Hockey East 2010-2011

Re: Hockey East 2010-2011

1. BC: If there are no surprise early departures, no key injuries and no post-championship hangover, they should win the HE regular season easily. They could be good enough to win 20+ HE games.
----------
2. Maine: I think there's a sizeable gap between BC & Maine, but Maine has a slight edge over the middle of the pack in HE.
----------
3 - 7: Some combo of BU, UNH, UVM, Merrimack, Northeastern. I think BU and UNH are most likely to earn the last 2 home ice spots. However, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if Merrimack and/or NU ended with home ice.
----------
8 - 10: Lowell, Providence and UMASS (not necessarily in that order). Lowell and UMASS enter full rebuilding mode, whereas PC may steal a couple of games simply b/c of Beaudry.

I reserve the right to change this prediction at any time between now and October (and obviously I'll make an official prediction on the blog probably around the first week of Oct).

1) BC
2) Maine
3) BU
4) UNH
5) Merrimack
6) UVM
7) NU
8) UML
9) PC
10) UMass

Re: Hockey East 2010-2011

it just seems pretty apparent that barring unforeseen losses of players, BC is the class of the league and probably NCAA next year.

it also seems reasonable to assume that Maine, given some decent goaltending and the return of the probable Hobey Baker winner, should be second and get into the NCAAs.

it seems likely that PC and UMA are going to perform poorly. I for one think that PC will finish ninth, but its kinda wishful thinking.

the 3-8th teams have arguments in favor and against. I don't see Northeastern doing much to improve so they default to 7th, ahead of a young-ish Lowell team. My guess, just to bring this post in for a landing: UNH 3rd, Vermont 4th, BU 5th, the Mack 6th-- but the Mack could be better than that by a ways and Vermont is trying to win an award for inconsistency. Wondering if Coach Parker has had it for a career. Oh, well, I have thought that before ;)

Decent goaltending? Is Darling coming back?

I thought Nyquist was already coming back for sure, hasn't he stated that?

I cud be wrong, but I think he stated the return of the probable Hobey winner not the probable return of the Hobey winner.....detailz:p

It is unknown at this point what the status of Darling will be. They will have Sirman coming back and have a Freshman coming in. Really up in the air as to how the goaltending will be.

Nyquist has stated he is coming back.

Re: Hockey East 2010-2011

Goaltending is going to be the biggest question mark for most of the teams next year.

Darling is gone (yes?) at Maine
Foster is gone at UNH, and DiGirolomo is atrocious
Hutton and Hamilton are gone at UML... 3 unproven freshmen/sophomore
Dainton* imploded at the end of last year
Can Beaudry handle a full season?
Millan imploded all of last season
Can Canata carry the load @ MC?

UVM, NU, and BC seem to be the only 3 who are comfortable in net. Now that's not to say those are going to be your top 3. I think BC is your clear favorite. Maine, UVM, NU, and BU are probably going to finish 2-5 in some order, and then it's a crapshoot between MC, UML, UMass, PC, and UNH (UNH less so than the other 4) for the rear of the league.

On that note, my full predictions:

BC
Maine
UVM
NU
BU
UNH
MC
UML
PC
UMass

Re: Hockey East 2010-2011

I have to assume that ME's season will sink or swim based on goaltending. Nyquist is awesome, but he can do only so much.

If Darling is back and focused I think ME is easily in the second spot. If not, it could be a rough season and end up more in the 4-5 spot.

One word of caution to the Maine fans though : UML

Ok, one acronym of caution.......

But for the record, I like ME and expect them to be in the top 3 next year.

Great post. Very interesting to look at. Even NU was worried about their goalie bolting on them.

As for UNH - their goalies are like their teams in the regular season, always better than we expect. A few years ago Foster was barely playing and he got some minutes and I thought he was terrible. He turned out ok after Regan was done. We'll have to wait and see on this one.

Strangely, BC is loaded at goaltending (and all the other positions too) like we haven't seen in a long time with Muse, Milner, and Billett.

I would say PC is comfortable in net, too. Beaudry was without question one of the best goalies in the league last year. I'm not sure why you're worried about him handling a full season -- he was a full-time starter last year.

I also think you're severely underestimating Merrimack if you're grouping them in with UML, UMass and PC.
