Geoffrion certainly made a statement for his inclusion in the Hat Trick!
(In case you missed it on the ESPN broadcasts, he is related to Boom Boom. ;) )

I'm hoping Cheverie still makes it. His last 3 games have been less than great. Unfortunately the Pioneers flat footed play in the Final 5, didn't give him much of a chance. (God, I hate to say that.) Against RIT, he allowed only 2 goals. TYhe first caused by a massive defensive breakdown and the 2nd relentless power play pressure. He still made 23 saves. He has had a great season and won more than a few games for DU. I'm also hoping he'll be back for his senior year at DU. Hopefully the two things won't be mutually exclusive.

Smith, Nyquist, Butler all have a legitimate chance. Haven't seen Nyquist, Butler looked good in the 1st round, but Geoffrion took the spotlight away from Smith in the West Regionals.

I'm just giving blue a hard time for making the same post <s>twice</s> three times now. Geoffrion's a great player, no doubt.

There's a difference between the tournament MVP and the Hobey Baker that I think some folks are forgetting.

As for Nyquist,since blue has singled him out for some reason, the argument would be to look at the last couple years. Maine's offense hasn't been mediocre. It's been terrible. This year, it was one of the best (power play *was* the best). That isn't all because of Nyquist, but a lot of it is. Maine went from being one of the most impotent teams in the sport to battling BC to a 7-6 OT loss for the conference title, mainly because for the first time in years Maine was dangerous offensively.

I don't think the kid's a lock. There are lots of good finalists, and overall point total isn't everything. But Nyquist's definitely up there.

I would go with Scrivens,Butler and Smith. I would say that it is up in the air to who wins it between Butler and Smith and can't see Scrivens with any chance at all.

I think they do. Their program is like a UNH of the ECAC. They should apologize to their fans and their conference for being such a disgusting mess on Friday night. I think maybe Schaeffer might want to stop playing this crappy defensive hockey style that almost never wins titles in the NCAAs. He's an Ivy league version of Dick Umile.

I was there. Very entertaining and a very impressive effort by Yale. Did it reverse the efforts of the abysmal effort by the Big Red, especially in hindsight of UNH's demolition at the hands of RIT? Not completely. Tonight would fully reverse the damage and maybe put them on the positive side.

We'll see what they can do today. BC may be ripe for the picking as well, but York is a tough one to beat in the regionals (I'm surprised you haven't reminded us of Cornell's biggest win in the last 20 years, a regional final win over BC. chuckle chuckle chuckle).

to quantify these sentiments about nyquist... 2007-2008 season, maine scored 86 goals. 2008-2009 season, maine scored 77 goals. 2009-2010 season, nyquist figured in 61 goals (maine scored 143).

Disclaimer: I've never seen the kid play, except this one example.

All I've seen of Geoffrion made me want to vomit in my mouth. I'm sure he's a great goal scorer, but in the Wisco game against UVM, I watched him cross check a player from behind into the boards; the UVM player was very slow to get up. A clear penalty, which was called.

What disgusted me about this so-called Hobey candidate (and please remember, it's not just about points, it's about off-ice leadershhip, class, etc) was his subsequent argument with the ref about the call. He then got into the box, spoke to the box judge, looked at the UVM guy, and started laughing.

Hits are part of the game; behavior like that has no place in a sporting event, anywhere, at any level. His total lack of sportsmanship was egregious -- when a player is injured on the ice, at least have the respect to keep your trap shut until he's back on his feet -- especially if you're the one who put him there.

Do you know for sure he was making fun of the kid on the ice? I saw it as well (through admittedly cardinal and white colored glasses), and thought he could have been joking around about anything.

I think in my head I value goals as a being more important than total points. Since Nyquist has a huge number for assists as opposed to goals, I would put guys like Butler, Geoffrion and Polacek ahead of him.

You're right, I don't know for sure -- so let's give him the benefit of the doubt, and say he wasn't. Maybe the goal judge let off a "that's what she said."

I will say the group of us at the bar saw the hit from different spots (in that we weren't able to talk about it right away). As we reconvened over Jack Daniels galore, we all had the same impression; that guys a Hobey finalist? Like I said, it's the only time I've ever watched him play. I was actually pleased that game was on, because I said to my wife, "watch for Geffrion, he's a Hobey kid, I want to see what he looks like." It just left a bad impression.

I'm sure that if he is elected to the Hobey Hat Trick, the voters will have a much larger sample size than we did . . .
