Got Snow?

Re: Got Snow?

I mentioned to one of my brothers yesterday about deciding to buy a snow blower after the last couple days out here. His father-in-law overheard me, and offered to me his old machine for free. It's a '69 Montgomery Wards machine, manufactured by Gillespie with a Briggs & Stratton 5hp engine. I don't know anything about Gillespie, but the thing sounds like a beast at just over 200lbs. The only hitch is that I have to replace the carburetor.

You might have problems finding exactly the right carburetor (or other spare parts), but otherwise it sounds like a nice deal.

Re: Got Snow?

I don't think I've posted in here yet, but YES WE HAVE SNOW :D

My brother does snow removal in the winter when he's home over break, so him and his friends and some neighborhood dads go out and do what needs to be done when needed. They've been out since midnight. His job last night, quoted by him was "I get the shovel" haha bummer

Get the model number, try Sears parts. Not sure if it'll work online.

Or go directly to Briggs...A lot of snow throwers are assembled by the same people but with different labels.

You'll probably be ok actually.

I still shovel, I figure if my 59 year old father still does, so can I...

I was thinking along the same lines, but going directly to Briggs for the part. I never thought about Sears.

Re: Got Snow?

I arrived at the family home in NW Lower MI Wednesday, and everything was perfect and primed for Christmas Eve sledding. Then, about 4pm on Christmas Eve, the rain/sleet started. Now we can see dirt on the driveway and our yard is mostly grass. Thankfully, there's snow coming, so New Years Eve sledding is still looking like a go.

Briggs and Stratton is a common enough engine that parts shouldn't be an issue, even for something that old. And if they are, well jeez, you have to get rid of a free snowblower :D

Re: Got Snow?

The only mechanics class I ever took was a small gas engines course in high school. We had to provide our own engine, and were told to not spend a lot of money. No more that 20-30 bucks. 80% of the class came in with a Briggs & Stratton, the rest of us came in with a Tecumseh.

I was the only one to pass without getting my engine to work. The teacher said that my engine was pretty much toast, and it was going to take way too much time and money to get it running.

Re: Got Snow?

I'd like to thank the plow that snowed in my driveway after I left for work, ensuring I'd have about 9 inches of ice covering the end...which is going to be a huge pain, if I can even do it with this flimsy shovel. Wheeeee

Re: Got Snow?

Snowing again. Really light, though. Made a gas station run earlier today, and everything was ice. Tire ruts, roads, parking lot, everything.

Somewhere on the engine there are a series of numbers, usually 3 separate lines of numbers, should be on a sheet metal plate that wraps around the cylinder. You need these, they tell you everything about the motor, including what carb is on it. Lots of places on line that sell parts, you can input the numbers and find what you need IF its still available

Our place is at the end of the county road we live on. The only place to turn around is in our driveway/parking area, so the county plows us clean :D

I'll get my car into the driveway one way or another....but more importantly...how is the ice? If I can't skate Monday I'm not going to be happy.

Re: Got Snow?

No snow...lots of rain. By the time this is done, the snow on the ground will be long gone and we'll have lots of brown. :(

Got some ice overnight here in interior Maine. By the time I woke up, it had warmed to 33 so it was just plain old rain. Still slippery though.

Its 40 now with Light rain.

Re: Got Snow?

Looks like a classic nor'easter coming for the New Year. The wind chill is about -25 right now and by Thursday night the snow will start and not stop until sometime Saturday or Sunday. The best part is that as it winds down the snow will turn to freezing rain.

Re: Got Snow?

I don't believe this but a salesperson in Charleston told us they were going to get 8 inches of snow New Years Eve. when pigs fly.
