular season interesting/meaningful.

I don't think every team in the league should make the playoffs. Why have a regular season?

As long as there are only 6 competitive teams in HE, I'd still rather see the playoffs go back to top 4.

Re: Hockey East Tourney Thread - 2010

Anyway, back to the present.

UConn leads NU 4-1. Looks like Leah got the start over Flo, was pulled after 7 min, giving 3 goals in 3 minutes, and Schelling's gone the rest of the way.

Tough for her to come back in such a high-pressure situation, and create a tough decison for the coaching staff. I really wish that series was a best-of-three.

If this score holds, Northeastern might still make the NCAA tourney if Quinnipiac loses to RPI tomorrow (I'm not sure of that though -- I think so since Northeastern is ahead now), Harvard or Clarkson wins the ECAC, and UNH or UConn wins Hockey East. They may also need Providence to lose their semifinal.

EDIT: ok, based on the PWR, Northeastern doesn't need Providence to lose their semifinal, just lose at some point. It's an awkward situation. Northeastern loses the comparison to Providence, but wins against Quinnipiac and Cornell, both of which Providence loses. I don't think any tournament results are going to change that.

Was at the game today, and the goals were a result of A) missed coverage, leaving a player WIDE open and unchecked on the backdoor x 2 and B) a textbook tip on a solid first shot. NU didn't have any offense, and as stated, hurt defensively. Spoke to Julia Marty. She will miss whatever post-season opportunities may await with a sprained PCL suffered in the Olympics.

Re: Hockey East Tourney Thread - 2010

Obviously I am disappointed with today's result, but I can't and won't second guess the coaches' decision to start Sulyma. She was coming off back-to-back shutouts against UConn and deserved the start, and this is just how the chips fall sometimes. Despite the outcome, she should feel proud about all she has accomplished this season, setting some program records along the way. The whole team should feel proud as well. It was a remarkable season (if it turns out to be the end now), and the fact that they are in the discussion for an at-large is more than I could have expected this season. Again, it's too bad NU didn't bring it today, but put it in the experience book. The Huskies went from 8 games under .500 to 8 games over. :)

Re: Hockey East Tourney Thread - 2010

Providence
UConn
(presumably at 12 PM)

UNH
BU
(presumably at 3 PM)

Go Friars!

Re: Hockey East Tourney Thread - 2010

I'm strongly considering making the trip down to Schneider to watch UNH pound on BU and UCan't

Re: Hockey East Tourney Thread - 2010

Any guesses on the end of the season awards? (I tried to piece together a list from previous years)

My thoughts

I might go down to the final. Haven't decided yet.

Providence's arena is free for women's hockey, correct?

Go Friars.

No, not any more. And this is a Hockey East even anyway. Weather looks good, so we should be tailgating though.

Re: Hockey East Tourney Thread - 2010

I believe the tourney is free for students of the competing teams. I think you show your student id at the ticket office. $5 per day for most others (with the exception of kids, seniors and groups of ten or more)

There is also Best Defensive Forward
I don't know what criteria they use to determine the winner, so I took a quick look at +/- in league play. Interesting to note that BC is the only team in the league that can "boast" every player as a -

Paton +19
Long +18
Anderson +16
Stathopulous +14
Binning +12
Berman +11
Wallace +11
Rigano +9
