Got Snow?

Re: Got Snow?

Put more clothes on if you're worried about the cold.

I agree everyone is overrated but man does that thing look awesome on the radar.
Thanks, mom, I couldn't figure that one out on my own.

Re: Got Snow?

not alot of snow overnight. maybe 4-5 inches? guessing because the wind is howling. once the mister gets coffeed up he'll venture out to plow.

Re: Got Snow?

My car had lots of snow on it this morning! Looked on the NWS site and Marquette has had 7.5 inches in 12 hours, 8.8 in a 24 hour period. There is a nice heavy band set up due to a NE wind off the lake that is right over Marquette and its really moving anywhere fast. Negaunee, a "Suburb" of Marquette is prob going end up with 20-30 inches due to up-sloping.

The dry slot looks like its going to stay south of the U.P. The official forecast calls for 5-8 inches today and 2 to 4 tonight.

Re: Got Snow?

Pathetic. Everyone's discussing this like it's the storm of the century.

It's an itty bitty storm, the first one of the season.

The weathermen who aggregately are not very good at their jobs love you people for hyping them up. Relax... it's just some snow... this thread is pretty insulting to anyone living north of Maryland and/or Missouri :)

Seriously - what a lame discussion about a lame storm....

Well, the thread was a general winter-weather-discussion thread. We used to do this in the "Hey, Duluth/Superior..." thread, but this year it's here. And, there is a certain amount of excitement for the first storm of the year, so let us have our moment. The bulk of us in here are Yoopers and we don't have much else for excitement. ;)

Actually, Ishpeming, Negaunee, and Marquette are the only cities in Marquette county. So it's not a suburb. :p

We got about 8" last night at my house in Ishpeming and it's still coming down.

It's a translation/explanation for those not familiar to the area. Why are you so d*mn argumentative all the time?

Actually that was more of an informational post. The more you know and all that.

Harvey would best represent the "Suburb" of Marquette.

A larger scale might equate Negaunee:Marquette as:
Kitchner:Toronto
Rochester:Buffalo
Bay Shore:Brooklyn
Wilmington:Philly

And I believe you were looking for this logo Foxton:

Re: Got Snow?

Picked up a pretty big and fast acting band here in Gloversville this morning (45 minutes west of Albany)

We've got atleast 6-8 inches and will probably be looking at a foot by noon if this keeps up.

All the local schools are closed. I need to call Dolgeville to see if they cancelled their volleyball game tonight or I'm going to have to drive 30-45 minutes in this crap to cover the game for my newspaper!:(

What a great first week....First assignment I had to drive to a podunk town (Wells) with no cell phone service and a gym that was small enough where they didnt have a full three point line. New York State Class D basketball at its finest. The ENTIRE district enrollment K-12 was 138 kids. My graduating class was 400.

Negaunee is only 12.4 miles from Marquette.
Rochester is 73 miles from Buffalo. Not sure how that equates

Re: Got Snow?

We've got some snow, but it's going to turn to rain this afternoon so by the time it finishes we might have two inches of slush. I hate that. The real problem is the wind. Supposed to gust to 60mph this afternoon.

Re: Got Snow?

got (white) slush. and a broken snowblower. fun times!!

i'd rather have actual snow every day than 5-6 inches of slush even one day.

Spray the intake and blades with Pam if you can get it going. It will help it from sticking and getting clogged.

Seconded.

And the mice got into our snowblower this year - the entire engine shroud was filled with dry grass, and the ignition wire was chewed in half. Lucky Dad checked it before today.

Re: Got Snow?

I should specify that I broke the snowblower today, and it was the shear pins, but I can't get the old ones out, so can't get the new ones in. I did get almost everything done, except the 2 feet of icy slush at the bottom of the driveway (which I shoveled), and of course, the slush that has fallen since 7:30 (which I GET to shovel later!!). Someone more mechanically inclined (read: at all) is going to check it out in the next few days. but the Pam is excellent advice. :)

10+ inches with snow drifts of 4-5 feet, 20 mph winds with gusts up to 40, and a windchill of 15-20 below.

Yeah, I've been through worse, but not since high school (Dartmouth snows were heavier, but without the winds, and I didn't need to drive there). And normally not in December - normally if this kind of storm hits it's in February or March.

Re: Got Snow?

still bad up here. blowing and snowing. heavily. the mister ranked it the second worst he's seen up here.

http://host.madison.com/wsj/news/lo...8-e434-11de-b3fd-001cc4c002e0.html?mode=story

Thousands of students have committed to attend a campus-wide snowball fight on Bascom Hill at 2 p.m. Wednesday. A Facebook event was set up to promote the snowball fight, and as of 11 p.m. Tuesday, more than 4,500 people were listed as attending. Nearly 20,000 Facebook users have been invited through the social networking site.

An attempt to break the world record for the largest snowball fight last year on the UW-Madison campus failed due to chilly conditions.

Why? Why does this happen when I'm no longer a student? Is there such thing as a good excuse to ditch work for this?

The comments are pretty good too.

There was a comment that read:

Before you know it Madison will take control of this and then start charging people to enter the snowball fight, hiring more cops, roping off a certain area, selling tickets to it and once again ruining something fun and taking away the prestigous best party school award. Jerks!

But it has since been deleted. Which is a shame because it is absolutely true. Something tells me it wasn't the original poster of the comment that did the deleting...
